The punt returner thing isn't a big deal. Burkhead was working there this offseason, Chung's done it plenty before, and Patterson can probably do it in a pinch.

new T on board . (seems no Langi at the moment)

Miami Dolphins high on rookie OT Eric Smith, who could debut Sunday | The Daily Dolphin

PFF scouting report: Eric Smith, T, Virginia | NFL Draft news and analysis | Pro Football Focus

The good that jumps out are his light feet and powerful punch he can exhibit in pass protection that complement his good size and frame. When you couple that with Smith’s solid movement in space you /can/ make a case for Smith to be one of the intriguing tackle prospects in the 2017 draft class.

Eric feckin Smith? Wow...just...who the FECK...unbelievable, yet so very, very believable.

Eric Smith. Undrafted tackle/guard. 6-4. On PUP last season and then IR.

Edelman and Amendola had never returned punts before getting to the NFL.. Just food for thought.

What? Amendola returned 116 punts in college

why is an 8th OL a priority for this week's game?

I don't know whether it is or isn't a priority for this week's game. However, the Pats currently have only three viable OTs on the active roster (IMHO). Even if they're all 100% (and there seems to have been some question about that), they're going up against one of the best pass-rushing DLs they'll see this season.

It just seems a bit risky to me, but it is what it is.

Anyway, I was simply projecting that one of Hansen/Darboh may not be on the roster for the Texans game (having failed their "tryout"), and that another OT would be a priority over Bolden's return - assuming that the Pats have another OT to take that spot (which they may not, unless they plan to promote Croston).

As usual practice squad and roster spots will be used as tryouts early in the season.

Roster composition means less because it is week one.

No, I've been indignant about other PS players before too.
What current free agent practice-squad eligible backup OT would you prefer to sign?

Hopefully, the Patriots will continue to tweak the practice squad as better
players become available.

Off the top of my head, and if they still have PS eligibility:
Adam Bisnowaty
David Quessenberry
Spencer Drango
Rees Odhiambo
I'd even give Boney Tony Garcia's agent a call to see if he's still willing and able.

"Willing". That's the key word.
