Both 2014 2nd round draft picks that haven't lived up to expectations.
Doesn't hurt to take a look though.
I’m not sure that I’d put Matthews in the same category, myself.

In 4 yrs, he’s caught 250 balls for 3,000 yards and 20 TDs, and this is all with his fourth year (2017) being completely written off to injury where he played sparingly for ten games and only caught 25 passes.

Even if you include that shortened ****show of a season in BUF last year, that makes his yearly average out to be 63 grabs for 750 yards and 5 touchdowns a year.

I don't see any objection to bringing in competition, especially at TE. However, I see both as comp fodder.

You see a guy who was a former 2nd round pick, who went into last season (with Tyrod Taylor—in an injury shortened year) averaging like 75 catches, 900 yards a season, and 6+ touchdowns a year as “camp fodder?” Prior to last season, his targets were 103, 126, and 117. The last two were more than Cooks got here, last season.

You must be super high on Britt, Dorsett, Patterson, and Mitchell to not see a player like that worthy of a shot at making the roster. I remember years where he’d have been our WR2, and that wasn’t even that long ago.

Ultimately, it’s quite likely that another team signs him to a better deal where he may play a bigger role.

LaFell and Hogan were both oversized slot receivers that the Patriots acquired to play outside, and I wonder if Matthews could fit into a comparable role. I just can’t imagine a scenario where Matthews’ best chance at a rebound year is to compete for a #3 WR job that already has productive contenders like Hogan and Britt.

He certainly would be better than paying Allen $5 mil.

Or, in addition to Allen. Allen's contract can be restructured down to around $2.5M pretty easily, and the Pats have gone with two blocking TEs in the past. With the uncertainty at tackle, that might not be a bad way to go.

I'm not basing my opinion of Allen on statistics, which I also know can be misleading.

I'm basing my opinion of Allen on my eyeballs, which have too often told me that when we needed a big kick to bail us out or to pin the opponent, he didn't deliver.

I am sure that BB who might be the GOAT when it comes to ST coaching and evaluating has an eye on his punter and whether he performs below or above expectations. And from everything we know he his happy with the way Allen punts.

But whatever we all know that you can't stand BB.

Mathews could be a bigger version of Welker here.

Edelman already is a bigger version of Welker.

The question I'd have about both Matthews and Britt is whether or not they can block as well as Edelman, Amendola, Hogan, or even Dorsett.

Except Edelman is 32 coming off a serious injury.

Even so, why not just say that Matthews could be a bigger version of Edelman than compare him to the guy that Edelman replaced several years ago?

In any case, Matthews had surgery in mid-December for a knee ligament tear and an ankle sprain, both of which had been bothering him since the 2016 season, so it's not as if he's guaranteed to be 100% by September, either.

Bottom line if Matthews and Niklas are signed:

WR: Cooks
Edelman
Hogan
Mitchell
Britt
Dorsett
Matthews
McCarron
Patterson

TE:
Gronk
Allen
Tye ( I really like this kid)
Hollister
Niklas

Serious camp competition. I could see 3 or 4 WRs cut from that bunch, and two TEs, and I don't think any of those potential six cuts will be out of a job for long.

1st-world problems.

There would have to be AT LEAST 4 WRs and 2 TES cut.

Some of them may very well be in their last chance.

Any word on Jordan Matthews?
I feel he could be tied to Brandin Cooks near future with the team.

I don’t see how. He isn’t a replacement at all. He would be somwhere in the mix as 3/4/5 wr behind cooks and Edelman. There is absolutely no reason to move cooks especially to downgrade to a far lesser player.
