I agree with this completely. That’s the dynamic that’s screwing the good teams with less cap space.

Kareem Martin

This guy got $7 million a year from the Giants. I’ll defer to some more knowledgable posters on this board if he’s any good but a backup EDGE rusher that’s never recorded 2 sacks in a season sounds like a JAG.

And the Pats have Shelton for $2M in 2018, and around $9M total for two seasons if they pick up his 5th-year option.

Beau Allen isn't good, this is a massive overpay. Teams are just drunk sailors right now.

It's basically the equivalent to people buying fixer upper houses and then flipping them in certain areas and artificially inflating home values. Meanwhile, the house still has zero insulation.

The money being thrown around is stupid makes finding and developing home grown talent even more important.
It happens every year. The numbers just look bigger because the cap is bigger. Rising cap doesn’t get spread across the roster, 95% of it goes to the top 30% or so of players.
Then the players fail, or the team understands it overpaid and they cut the player and eat dead money.
Every year almost half of the playoff teams change. There are a few that are consistently there and one of the things they have in common is not lusting after the shiny new free agent.

Pats Pulpit a few weeks ago had an article where it thought he could be an under-the-radar Patriots signing. https://www.patspulpit.com/2018/2/18/17023822/2018-nfl-free-agency-underutilized-backup-new-england-patriots-burkhead-bademosi-flowers-lewis-Hogan. Sounded good to me, and I used Shea McClellin as a comp and adjusted 30% for inflation and came up with a 3 year, $11.5M deal from the Patriots. Under $4M a year. He gets $7 and didn't even play in 50% of his team's snaps last year. Wow.

Beau friggin Allen for $5 million a year.

Near JAG level players are getting $4-7 million per season (Taylor Gabriel & Ryan Grant’s contracts still make little sense to me).

I don’t think a middle class FA exists anymore for the Pats to be active in days 2-3 as they have been in years past.
The middle class is where this happens. Some get overpaid and the patriots wait it out and get the bargains.

But he had a sack. A. One. Uno.

I don't think we will like the price tag. But they have to bring somebody..

Thoughts on Casillas? Have good memories of him back in 2014. Wouldn’t want him starting, but did see a lot of starting action for the Giants. Could make nice depth at LB.
Good, versatile player to be a complement of our LB corp for reasonable price.Additionally he is familiar with the system.
