Is Julian Edelman overrated???

It’s a shame that he had those foot issues at the beginning of the 2016 season, because a full season of elite production would have changed a lot of opinions about him. He led the league in receiving yards in the second half of the season and continued that in the playoffs as well, but nobody really cares because his slow start meant his full season totals were unimpressive.

Julian Edelman is one of the most UNDERRATED receivers of all time. So underrated in fact, he’s overrated.

You got a "funny" rating but what you said is extremely true.

He’s overrated in this sense, he gets compared to Welker a lot and because we won with him, people kind of put him on more of a pedestal. When in most measurable ways Welker was clearly superior.

I don't really follow the packers, but i can't remember a whole lot of people talking about Jordy nelson the same way they talk about Julio, or Antonio, or Calvin, or even scrubs like Dez, and OBJ.

None of those guys have had the clutch superbowl moments that Jules has. the only people that remember that Julio sideline catch are atlanta and some patriots fans. EVERYONE probably remembers the car crash catch edleman made.
Jordy was talked about appropriately.

Brown is quite easily the best receiver in the league and is on pace to touch some big records if he keeps it up. Calvin is an all timer and possibly top 10 ever. OBJ is prob 2nd or 3rd best and he came on the scene pretty hot and Dez was an elite big time flashy guys.

Jordy was considered in that Dez Bryant tier until injuries. Also most of those guys supersede their QB’s.

Don’t see how a 7th round pick and former QB turned WR can be overrated. He’s underrated if anything.
It doesn't matter where a player is drafted, it has to do with how your are perceived by the media. With that being said, I don't ever hear Edelman's name in the same class as the elite WR's. He's just known as a "good" WR.

Haters going to hate:

If such logic was true then let's apply Dwayne Allen to the concept and Ochocinco and well i could go on ... we do have a failed WR list ..............
So true. This argument is so bad. It's like Tom Brady being a "system QB". Oh really, then how come Kevin O'Connell, Ryan Mallett and other QB's drafted by the Pats weren't Pro Bowlers?

Measurable ways? Edelman is a bigger version of Welker with longer arms. As good as Welker was, Edelman is better although it doesn't show up on the stat sheet. Welker was allergic to the clutch gene which Edelman has.

three of those receivers have been at some point considered the best WR in the game. Dez is/was an athletic freak and OBJ is ridiculous sans injury.

I think Primetime called it the best when talking about Jules..

He isn't. I don't think anyone believes he is Julio Jones or anything but he has been boardline top 15 when healthy the last few years.

"Since 2013, Edelman has averaged 89 catches, 957 yards and five touchdowns per year."

Too short. Too slow. Not strong enough. Wouldn't make another team's roster. They can't f*cking stop him.

I think Deion Sanders said it best.

If edleman wasn't white people would be talking about him as if he was one of the best receivers in the league.
Deion Sanders Believes Julian Edelman Is Underrated Because Of ‘Reverse Racism’

Not only that it’s bias against his position. How many slot receivers are perceived to be among the elite in the league? I can’t think of any. People think it’s an easier job because it doesn’t draw coverage by number 1 DBs and most of the catches are across the middle for 5-15 yards.

Edelman is not overrated but I'm surprised no one is predicting a decline, even just a small one, for a guy in his 30s coming off an ACL tear.
I've read some posts on this board doubting he'll ever be the same.

Look at Welkers stats each year and look at Edelman’s.

Welker has 2 First Team All Pros and 2 2nd team All Pros. He’s also led the league in receptions once. Julian has no All Pros and never led the league in a stat.

Stats per game
Welker: 5.6 receptions. 56 yards. 11 average. 0.28TD’s

Edelman: 4.1 receptions. 44 yards. 10.7 average. 0.23 TD’s

Clear advantage Welker.

Welker also holds the record for most 105, 110, and 115 receptions seasons as well as tied with Brown and Carter for 120.

For the Patriots franchise Welker has the record for most receptions (672) most receptions in a single season (123) most yards in a single season (1569) and most receiving yards per game in a single season (98.1)

Welker also wasn’t allergic to the clutch. He dropped one significant pass his whole career and was largely regarded as automatic for most of his time here.

Again Edelman gets higher praise because we won with him and a lot of people resent Welker for the drop in the Super Bowl.

When you said "measurables" I took it as though you were talking about his height, weight, etc. because that's what that term means. Welker's stats are clearly superior to Edelman's, which I acknowledged in my post, but I think Edelman makes the tougher catches as he did in both Super Bowl wins. He took some big hits in the Seahawks game and threw his body out to make that amazing catch against the Falcons. Welker didn't do that.

My point is, I'd rather have Edelman than Welker.

“He is overrated cuz the GOAT is throwing the ball.” So The GOAT is overrated cuz BB is coaching him. BB is overrated cuz he has the GOAT and the GOAT is throwing to that overrated WR. GARBAGE logic.

Sounds like Jesse Reed needs to review a highlight reel of Edelman's head-fake jump cuts. Not receptions, just the cuts - and the instantaneous separation he's gotten from those.

I don't think I've ever seen such consistent, razor sharp execution by another WR. And that has absolutely zero to do with Brady or McD. They're just smart enough to take optimal advantage.

The sad part, of course, is that he tore his ACL making one of those cuts. And the worrisome part is wondering if he'll be as good at them coming back from that injury.

Welkers our of the league because he got so many concussions throwing his body out to make amazing catches. That’s so unfair to say that. It basically comes down to Welker dropped a pass in a Super Bowl and Julian didn’t. You can’t discount everything he did because of a dropped pass.

I don't know about "amazing catches" but I knew Welker taking a bunch hits to the head would come up. Maybe you're right and I'm exaggerating on his drops. However, he also gets criticized for the dropped 3rd down pass against the Ravens which I wrote about on another thread. So that made it two years in a row he came up small in a big game. He took a shot to the head from Pollard which affected him catching that pass which wasn't the greatest throw from Brady after watching again. He had to twist his body to try to catch it. He was also bracing for a hit which made him lose concentration and end up dropping the pass.

The reason why I like Edelman vs Welker is the simple fact of their catch radius. If you've played QB before you'd know it's a pain in the a** to throw to small WR's. Your throw has to be near perfect just for them to have a chance to catch the ball. Welker had an extremely small catch radius due to his arm length.

Just my opinion, but I saw Welker disappear in big games when they needed him most. I actually thought it was a mistake to let Welker go to Denver and have Edelman take over. But Edelman won me over when he had his way with the "Legion of Boom" in the Super Bowl. I just think if it were Welker in that game he would've folded like a lawn chair.
