Specific schemes aside, as a general matter, this team, for the past several seasons, seems too timid and passive coming into big games. When they encounter well-coached teams with a chip on their shoulder (like JAX) they seem to mentally and psychologically crumble a bit. This is reflected in their play-calling and demeanor. When they do mentally 'check in' it's often too late.

They need to do a better job of getting mentally and psychologically prepared for the challenge, matching their opponents intensity and setting a strong tone from the outset. Too often they take the first punch and play on their back foot for the better part of the game, which has a trickle down effect for the remainder of the game.

On to specifics...

Whatever message these defensive players are getting from the coaches is clearly problematic. They don't seem cohesive or in sync. They seem passive and regularly on their heels. I think Belichick needs to churn his defensive coaching staff. The pass rush and LBs appear indecisive and ineffective.

And perhaps reflective of this issue is the apparent inability to effectively play zone coverage. Anytime they play zone, there appears to be a lack of communication and cohesiveness amongst those in coverage.

As great as Belichick is some of his philosophies and principles defensively may be antiquated. I think he could benefit from some new voices around him.

Outside of that, an improvement at LB and S would be nice although I'm not sure if that's easily achieved at this point. Would take a helluva trade.

McD's play calling and situational awareness was really bad today. He often has duds like this throughout a given season, where he seems to out think himself. He'd seemingly get comfortable and too 'cute' with his play calling, for lack of a better term.

When we look back at what lost this game we'll point towards leaving points on the field in the red zone as a result of poor play calling, combined with the decision (or lack thereof) to go for it on 4th down midway through the 4th quarter.

With all that said, I'm willing to give them a pass because it's early in the season, but more so because of the heat. It sounds like it was truly miserable and coming from an area of he country that doesn't often get that kind of heat and humidity, I'm willing to chalk up a lot of their mental and physical issues to the weather.

A few other observations ...

D. McCourty, Chung and Hightower are shells of themselves. Would've preferred to see younger, more athletic players in these roles.

J. Jones need to see the field more. He's darn good.

Flowers is extremely important to this defense.

Gilmore is damn good. Great signing.

James White should not carry the ball often. His only utility is as a pass-catcher and pass-blockers. He goes down in a stiff wind running the ball.

I'd like to see Karrass get a look over Andrews. He has looked good in his limited time and is bigger and stronger than Andrews, who routinely gets overpowered.

They won't move away from Andrews, his line calls and trust of Brady make him too important even though he's pretty mediocre and flawed. Thuney is the guy they should try to replace, he's been pretty bad since his rookie year.

As great as Belichick is, he (like all GM) has bad offseasons from time to time. This past offseason was a spectacular failure for Bill the GM. I think they need to do some serious retooling on D and at WR but that could take more years than Brady has left. Absent a fluky level of draft success next year, there is no quick fix to rebuild the D. Paying Flowers is critical, he should have been paid over Mason. Finding 2 new LB, at least one starting DB and 2 good new DT (doubt either Brown or Shelton is re-signed) isn't going to happen in one year.

I'd like to know what people would like McDaniels to have done differently in that game given the handicap the team has at the WR position coupled with the fact that they were playing the best defense in football on the road. Can we get specifics?

People were on McDaniels for getting shutout against the Bills, when we were starting Jacoby Brisset playing essentially with half a hand, so this doesn't surprise me.

Team stunk in all areas last night and it snowballed. Defense couldn't make a stop, which gave the Jags D an edge (mental and strategically) and put extra pressure on an offense that is playing handicapped for the first four weeks. Conversely, offense couldn't move the ball consistently, meaning the defense (which needed every bit of help it could get), had to play too much in the heat. Complimentary (or lack thereof) football.

Patriots offensive play calling was fine, execution was the problem. The defense looked slow and nonathletic. They were getting beat by a bunch of JAGs on offense. It wasn't like they were facing top tier talent, they were facing guys who are lucky to be in the league. That is really the most disappointing aspect of the loss. This defense should have come out and had a good game.

I said it would be a problem and nobody believed it. If you can play good man coverage you can disrupt this offense. They will get edelman back and that will help but idk how much you can depend on a guy coming back from ACL.

They will face better wr corps than the ones they faced yesterday.

I don’t think it’s reasonable to say over the last few years their approach to big games mentally is bad when they are 9-2 in the playoffs the last 4 years.

Not call 3 running plays in a row and being forced to punt?

The passing attack was not getting any separation and Gronk was being bottled up. If there’s anywhere where Jags are susceptible on defense, it’s against the run.

Jax gave up very little against the run last week against the Giants, outside one Barkely 68 yard run. And in the AFCCG last year we averaged 2.4 YPC. Mcdaniels needs to get his head checked if he thought running the ball on 3 straight plays was going to fool Jax.

When did he run the ball on 3 straight plays?

5 of those attempts were Tom's for zero yards.

Those guys just got into the league and are tearing a hole through this defense. They will face experienced wrs. Must be nice to draft wrs that make an impact on the team.

Any chance you can point out any of those plays in particular ? We have a whole rewatch thread to dissect stuff like that. It is somewhat accepted to call a lot of his playcalls cute but I would love to see and discuss some of those things you consider situationally bad or too cute.

It's only Week 2. Relax. This team doesn't have any tendencies yet. They lost to a tough defense on the road in sweltering heat conditions mostly without two of their best defenders. It's not emblematic of their season or their team as a whole.

When did he run the ball on 3 straight plays?

I don't think we did, people seem to confuse Michel getting the ball three times in a row with him running it three times in a row.

82 yards vs Jax

3 - 10 + run plays by Burkhead, Brady and Sony comprise of nearly 50% of the days work.
