Punt returner options

Now the Pats can re-sign Cyrus Jones so he can take over the kick return/punt return duties. I didn't understand his release to begin with. He'd been making real improvement since his rookie year, and looked good in pre-season.

He’s on the Ravens practice squad

Cyrus Jones is on the Ravens PS. The Patriots are already carrying 5 CBs not including JMAC. Do you really think he wants to come back here and be stuck in that log jam?
Yes, I think that Jones would like to be on the active patriots roster as a punt returner and special teamer.

If that's not good enough for him, then that's his decision to make.

There are lots of players that earned their pensions on special teams.

This reminds me of another player who tried to make the team as punt returner...

"The shifty special teamer didn’t even make the New England roster on his first try. He’d be a victim of final cuts in the preseason of his rookie year before rejoining the team to spell Ronnie Harris as a punt returner in 1993. When the 1994 season rolled around, Brown was again shown the door, only for Parcells to bring him back once more. In his first two seasons, he’d return 49 punts but make just two receptions". Troy Brown

Troy Brown is the ‘TB’ who made me fall in love with the Patriots
Great story...but what does it have to do with the mess in which we have found ourselves at Punt Returner (and now with WR depth...and at Power Back)?

Neither Coleman nor Fowler have fielded punts much at all, in college or pros. Do you throw them out there in practice and see how they handle it, anyway?

They might try Fowler at it

Fowler didn't do any punt returning in College. The TD he got was on a blocked punt which he recovered in the endzone.

He had 1 punt return with Denver for 6 yards.

I know he doesn't have much experience. They might try him at it.

I think that Fowler was signed almost exclusively for his ST experience, especially on kick and punt coverage units. Those units have looked like they could use some help since the beginning of Camp and that's why Folwer seems likely to me to stick for the season. I don't think it matters a bit whether he can return punts or not.

If he can block well as a WR and catch 6-12 passes over the course of the season, that's a bonus.

That's where Boldens loss may look large

As you know well (as an AL fan), C. Jones was a fine college punt returner at Alabama and a very good DB also, absolutely fearless (that is why it was so surprising to me that he got such a bad case of the yips his first year in NE). He looked promising in his second year before the injury.

After his bad rookie experience with the Pats, and now being cut by them, I wonder if he really has much love for walking into the Patriots building, it may be like revisiting a house where you had a nightmarish marriage or other terrible experience. I don't really see a return by him to the Pats in the cards.

However, not only would I not be surprised to see him playing meaningful snaps for some team in a few years, I fully expect it.

I feel you nailed it man

It's just a reminder to me that when given a 2nd chance..even the discarded can end up in the Patriots Hall of Fame.

Does he wanted a vested year towards his pension?

Fortunately, the Patriots did not sign the horrible player that is Cyrus Jones.

Excellent choice. Intriguing guy who should fit in around here.

The Pats have seen him on the opposite sideline a couple times, including in the last SB (3 KR for 73 yds).

That is true...just not in this case.

Barner doesn't suck, so I don't hate this move I suppose, as long as he was signed to be our Punt Returner, because he offers nothing from the offensive backfield that isn't provided by Burkhead & White...and perhaps by the other one some day.
