Rob Gronkowski debate wearing thin

That process has resumed, but some are now asking if it’s possible Gronk might be getting a bit too lean for a tight end.

Typically, he plays at 265 pounds. Right now, I’m told he’s 260, but will be back up to his usual weight (if not a few pounds heavier) by the time camp rolls around. Given that scenario, there wouldn’t seem to be an issue.

Except Guerrero and his treatment of Patriots players beyond Brady is a polarizing subject in and around Patriot Place. Everything seems to be up for debate.

Plus, Gronkowski’s quest for pliability may have even stirred up some of the reported friction between Bill Belichick and his star tight end.

At one point early last season, the Hoodie chastised Gronk in front of the players for being a TB12 client, according to a source. So maybe that was Belichick’s not-so-subtle way of trying to keep everyone from jumping ship on the team’s training staff.

Former Ravens head coach Brian Billick certainly understands the dynamic and difficulties of having a star player wanting to use a coach outside of team personnel.

“Everyone wants their personal guy. And that’s probably where Gronk is right now,” said Billick, now an NFL Network analyst. “We took the approach, we let them come to the facility and let them work out with their guy. That way, we could monitor it .?.?. Now, it’s not comfortable. That’s asking a lot of your weight staff. It’s not an easy thing to do, but it’s where we are with today’s athletes.”

Billick, like Belichick, acknowledged that a head coach has to draw a line in the sand at some point, or else lose control of the locker room.

“The problem becomes, do I let everybody in? Now I got 53 different workout guys,” he said, “so there’s a fine line to draw in bringing in outside knowledge into the building. It’s not easy.”

If that’s true it would shed light on why Gronk told Amenola to be free and happy. I think Gronk is only staying because of Tom and once TOm retires he’s gone too.

That seems to be what Guregian is strongly implying in the article.

Given reports about what was going on in the locker room and how badly the defense played in the game, it's an achievement that this team got to the Super Bowl let alone being within a strip sack of actually winning it.

Belichick has a long history of being tolerant of alternative treatment methods going back to Testaverde in Cleveland. Can't help but wonder if Guerrero and the medical/training staff disagreeing over routines or courses of treatment for players not named Brady & Gronkowski may have become too disruptive/distracting for Belichick to tolerate. BB subscribes to the Parcells method of banging on stars rather than JAGs (ie Johnny Foxboro comments to Brady) so it wouldn't be surprising if that's the reason he singled out Gronk for TB12 comments. If so it certainly seems to have backfired.

Patriots should just hire him already before some team throws stupid money at him then we really have a issue.
I doubt he would do anything that kept him away from Brady. He may be a charlatan, but he probably knows which side his bread is buttered on.

I’ve been neutral on this forum to the whole Brady/Guerrero/Gronk v. BB. Hoping eventually story would just go away & football would be talked about more around here (Kudos to Mgteich for sparking football discussion).

Now I’m getting annoyed.

Brady may have had the best age-adjusted season in sports history. Gronk played the whole season and his circus ground catch vs. Pitt does not happen without Guerrero’s methods. Now Alex is attempting to save Malcolm Mitchell’s career.

Maybe just cool it Bill for a minute & let the trainer who’s assisting in us having the two best players on the best offense on the field playing at their best do his work with the offensive skill guys? Worry about the defense.

Maybe he’s re-evaluated his position since the season ended. Gronk didn’t seem worse in the power department when analyzing his blocking.

Agree 100%. That defense was terrible. It looked better in the middle of the year but honestly, it was not that good. I just rewatched the Houston game and the Carolina game and it looked just like the superbowl.

Poor Gwonky got his feewing hurt by mean old BB.

What a bunch of crap. Is this a sewing bee or a football team.
Curran responds to this take...

I don’t understand why Bill just lets the players train with whomever they want. If their performance on the field suffers, then you can ban them from guerrero.

Well, it hasn't. Brady just played at an MVP level at age 40 and Gronk finished the season (aside from the Church hit). It's too bad Edelman tore his ACL, because we could also judge his work as well. Next year, we'll get to watch Edelman and Mitchell in their respective comebacks.

So 53 different trainers all doing different things all in the facility? All getting in each others business. Yes, brilliant idea.
