ESPN's Darlington: Gronk "frustrated" with BB; likely to play for NE if Brady is there

"People close to Gronk" is most definitely a "single source", in fact it's likely to be multiple sources.

Feel free to keep whistling, though. As for myself, I'm well aware there's a graveyard nearby.

No name = No source. Nothing to see here, move on. (whistling)

I doubt them when they say they have a team source, or a Patriots source, or a league source, or a source close to Gronk. "Sources say?" That means they know the same thing you do, but they are repackaging it and selling it to you.

Also, Gronk being pretty certain means he's got a scale and as Mr. Kraft puts more gold on it, he becomes more certain, real certain, then voila on to 2018.

The media knows the same thing we do, and are simply repackaging it? I beg to differ.

Again, as I said in my previous post, *no one* had any inkling that Gronk was pondering retirement (or pondering whether he'd return) prior to his comments and the subsequent reporting on the matter post-Super Bowl.

It seems this is indeed legitimate news, and claiming that this was already known seems absurd. I'd be surprised if you could find one post or mention of Gronk and retirement prior to the events that followed the Super Bowl.

Unnamed/anonymous sources can be legitimate despite your notion that in order for a source to be valid it must be disclosed who said source is.

But what I find hilarious through all of this is that the man himself, Gronk, the ultimate source and authority on this matter, has indicated that he's unsure if he'll return.

What more does anyone need to realize this is a legitimate and relevant story?

So, as fans what are you suggesting our reaction should be? Displeasure with Belichick? Disappointment over Gronk and Brady reportedly being tired of "hard coaching" and not being appreciated? Honestly, if that's really true then my previously lofty opinion of both those guys has fallen significantly.

I love Gronk and his personality a lot but sometimes he need's to shut the **** up.

I saw on Comcast that the guys there thought that bb busted trust in the locker room when he signed Gilmore and let the butler drama drag on all off season.

Apparently bb preaches that if you are all in on the team, then he is all in on you. And the guys in the locker room all know butler was all in, yet bb hung him out to dry and signed Gilmore for a ton of money instead. It left players feeling bb was not exactly trustworthy.

Add in gilmore’s Inability to play zone and you have a defensive meeting room full of people that don’t understand why bb went off script.

It was posted by Mike Florio shortly BEFORE the game.

"This is 99% a wild guess, but I won't be surprised if Gronk retires after the game."

I'm not sure where the basis for the story on Comcast originated, but that makes little sense. Go back to Milloy in 2003. He was a team captain and an "all in" guy. Vinatieri? Same deal. He brought in Talib and Revis before Butler. That is but a few.

You seem to be implying if you give it your all, BB will keep you. He certainly expects players will do their jobs on the field, and will absolutely drop kick you out the door if you don't, but nothing in his actions suggests you will be promised a future if you work hard.

His stated goal is to put the best product on the field, and he pursues that goal ruthlessly. If players saw Gilmore as a break from that then the locker room IQ is dropping. Roosevelt Colvin, Adalius Thomas, etc. It has been a historical fact, and nothing new to report. It amounts to "we wanted Butler not Gilmore," to which BB would likely respond "I don't recall asking you who you want on the roster."

Yup

They can sign him to a multi million dollar contract. When he winds up with mediocre numbers like virtually everyone else that has left NE that thought they were the reason for the teams success he will still be a Man Child.

The movie offers and celebrity gigs will dry up.

Who believes they were the reason for the patriots success

You sound like a bitter homer

I have no qualms what gronk has given of himself to the game....he will always be top shelf in my book

Good luck finding someone else to do that....he already has all the money he will ever need

It was quite literally his own words that brought this to light. No one had any inkling Gronk was considering retirement until post-Super Bowl, when he verbally indicated he hadn't determined whether he was returning for the following season.

Must have missed the "actual quote" from Gronk. Could you post a link? A link that actually has a quote that is.

I'll bite. Brady has stated emphatically that was not the case, and JAG, as the "dumped on" one cast from the Patriots by Brady, thanked Brady for his big deal with the Niners. Other than this 'rumor' celebrating the collapse of Camelot and all the things failing in the Pats organization, is there anything from the actual individuals that supports this? Or is your rumor pure tinfoil hat stuff that goes with the rest of this speculation as to what happened in the JAG trade?

