Could the Patriots trade Malcom Brown to Lions?

A WR from the Lions makes sense given Kenny Golladay emerging. Maybe Jones Jr? Would have to give up a good amount though.

Man, trading for a WR this late in camp is a gamble. No guarantee a guy is going to fit in, and no guarantee he has enough time to catch up. WR is one of those things that, if we're going to trade for it now, should be a late round pick flyer. We shouldn't weaken any other area of the team for that kind of chance.

Why would we trade our best DT?

Part of Bedard's spec is they have Shelton and others to take Brown's place. Plus they are unlikely to pay Brown a ton when his deal is up.

He also wrote Detroit wouldn't likely have someone available they could agree on.

But we have 2 DTs.
In base one typically plays over the C. That is Sheltons job.
The other plays in the G area. If you trade brown who plays there?
We have no one close to brown for that role.

There are certain wrs that have the talent enough to come in and excel.

I have no doubt that there are. I just have doubts that who those WR's are is easy enough to predict that we should lose a key piece on the DL.

We'll be pretty thin at DT if we trade him, but if it was for a pick or a player who's under a solid contract for a couple years, I'm in. Brown hasn't earned himself a major extension his play so far, but he is a solid player who will be useful this season and who I suspect a team with a lot of cap space might throw too much money at this offseason.

Eh Brown isn’t exactly all-world, but it could be tough sledding without him. Butler is a situational passing down DT who still isn’t a proven commodity, Shelton doesn’t play the same role and no guarantees there either, Valentine is a question mark returning from injury who hasn’t played since the Falcons SB. If one of the above or Guy goes down, then what?

Having Brown around paired with Shelton could allow for some of the things they did well when it was Brown and Branch paired together prior to last year’s version of Branch.

IDK that the Lions would be willing to give up Tate or M.Jones. They let their 3rd-most-targeted pass-catcher, Ebron, walk, so Golladay maybe moves into that spot, with TJ Jones behind him. They have a good Camp competition going among TEs who can block and catch a bit. They kept Riddick as a receiving back and added Kerryon Johnson, who can also catch well.

While they do seem to be relatively weak at DT, I'm not sure I'd weaken the pass-catching corps to strengthen DT, if I were Quinn/Patricia.

IMO if the Pats trade players most likely it's for draft picks. I agree with others above on Brown. Even if they keep and he walks they still get a comp pick.

I've never been a fan of trading players in their contract year. They play harder in their contract year. Often, that one year of excellent play is worth more than whatever draft pick you get in return.

Maybe there is hope for the run defense after all.

Brown is a bust. I told you that long ago.

The Pats declined to pick up Browns option because they have seen what he can do.

The Malco(l)m depth chart looking thin
