Well we offered a 3rd for Bennett. Seattle only got a 5th rounder and an undrafted WR in return from the Eagles. So maybe they were afraid to deal Bennett to the Pats but would rather face Bennett on a team that is in the same conference in the Eagles?

Doesn't quite make sense to me. IMO a 3rd is more valuable than a 5th and a UDFA WR who had 5 catches for 45 yards last year.

Given the Seahawks' cap situation and the likelihood that they'll lose Paul Richarson in FA, that WR may have been more valuable to them than we know.

I tend to think the Rapaport report is BS.

What team in their right mind would refuse a 3rd over a 5th?

The deal isn’t done until the deal is done. “Honor” has nothing to do with it.

Yea Seahawks are stupid and it looks stupid on their part

Not really as marty was never gonna stay for $6m

Did you read the linked article? It specifically says Martellus was willing to take less for a chance to play with his brother. "First of all, the Bennett brothers were going nuts trying to get it somehow so they could play together on the Patriots. I know Martellus Bennett was talking about taking less salary, trying to stick around so the Patriots could then trade for his brother."

Sucks we had the better offer and it didn't happen..would have been huge addition

TL;DR and I don't believe he would have taken as deep a cut the Pats are thinking.

Ignoring the potential that ...
1) the "report" about the Pats' offer isn't gospel and may well be an unfounded rumor
2) acquiring that WR as part of the deal may have been extremely important to the Seahawks.

Didn’t realize that was the case...

Yeah, it was a big deal in the media right after the injury occurred and for about two weeks. And then the media was all like, "Oooh! This other guy said something stupid! Let's all go over there!!"

So, there's been scant mention since about Halloween. You know how these things go.

I think Marty winds up back with us, don't think any teams would be interested in signing him imo

Could be.

Even if he isn't going to be nearly the receiver in 2018 that he was in 2016, he should still be able to block pretty well, and he was a very good blocker. He could be good for another season or two in a blocking/mentoring role similar to what Crumpler did for the Pats in 2010 with rookies Gronk and Ahern.

I don't know if Martellus would accept that role, but - if he was willing ...

The thing is, if a team that drafts Gesicki or a similar TE (all catch/no block) is smart, they'd pay Marty $2M-$3M guaranteed to play that Crumpler role for a season.

I don't know that the Pats would do that unless Gronk actually goes away - at which point, all bets are off.
