It's time, ladies and gents. For the biggest sporting event of Earth.

No, not the Super Bowl

It's not the Finals, either

What? World Series? Get out here

WORLD CUP BABY. No matter how delusioned I am with my country, It's impossible not to get excited as a Brazilian. I know there are plenty of other fans around here, even though USA is absent (they lost to Panama. Not gonna mock though. It was to Panama though), let's get this thread startin'.

Also, I invite all my non-americans friends here to use Football when talking about this sport. After all, it is the original football

Who are your favorites? Maybe I'm a bit biased, but I think Brazil is the top team, followed closely by Germany, Spain.

Don’t follow the sport, but dig The Cup and the spectacle of it globally.

What’s with the US though? We couldn’t bump out one of these impoverished third world countries to atleast qualify?

I support you Jay and your team for nothing else than the fact that Brazilian chicks are some absolute SMOKES. Otherwise I’ll stand by ancestry and pull for a repeat by Germany.

Have heard England is a trendy pick, particularly in relation to their betting odds. Is it worth making a modest bet there?

No. England isn't going to win the WC. Midfield not good enough. For me it's between Brazil amd France. Belgium has a lot of talent but it never seems to translate for them.

Germany is my choice to win it.

Mexico my team to cheer for

Portugal my dark horse

Things I like about the sport:

-Different cultures and nations.
-Relegation system (would be great if anyone in US could just start a team in a major sport and have a chance to play at the highest level...also could eliminate teams tanking to avoid demotion).

Things I don’t like about the sport:

-The “two game” cumulative scores are tie broken by away goals...wtf! Why not just add extra time or go to shootout if you are committing 180 minutes to it already? Also, why have two games to decide quarter finals and semi finals and then revert to one game for the championship???
-Flopping and faking injuries at a monstrous level.
-Can you just show a damn running clock at the end of regulation when “extra time” begins? So anti-climactic that you have to wait for the refs to let you know when the game is over.
-Having to actually watch a game prior to the 80th minute.
-Why not just move back the penalty kick ten feet or so to make it more challenging and suspenseful instead of dumb luck for a goalie to make a save?
-Having to listen to the broadcasters rave about amazing and “beautiful” the sport is.
-Cristiano Ronaldo.

Deutschland Deutschland Uber Alles!!!!

I want to root for like the 5th or 6th best team to win. Who is that? Belgium? Argentina?

I like underdogs. I'll go with Iceland.

Sure...good bets at 5th, 6th best teams.

Pulling for England as it’s my ancestry but I know I’ll be disappointed once again!

If they played the World Cup without the United States, did they play the World Cup?

I also think if American football is going to go global, it needs to re-brand and be called something else. What we call soccer is football everywhere else, and quite frankly, it uses a foot on the ball 90% of the time vs. 10% of the time in American football (these stats are made-up).
We just steal names, calling it football is stupid. Not sure what the best option is though. Downball ?

Now, as for Touchdowns. In Rugby when they score a "Try" which is the touchdown equivalent, they need to actually touch the ball down in the "end zone" to score. No crossing the plane. They need to TOUCH the ball DOWN. I wonder where we got that name given that we don't touch anything down

Always root for Portugal, and I’ll think they’ll go far, but I think it’s Brazil or Argentina’s to win.

Germany has looked real good the few times I have seen their second tier squad play. I don’t think it bodes well for the world. France on paper is very talented. Those are my favorites.

Argentina will crap their shorts along with Messi. If Portugal doesn’t get to the round of 16 i will be dissapointed. I am tired of Germany already but they have become bigger than Brazil. Brazil needs to bounce back after that shellacking in 2014.

Argentina had a chance in that final. Messi missed a chance and also Higuaín. You can’t do that against Germany.

They have also stolen the game from the Brazilians. The Brazilians where the super power but they have looked lethargic at times. Curious to see how Neymar will play in this World Cup.

Might be the last time for Messi

If FIFA have their way, Messi and Argentina wins the WC. Trust me

Anyone seeing the US beating France right now?
