Patriots trade for 49er's OT Trent Brown

I'm all about improving our roster but how many OT are we going to have on our team? I'm expecting the next two days to be focused on defense, defense and more defense...with the exception of adding a developmental qb.

At this point, building the 90-man "menu" roster, the more OT options they have to choose from, the better their chances of having solid OL roster - starters and backups - for the final 53.

Worth bearing in mind, that there was talk about the Pats having to trade up in the first to get their Solder replacement (Miller, McGlinchey), a move that would have cost at least a 3rd. For less than that price we got Isaiah Wynn and Trent Brown. That strikes me as good business.

Deleted your post for brevity-Hyped

And this apparently means the team is confident in Shelton, Rivers, and Hightower making an impact.

Sometimes it's a simple matter of health and availability.

Can any of these guys rush the passer or cover? Am I gonna see the back of a jersey of a LB chasing down a running back or a tight end?

Would prefer the draft instead of an aging veteran. We went that route last year with meh results. (Harris)

Not all "aging vets" are created equal.

Beat me to it. That's my thinking too. Trade him before he hits his final year, and get a pick(s) in the mid-rounds which is something we don't have at this point.

Or: play the beast till the end, win, let the rookies develop and then pick up a 3/4 comp pick (which is probably around trade value..)

Probably depends on which part of the anatomy is involved.

Both Brown and Mason could net good compensatory picks potentially.

A starting tackle for sort of the value of a fourth or fifth round pick at $1.9mm is a good deal.

Now the Pats enter training camp with as many as five players contending for the starting left tackle spot:
Marcus Cannon, who is much more of a right tackle at 330 to 350 pounds but has subbed in at LT
Trent Brown, who at 6-8.4” has the height the Patriots like and high ratings for pass blocking but has played RT
Tony Garcia, who is an actual left tackle but lost 40 pounds and his entire rookie season to serious illness
Isaiah Wynn, who played both left guard and left tackle at exactly 6-2.6”, lacking the prototypical length of an NFL tackle
LaAdrain Waddle, who has prototypical left tackle size and has spent two years under development with Dante

Looks like the Patriots have done what they could to address the loss of Solder.

Hyperbole aside, but woah

As I said earlier, it might just be that a sudden opportunity to trade for someone with a really high grade presented it and they jumped on it.

Don’t like giving up a 3rd, who needs a 5th back. Or get a 4th back with him. Shoulda just given up a 6 straight up. Not thrilled with this deal. SF gives up on the guy because he can’t keep in shape. So they were gonna dump him anyway.

How long before he actually practices in training camp because he can’t pass the conditioning tests.

That being said, Von Miller seems to think this guy might be the best RT in football. So there’s that.

“He’s the best right tackle in the National Football League,” Miller said Wednesday after the first of two joint practices with the 49ers. “And he may even be a top-five tackle, period, in the National Football League. There’s not another tackle who’s that tall, that big and can move the way he moves.”

Can any of these guys rush the passer or cover? Am I gonna see the back of a jersey of a LB chasing down a running back or a tight end?

Can any of the (unnamed) defenders you would have picked protect Brady's blind side or help make RB screens successful? Am I gonna see Brady carted off the field or every RB consistently stuffed at the LoS?