The difference between Brady-Bledsoe and Brady-JAG is Brady outplayed Bledsoe and earned the starting job, and Bledsoe had no interest in playing backup so was traded. JAG never outplayed Brady (his 1.5 regular season games when asked to play 4 as starter were pure electricity), but is good enough to start in the NFL and was in a contract year. Brady, by all reports, believes he outworks others and wins his role (if the man is a diva, he has rings, MVPs and a ridiculously low salary hit that would suggest otherwise). Favre didn't have nearly the work ethic, and there are plenty of reports he was a diva to Rodgers from actual players because he saw the future. You will likely find few "thank you" statements from Rodgers on the awesome mentoring.
I never believe what athletes or coaches say in press conferences for a long time as they are trained like politicians: they tell you what you want to hear.

Your points are fair and I should've specified in my original post that I didn't exactly believe this rumor but if so, Brady is hypocritical.

As time goes on, Gronk seems increasingly like a privileged baby. Maybe he should try scraping by actually working for a living to get a little perspective.
Not really fair. While Gronk doesn’t have to “scrape by”, none of us will have to live with the back, arm, leg, head injuries he’s sustained. Not fair to call him “a privileged baby”. We have no access to what happens behind the scenes. I find it a little hard to believe that all of a sudden guys like Gronk and Brady just became babies.

Yes, my heart bleeds for the twentysomething multimillionaire superstar athlete who is built like a Greek god, is forging a budding career in show biz and has the entire world virtually at his fingertips. Poor fella is so "abused" and "debilitated" he can't even enjoy a freaking walk in the park!
Tell that to all the former athletes that are suing the NFL right now.

While it's his choice to play this game, I think you're missing the point so I'll say it again. Lots of money and being built like "Greek God" means nothing when you can't do anything with it. And Gronk is on that path.

Health is the real wealth.

Oh, the poor guy! How does he even make it to the bathroom in the morning?! How does he lift those $2 million checks with a bad arm?! How does he muster the physical courage with a bad back and injured head to do THIS:

Not fair to call him “a privileged baby”.

I'm not talking at all about Brady. I'm referring to Gronk (if the reports are true) waffling about his commitment like an entitled diva in what looks like a cynical ploy for more $$$ from the Patriots. If he wants to leave football and be a WWE clown or make bad movies, FINE. Just stop stringing everyone along and playing childish games. It's time for him to grow the eff up.

Maybe ... just maybe ...

Belichick thought Gronk would grow up at some point ... thus some friction.

The problem is a number of players are supposedly not happy here. it's not just Gronk,.

My mom tells me that when I stare at my computer too long

Let's hope and pray the poor dears can find fulfillment where winning is less of a priority than having "fun" and being "happy."

Here is another example of the ridiculousness of this whole thing. USA Today has a story about the "frustration" Gronk feels and it attributes it's source as the same ESPN writer who made up the whole thing. It just seems that ESPN has a lot of breaking stories about an organization that never talks to the press. And people just take it as fact <shakes head> I guess nowadays 'reading is believing' no need to see or say it!

Sorry

Sorry, ain't buyin' it.
No bigger Butler supporter than me on this board BUT. .. BB always does whatever he does in the best interest of the team.
Go back to when Gilmore was signed- there was no doubt Butler had been the better cb before Gilmore got here: Butler had a pro bowl and was All-Pro. Gilmore had never been All-Pro and made one probowl as a backup. Anyone who watched knew Malcolm was better. Their speed was about the same, both very physical, Butler the better tackler.
Ok, so maybe some Pats players had doubts THEN, or maybe even more early last year when Gilmore struggled big-time early in the season.
But by the end of the year, there was no doubt- Gilmore had become the better player.
BB saw this. Gilmore always had potential. The hope was he would achieve that by being in the Pats system.
He did. Ironically, I think having Malcom playing across from him helped him reach that potential. Butler is super-competitive,as is everybody in the Pats secondary.
So BB was proved right with the Gilmore signing. By the the end of the regular season, every Pats player knew it.
What made it worse, Butler had his worse year as a pro. You'd think he would have stepped up in a contract year.
So I ain't buyin' that Comcast phony BS.

Not much fazes me when it comes to the NFL:

Want to retire early and save your body and mind? Be my guest. Want to act like a frat boy wanna be? Knock yourself out. Want to star in a virtual infomercial during your playoff run? Sure why not. Want to hold out for more money because life in the NFL is shorter than a fruit fly's life? I understand. Even if you decide to thin out the general population a bit during the off season...I can live with that.

But act like passive aggressive little bit#@$...well this dude can't abide.
