That defense, that was extremely shaky ALL SEASON due to lack of healthy bodies and inexperience. But it got them to the Superbowl - AGAIN - where they ran into a very, very good offense that was peaking at exactly the right time.

There was not one single goddamn thing that Butler could have done to turn that defensive performance around. Not one.

I genuinely feel sorry for folks like you who refuse to understand or accept this and, instead, are compelled to lash out and blame someone. It is what it is. It's history. Move on, already. We're on to 2018.

That is your opinion. It is not a fact. My opinion Is Butler could have made one stop on third down in the 2nd half when it counted that could have iced the game for us because our offense was on a roll.

Belichick is the greatest coach of all time and he’s had some memorable hall of fame coached games...but in my opinion the eagles game will go down as one of the worst he’s ever coached.

I also don’t like that any year we don’t win the Super Bowl, some people blame injuries as the reason. I don’t like excuses, we are better than this. Every team battles injuries. Some years we just get beat by the better team, or get outcoached that one game

At safety, he's not. Butler wouldn't have done any better with Richards' assignments that game than Richards did. Richards wasn't good at them, but Butler has never played those assignments. It would be similar to asking Burkhead to suddenly step in and play the assignments of an inline TE. Burkhead may be a better player than Jake Hollister, but he wouldn't be any better at TE than Hollister.

True, but admit it, players, coaches, and us fans all get excited when NE is up in the 4th quarter and they pull off an 8 minute, ground-n-pound, clock-killing drive, ending in a kneel-down. It has been awhile since we've been able to do much of that.

Style points. We aren’t blowing leads because we don’t do that.

i always marvel how coach is ahead of the curve. First thing I noticed with Winn was his run blocking. Then he is paired with Andrews who is fellow teammates and they get Michels who averaged an insane yard per carry. Was this all part of a plan. Reminds me of everyone crying about Rutgers picks and then we see some very timely interceptions. We also now see two Mcourtys. Hmmmm is he thinking in parts where everyone else is thinking pieces? I said this last night. These picks were very calculated. Wynn would walk 4+ miles to train & practice after school & Sony is a football head too. Both guys have lived together but literally work together on the field helping each other. Very planned out not that others aren't as well.

Belichick is building an offense that will take the pressure off the QB, so he will have a team that can both extend Brady's career by better protecting him, and perform well when it becomes necessary to replace him, be it sooner or later. Even Hoyer will be able to be competitive playing behind a dominant O line and given the combination of both a killer ground game and a good set of receivers. Like it seems we will have going into next season.

In 2015, in spite of being perhaps the most injury-wracked team in the league, they still made it to the AFCCG. In 2017, in spite of having numerous injuries to key players on both sides of the ball, they still made it to the Superbowl and came within one or two plays of winning it against the hottest team in the NFL.

Let's calm down here. Brady covers a lot of warts especially on defense. Let's not forget how long bill tried getting that cornerback until he brung revis and we won a ring. They had injuries and all that and he sat his second best corner in the biggest game of the year. Will these guys coming back make a difference in the defense? Maybe. Still these LBs can't cover worth a lick. I expect a bend but don't break defense in 2018. They will be outside of the top 10.

Seriously how can you criticize someone with his track record. Why not try and figure out how he’s thinking differently. Defense will be fine. It was injuries that hampered last years defense. They will get healthy and they have the rest of the draft.

You can bet your bottom dollar that Belichick, Brady, and McDaniels would all love to have that option in terms of the running game, and anyone who'd argue otherwise is simply wrong. There's not a team in the league who doesn't want to be able to run the ball at will when they need to. Unfortunately, we haven't had the kind of running game that allows us to do that on a consistent enough basis.

Killing the clock when you have a lead and breaking the other team's spirit by rushing it down their throats is football 101. That doesn't mean that we don't want Brady utilized as the main weapon any longer, just that we need to have more options and start thinking about protecting him a bit more in the next couple of years.

You're certainly right that there have been plenty of misses. Actually, too many to even list. While careful studying and planning go into the process, it's still something of a gamble in terms of some players working out and others not working out.

I like Belichick as much as the next guy, but I'm not sure that I would go as far as the OP has in suggesting his brilliance due to choosing an OL and a RB. We had needs in both of those areas, at least on some level, and most certainly for the future. I love the moves and think they were great, but I don't know that it's the best example of the "Belichick's playing chess while the rest of the league is playing checkers" theory that's often parroted. We lost our franchise LT, have been trying to upgrade in the middle, and have Mason coming up for FA in the spring (and Thuney right behind him). I'm not sure how this proves his brilliance, but I'll happily take it!

Nice narrative if only it was true.

He was on the field for 16 snaps out of 75. You do the math.

Point is the defense was good enough to get us to the SB and saved the offense in the AFCCG. So saying it is a terrible defense is just trolling.

Just because a team that was a particular matchup nightmare for us played almost flawless 60 minutes doesnt make the unit bad and invalidates the previous months of games.
