2019 Draft Prospect Thread

Everyone having a good, healthy season might declare if the rule to allow undrafted to return goes through..

btw - our guys always there.. big draft ahead..

Does Belichick really need to send a scout there? :)

You wouldn’t want to be a QB up against Ohio State this year. Who’s the other pass rusher to Bosa? Looks pretty good too.

I'm going to be banging the drum for QB Brian Lewerke this year.

Not saying he's a future 20 sack in a year guy, but Zach Allen of BC reminds me of JJ Watt.

Chase Winovich looks solid at DE/OLB. Not great but solid.

I think this edge rusher class is pretty overrated thus far. I don't care if you're 6'6". I care if you can play. I wonder if the passing explosion in the NFL is partially due to the recent popularity of drafting tall, slow edge rushers and playing conservative with 4-man rushes like you have effin' Julius Peppers or Michael Strahan on your team.

One exception: Nick Bosa looked amazing vs Oregon State. Top 5 pick for sure.

Andrew Wingard looks fun at S. I think the team could use an infusion of a real safety like that, not a corner-turned-safety that only plays deep thirds or a LB/safety hybrid that couldn't cover a snail.

Taylor Rapp for Washington looks pretty solid. Dude has great instincts.

Noah Fant at TE looks good as a receiver. Sort of a Zach Ertz type, perhaps? I haven't seen him block yet.

Albert Okwuegbunam is a total beast as a blocker but not very explosive as a receiver.

edit: On second thought, I'm giving Fant a first round grade. He's running away from safeties, and he's a big time jump ball threat. He's lean, but these types of guys don't grow on trees. You just have to decide if that's the tradeoff you'll make for you offense. Now, if he can block too, then he's a lock for the 1st.

Bryce Love, Damien Harris, and LJ Scott should certainly be on anyone's board. Travis Homer is my top sleeper at HB though. He could be my #1 RB actually.

Going back to defense... found another edge guy that I like Anfernee Jennings from 'Bama. Might be my #2, unless I find someone else. Better than Ferrell and Bryant for sure.

On the inside, I love Devin Bush. A future star in the NFL. Cameron Smith and Mack Wilson are good too though.

What do you like / dislike about Jennings / Ferrell?

Curious how you're evaluating.

I don't like how clumsy and weak Ferrell is. I don't see anything special in terms of burst either. I'm here to tell you... Length isn't everything. Turning the corner with length requires the bodily strength to get low and rotate your core in the right direction to run around the OT. Length just gives you a larger radius you can do this effectively at. Ferrell isn't super active with his hands and demonstrating he can be a force without coming off the edge either.

Jennings is very, very aggressive. This is something I prize anywhere on defense but especially in the front seven. There's stupid aggressiveness, but then there's consistent, smart aggressiveness like Jennings seems to display, and that tells me he's going to have a long career. He's also strong as an ox (not in the way Vernon Gholston had huge guns, but in the way that a heavyweight wrestler is hard to take down and never loses his balance. He's going to have a wicked bull rush once he bothers to try it. At the moment, he's fast enough to just run around the outside edge or give a quick rip/swim move to the inside. You could play him as a stand up OLB or a DE. I'm partial to 3-4 bases, but either way.

Bosa also has very good balance, and he has additional speed and flexibility that Jennings doesn't have. On the other hand, he's not as strong. He has tons of moves though, and he's great with his hands.

Pass rushing is basically a martial art of sorts, and I've been doing martial arts since I was in middle school (mostly wrestling but some BJJ more recently). That being said, there are a number of ways you can win, but if you don't even see that this is the type of game they're playing, you'll be clueless as to why certain players succeed/fail. Tons of 'elite' athletes washout in the UFC too because they aren't fighters, they don't know how to coordinate their body, how to react to an opponent, how to plan their moves, etc. It's rather complex when you start analyzing all of it.

Just found my first 1st round graded safety. JR Reed for Georgia is an animal.

Safety is both very hard to scout (with normal TV footage) and very hard to play. A truly great safety is a massive asset to a defense, but most teams don't have one. I've seen recently that safeties haven't gotten paid much in free agency. It's not because teams are devaluing safety (I think), it's because those 'big names' just weren't that good to begin with.

Just as a for instance, fans love the big hit that comes on a tight play that that safety gets over to. They can be nice in the right moment, but in many situations, it actually means the safety was late to the play. He should be playing the ball, not the receiver.

I just rounded up the positions I hadn't looked at yet. Now I've at least touched everything.

OT
Kaleb Prince
AT Hall
Yodny Cajuste

OG
Garrett Brumfield
Brandon Fanaika
Damian Prince

OC
Elgton Jenkins
Jesse Burkett

DT/DE
Zach Allen
Demarcus Christmas
Kingsley Keke

NG
Christian Wilkins
Greg Gaines
Darrion Daniels

Bold is a first round grade.

Prince is a damn beast at OT. He's one of those long guys that no one will ever get the edge on. He's nasty and athletic too.

Brumfield is a dancing bear. I would like to see a tiny bit more effort, but his ability was in stark contrast to most other guards I watched.

AT Hall needs some technique and stuff cleaned up, but I like what I see. Good pass set and nasty run blocker. Plays hard.

Cajuste is a pretty solid looking pass blocker, but he plays in that shotgun offense, so you have no idea how he'd be in an under center offense.

Fanaika is a power guard and pretty solid at it. Damian Prince has a great build, great strength. He has everything you could want at guard.

Elgton Jenkins has rare ability at C, but I didn't see him play too hard. One to watch, but I'm on the fence. Burkett is stout but still athletic enough to do a few things. I think I'd like to see him lose a few pounds, but I like what I see.

Wilkins is hardcore. Everyone probably knows about him.

Christmas is quick and has some moves, but he's not always disruptive. Doesn't have many second chance efforts.

Kingsley Keke, aside from the amazing name, has some stuff going for him. He's versatile, but I'm not sure where his best position is. The important thing is that he plays hard and has athleticism.

Gaines is a big mountain man in the middle who continued to make plays, albeit small ones since he's two gapping and not shooting gaps. Daniels was fairly disruptive. I'm running out of verbiage.

I didn't like a lot of the big name OTs and OGs.

Many of the top 10 DTs had bad technique, effort, and/or bodies for playing DT.

Don't agree w everything you said @miloofcroton but it's nice to see someone else go hard in the draft forum. I joined this mb for this forum & it's been so empty so I appreciate the effort.
Hopefully it continues & we get some grades/tiers from you come draft time.

I've been on the Allen, AJ, Rapp, Wingard & a few other bandwagons as all.
