Patriots sign WR Jordan Matthews to a 1 Year Deal

Some Jordan Matthews 101, if I may so presume, gents, as I've noticed that a lot of folks have an extremely inaccurate idea of what he brings to the table:

01 ~ His skill set is very different than that of Edelman or Amendola. There are some similarities, and all of our wideouts play multiple roles, but as skill sets go: very different.

02 ~ Those guys are SlotBacks. That's an ancient FootBall term that I don't see in use much outside of my Site, but it's the only correct term to describe the Wesley Welkers, Julian Edelmans, and Danny Amendolas of the world, who're not fast, like a Flanker, and not tall, like a Split End or a Slot End, but are quick and slippery. They tend to line up off the line, technically in the BackField, and catch a ton of short, high percentage passes.

03 ~ Jordan Matthews is a Split End. Split Ends optimally line up outside, on the line, as opposed to Flankers, who optimally line up outside, off the line. Split Ends are most noteworthy for their size and target area. And because they're on the large size, they're usually not anywhere near as quick or explosive as SlotBacks.

04 ~ "Slot End" is a term that I've invented to describe WideOuts who line up in the Slot but on the line. I've even dabbled with defining it as a definitive skill set, but generally these guys are just Split Ends who've played primarily in the Slot just to get'm some Snaps, because they're on a team that already has a starting Split End, or for other tactical reasons.

05 ~ Matthews isn't especially quick, but he's fast enough, and he's remarkably slippery for a Split End, hence his success in Philly in the Slot. But he's huge and pretty slippery, whereas Edelman is small and extremely slippery. Different skill sets. Different roles.

06 ~ His skill set is very different from Edelman's, and that's awesome news because that means that they compliment each other: He can be lined up at Slot End with Edelman at SlotBack to enormous tactical advantage, and he can be split out wide, and be effective in either role. He's got Gronkowski's "build up speed" which'll enable'm to be extremely dangerous down the seam, yet he's an outstanding, cerebral Route Runner who I expect to master this Offense quickly, enabling our man Brady to put'm to work quickly...And he's a big target ~ with good hands!!! ~ who should become an excellent weapon both in Moving The Chains and in closing Drives in the End Zone where they belong.

When Welker arrived on the scene he had some good seasons behind him, but then he turned into a really great receiver for the Pats. When Amendola arrived he has a similar trajectory, while he never had great consistent seasons for the Pats he was money in the playoffs..

So guys like Edwards who did well in Philly and not so well in Buffalo and Patterson who did well in Minnesota and not so well in Oakland, might have a similar trajectory as did Welker and Amendola.. I know they all play different positions, but the point is that there is an effort by BB and the front office to find players who might fit the mold.. sooner or later they will find that player who will make an impact on the O...

I am hard pressed to consider any reason why I would not like this signing, low risk and possible reward...

When was the last time the Pats signed a receiver and we didn't hear that "he drops a lot of balls?"

Another low-risk, high-reward signing.

Mr Chad my binkie Jackson dominated the wide receiver rookie skills competition catching everything and winning flat screen TVs in the process.
When we traded up for my favorite player in tbe draft I celebrated like when we beat the Rams in our first Superbowl victory.
I called all my friends and gloated then bought every Chad Jackson autographed card and helmet bought his jersey made him a 99 in Madden.
Needless to say I was very wrong about the guy.

Hopefully under whatever dollar amount will not mess with ANY of the compensatory picks that are owed us next year, which better include:
#97 for Solder;
4th-rounder for Butler;
5th-rounder for Dion Lewis;
and a 6th-rounder for Amendola.

So if that means that Matthews had to accept a one-year deal for under $3M, then so be it.

Compensatory Draft Picks Cancellation Chart | Over the Cap

You might bother to consult the comp thread or the comp site before making silly comments. Compensation for Solder and Butler are both 3rds. Lewis is a 6th and Amendola is a 7th. And yes, the last two could get bumped. Personally I don't care about comp picks at the end of the 6th round and 7th round. Belichick does at least as well with UDFA's.

As an aside, Niklas is not likely to ount, but Matthews will. So, the 6th is likely knocked out. I would happily give a pick between the 6th and 7th rounds in order to sign Matthews.

THAT BEING SAID
Belichick must and will be careful with regard to the comp 3rds.

This is the Patriots. Almost nobody is "safe".
Mitchell would need to forget how hands work to be cut. For him it's either the 53 or PUP/IR. I have high hopes for this year by all reports he is ready to go for OTAs so I'm trying not to hold his lost year against him.

Mitchell has had one season's experience in the NFL, the second half of which was very good. He's had chronic knee issues since before he was drafted. He hasn't played in a contact game since August, and hasn't played in a game that counts in well over a year.

He will need to compete for a roster spot. It's not a given.

Bret Bielema's presence with Patriots adds SEC perspective for draft

“4. In the end, it was relayed to me by someone close to wide receiver Jordan Matthews that Matthews’ decision to sign a one-year deal with the Patriots came down to this: He wanted to play with Brady. Matthews, who also took free-agent visits to Arizona, Green Bay and Tennessee, had other offers to consider in addition to New England’s.”

Take that Rodgers!

Perhaps they need a good talking to, if you don’t mind my saying so, sir. Perhaps a bit more?

Best scene in any movie...ever.

The extremely close "2nd" ~ and I wouldn't challenge anyone describing'm as "tied" comes of course immediately to mind...and the parallels, you know, abound:

And I would be shamefully remiss in failing to post the 2nd Act:

Blech. It's awful quality, but the only one that I could find that captures the moment.

I like how Grady begins to totally dominate the conversation seemingly out of nowhere. Excellent direction by Kubrick.

Oh, yeah. That was rare footage of two great Actors, a great Director, and a splendid Crew, being smart enough to get out'f the way and let Greatness happen.

Here's two:

1) How badly damaged are his legs, and when - if ever - will he be as healthy as he was before he started to break down in Philly?

2) How much will he be paid, how much is the dead cap hit if he is released before week 10, and how does this effect our (should be) 4 compensatory picks in 2019?
