A homer is someone who can’t look at their team objectively.
Exactly.
Of course there are mistakes made in building the team and mistakes made in coaching. They're human. It doesn't make me a homer though to acknowledge that no team has done it better for a longer period.
Their success is not "homerish", it's just a fact.
I dont agree or like every move they make but left a lot of super bowls on the table? I can see 1 they may or may not have, how do you come up with many?
Good question. Every draft for any team trickles down into the following year and beyond. I understand you can't hit on every draft pick but the stretch that bothers me the most was from 2005-2007, 2009-10, 2015 (coaching), 2017 (coaching).
Lost Opportunities:
2006 So the Pats lost Givens and Branch was holding out which forced the Pats to draft Chad Jackson in the 2nd round when they still had glaring needs at LB. They drafted Maroney in the 1st round which showed some promise and Jackson was dealing with injuries until his career was K.O.'d in the AFC Title Game. If the Pats just had one decent LB in that game against the Colts, they would've won that game and the Super Bowl.
2007 That draft was flat out pathetic but their trades were an A+. Despite all the talent they had on offense, Maroney was extremely disappointing as a 2nd year player and should've easily had a more productive season which could've helped take the pressure off of Brady during the Super Bowl. It's hard to fault the defense during that game as they held the Giants down as long as they could but they were just out coached as McDaniels admitted during a documentary on ESPN. That Super Bowl loss is tough to let go.
2009-10 This was a big year for the Pats given the fact they had all that draft capital. This was the time they were going to address the defense and get some players to get the Pats back on track. Nope. Their best picks were on offense and Chung became a better player when he returned from his time in Philly. Edelman took years to develop. This bad draft trickled down into the following season as they ended up losing to a very inferior Jest squad at home. That loss was embarrassing.
2015 Did the Pats have a bunch of injuries. Yes. But that's not a good enough excuse. The Pats gave away the last 2 games of the season as the Pats would flat out not throw the damn ball in the first half. All they had to do was win one, one game and they were the #1 seed. They ended up having to go to Denver and that defensive game plan was pathetic allowing Manning to score TD's on the first two drives. Embarrassing.
2017 We don't need to rehash that subject.
Honorable Mentions:
2011 Losing to the Giants again? Their D was pretty weak but that was a winnable game.
2012 Losing to the Ravens at home was brutal. They were an inferior team, especially on D. Their D was had a bunch of slow guys who were terrible in coverage at LB but the Pats couldn't exploit it. However, I think they would've lost to the 9ers in the Super Bowl.
