Malcolm Butler Mega Thread

Always interesting hearing more info and opinions from those inside the organization on SB Sunday. Less interesting hearing the same rehashed opinions from members here both pro- and anti-BB for the decision. We heard you the first time...or first 50 times for some of you.

Regards,
Chris
I don't get how anyone is anti-BB without buying the ludicrous notion that he did this out if spite or malice.

Whatever his motives they were done with what he thinks is the best interest of the team. He didn't just suddenly before the grandest stage decide revenge was more important than football. zero percent chance of this.

This thread is becoming a repost disaster area.

More details can be found a few pages back but let's just say it's Malcolm's fault.

Benching Malcolm to prove a point doesn't seem to be like what was "best for the team" on that day. Malcolm was not coming back, so I don't see how his being allowed to play would impact the locker room. Losing the game when you believe it was within reach is likely to have a larger impact on the locker room. Amendola's comments make me wonder if it was just about the money when he went to Miami. After all, he took less money in the past.

If this is what I think it's referring to... then no, Belichick is the one who decided to factor in Butler's fairly trivial off the field actions into the Super Bowl.

Heads are so far up Belichick's ass at this point. He can truly do no wrong.

He said he wasn't locked in to play the SB. If that doesn't bother him for the rest of his life then that is concerning.
You're taking two little words from a Butler quote and twisting them into something ridiculous. He was trying to guess the reasoning for the benching and mentioned a variety of things including how he was initially sick at the beginning of the week.

If a player isn't "locked in" enough to take a single defensive snap, then he shouldn't be active. Also, Butler did play 1 special teams snap - an area of the game which Belichick clearly values a lot.

A bunch of people want to move on, but what matters is the team. I think that has yet to happen. I do think Bill will address this with them this spring.

Because BB got where is by letting players do whatever they want with no consequences.

Listen nothing was working and the guy was on the bench suited up. For one bad play he can make another great play. I just feel you go with all your horses and that's it.
Malcolm said he was not locked in.

If your boss wanted you to work on the most important project in the company's history and you told him you were not "locked in", what do you think your boss would do to you?

Statements like this, along with "Belichick does what is best for the team" (which coach doesn't?) are too broad and simplistic. Nothing compares to this Butler situation.

The nearest and most recent example would be Chandler Jones getting benched prior to the playoff game where he was found shirtless (or nude?) at a police station after smoking synthetic weed. ---Wait a second. He never got benched.

Otherwise, little things throughout the last 18 years like x player being late for a week 11 practice, is not comparable to this Super Bowl blunder.

In retrospect, Bill may decide to do things differently. He probably thought that the pats could get away with beating a backup QB without Butler. However, no one knew Foles was going to have the game of his life, including Bill. I know I was expecting something along the lines of the Atlanta game. But once Bill makes a decision (good or bad) he sticks with it.
If Bill thinks he is about to make a bad decision he won't do it. He'll do something different.

I think Bill decided he wanted the players on the field who he felt gave him the best chance to win the game.

In Bill's mind on that day, Malcolm was not one of them.

I think you are not assigning the proper amount of blame to Malcolm for not being 100% ready to play in the Super Bowl.

When things go bad, its common for fans to put more blame on the coach/manager than the player.

There is no question Bill thought what he did was right for the team at the time. In retrospect, he was probably wrong, but at the time he benched butler because he thought he would win.

He likely could have if not benched for the entire game. I haven’t seen any reports nor any evidence nor any quotes from players which supported that brain dead decision and supported sticking with the Big Nickel when you obviously don’t have the personnel to run it successfully against an offense like that. They got exposed in it vs. KC in Week 1 and they were getting tea bagged at halftime and still they decide not to adjust? Amendola deserves to be pissed off as do other players. BB is the GOAT coach, but his decisions here directly lost the team this game. He betrayed himself. He said he makes decisions that are the best for the team to win the game and the ultimate goals are Super Bowl wins. But he cost them this game.

I guarantee you the BB disciples are going to purposefully overlook this post Hmmmm I wonder why??

The BB Idolatry by some of these posters is just unreal. The mans $h!t stink too.

Why couldn't it be something that was done out of stupidity/error/stubbornness? Why can't it be mistake/incompetence instead of purposeful malice?

"Best interests of the team" is a dismissal, not an answer of value.

Danny’s Revenge .... he had to know every sportswriter in New England was going to latch onto this.

I guess I just don't understand how this notion of stupidity/error/stubborness plays out?

I guess Bill just woke up feeling like Simple Jack that day? (stupidity)

Or maybe he said sit Adam Butler and they sat Malcolm Butler? (error)

Or maybe he went up to Butler the morning of the game with a new contract and said sign this or you sit? (Stubborn)

Amendola’s comments are definitely the strongest opinion issued by any player on the subject, and my guess is he’s not the only one that feels that way. What he said reflects the opinions of much of the fan base as well.
