It is normal really. Defenses are usually ahead of the offenses early in the season. Especially if you are so big into attacking opponents weaknesses as McDaniels. It will get better with time and tape. Right now you are essentially guessing and attacking LBs in space (what we are doing for the most part) is the highest probability guess you can have in the first game.
