As usual the Pats will be open for business after the start of roster cuts and will do a move or 2 in the last Friday and Saturday before closing the book on the 53.

There might be a trade as well depending on the development on the WR position, I believe this trade if it happens won't involve 6th or 7th round picks. Not a bigger trade at this point but maybe a little bit of an investment/gamble in a proven player. Decker and Britt have been disappointments so far.

The position I'm really worried and curious is backup QB. It seems that Hoyer is hot garbage right now and it would be a huge risk going into the season with him as the backup QB. I don't think he is that average backup QB with some experience that can hold the fort for 2-4 games anymore. I think he stays until the last day because there is a training camp going on and the receivers need an arm to throw them the ball, someone who knows the plays. Brady is having a very light camp in terms of workload.

On the defensive side I don't see big changes unless some player released by other team gets BB attention, like Iloka or some player that was on the Pats board at the time of his draft.

Idk if they would trade for a wr. Maybe they would wait for the cutdowns. They have had no interest in brandon LaFell.

i dont think there is a single decent backup qb that's going to be available.

And before someone says it.

Kaepernick isn't a backup. he's not going to come in to hold a clipboard for 2 mil a year.

In order of importance:

OT
Backup QB
#3 WR unless Decker steps forward and clicks with Brady

I expect Decker to get 9 or 10 targets from Brady in Friday's game. If he looks okay, he earned himself an $875K roster bonus and a 4-game tryout while Edelman is out of the picture. If not, I expect they'll cut him and direct that money elsewhere.

Kenny Britt is gone unless he gets on the field, I think. He has a little bit of experience with Brady, but not enough to cut somebody else and bet on his hammy. There will be some good receivers on the street on cutdown day.

I think Kaepernick has said he's willing to play for close to the minimum as a backup. Plus, he probably should be a backup. Wasn't that good as a starter but anyone who still tries to argue that he's out of the league due to his play is being disingenuous.

I don't know if his system fit is good but the backup QB situation here is looking pretty dire. Then again, 08 Cassel had a dogshit preseason.

You don't know?

We said the same thing about Cassel ten years ago.

The whole WR situation: we just seen like a man down really hated that they didn't invest more in the position knowing that they were moving on from Amendola and Cooks. Did the Patriots suspect doctors really think that Malcolm Mitchell would be a 100% this season?? There wasn't much diligence given to the position by our brass poor Brady.

Two open spots on the roster at the moment. The Pats don't appear to have had any tryouts since Breeland on the 7th and two WRs on the 3rd.

I don't see backup QB as an issue because, let's face it, do we win a title without Tom?
WR is the biggest issue on opening day because there are not two legitimate starters. And it is the biggest if Cannon is fine.
OT is the biggest issue if Cannon is hurt. Otherwise #4 OT might be a minor issue.
And backup safety might end up being the biggest issue.

I don't think there is a veteran reliable backup QB available as well. Not on the cheap. That would be Hoyer but he is looking bad.

If Etling is not capable of being a QB for this team they may take a chance on a QB some other team will try to put on the PS or outright cut.

Agree about QB being mostly a non-issue. Not that BB will give up if Brady gets hurt, and not that the Pats won't still be competitive for a playoff spot. But still ...

I don't see #4 safety being an issue either. If the run-D has improved as much as many here (including me) think it has, and the LB corps can stay healthy, there may not be any reason for the #4 safety to see the field much at all (in 2016, when the run-D was very good, Richards played only 18 defensive snaps all season). Even the 3-safety nickel might not be used as extensively in the past.

For OT, the Pats have Brown, Waddle, Cannon (inj), Tobin (RT), John (LT) and Croston (who has backed up both Guard and Tackle). It's difficult to say what may happen with this, since we don't know how Scar feels about these guys, nor do we really know who might become available. At this late date, it might be a case of "the devil you know ...".

With Gronk, probably Hollister, plus White, Hill, and probably Burkhead (and Bolden), the Pats can probably get by with Hogan,Patterson and Dorsett, "legit starters" or not, plus whoever else they might keep (and/or acquire as a backup). There may be more than enough there for McD and Brady to work with for four games. We don't really know how they see it.

Braxton Miller is finally looking less useless for the Texans, which could potentially knock Bruce Ellington off the roster. That’s probably about as good as it’s going to get for the Patriots in terms of other teams’ cuts, a Bill O’Brien slot receiver with some punt return experience.

QB
WR
T
S
PR

The above positions should all be closely monitored.
Is Etling in the mix to make the roster?

I dunno Kaep has played vastly different than how our system is run. His 2016 season low key was pretty solid, I thought somebody could have had a bargain last year.
