Dolphins suppose to release Suh I prefer Poe but both would look great on our d line.
Suh will not be given enough $ here. Poe? Maybe.

That 3rd for 5th and Bennett rumor seems a bit off since its a bit much to trade away for him. I don't think that's something the Patriots would actually offer.

If it is, it highlights the VERY aggressive GM approach that Belichick has been adopting recently.

Oddly aggressive. Seems a bit much to give up for an older player. Let’s imagine it is true. We can no longer technically rule out anyone making that type of money coming to the team. Bill clearly sees a need on the D-Line and is hell bent on getting it fixed, and sadly being willing to give up a 3rd and a 5th for Bennett might also point to how B.B. and Co. actually see the talent level in this draft. If that’s the case, really disappointed.

It was stated unclearly, but I think the deal was supposed to be read as, the Pats trade a 3rd for (Bennett + a 5th). The Eagles traded a 5th for (Bennett + a 7th).
I’m thinking that maineman is onto something with the wording here, because I agree that giving up a 3+5 would seem to be really odd.

Kind of sucks that we missed out on this one.

There's some talent on the d line in this draft if they get someone earlier. I am surprised belichick would give up a 3rd just like that.

This.
And they also are getting back some injured talent that could make a year 2 leap. I think last year’s Dline looked gassed into the late season. The added depth should also help the quality of play.

In the actual deal, the Eagles gave up a 5th and WR Marcus Johnson in exchange for Bennett and a 7th. Johnson is a 6'1"/204 UDFA from 2017 who turns 24 in early August - speedy, athletic kid who turned in a reported 4.38/40 to go with a 37" vertical, an 11'3" broad jump, and 22 bench reps at his Texas pro day. He appeared in 10 games for the Eagles, catching 5 of 8 tgts for 45 yds. That's not a lot, but, considering how many other pass-catchers Wentz had at his disposal, the fact that Johnson saw the field and tgts at all may indicate some significant potential.

It's been rumored that the Seahawks will be letting Paul Richarson walk in free agency, so the inclusion of Johnson may have been as important to them as getting the 5th-rounder.

So, we don't know for certain whether or not the reports of the Pats "bidding" for Bennett are actually true. But we can still look at what the Pats had to offer and speculate that the Pats may have been willing to trade their 4th for Bennett, but that the Seahawks wanted Dorsett, too. If the Pats didn't want to lose Dorsett, maybe they then counter-proposed with their 3rd for Bennett and a 5th.

That probably seems like a higher cost than it really is, since the Pats 3rd is near the end of the round (#95) and the Seahawks 5th would have been near the beginning of the round (#141) - a trade back of 46 spots for Bennett. In terms of pick point-value, it would have been the equivalent of trading an early 4th-rounder.

I think that BB has always had a bit of a preference for building the roster with a good mix of NFL players with some proven chops - especially at certain positions (e.g., RB) and under certain circumstances (e.g., if the age/experience level of a positional unit skews very young) . As has been discussed elsewhere on the forum, that preference may have become stronger since the new CBA limited practices and, perhaps slowed the development of rookies somewhat.

In 2017, a very large percentage of DL snaps were, of necessity, given to two rookies - Butler and Wise. With the only Branch-replacement on the roster being 24-year-old Valentine and the possibility of adding yet another rookie draftee, the average age/experience level of the 2018 DL will skew even lower than it did in 2017. So, BB attempting to trade for a relatively affordable, accomplished veteran DL may have been a response to that situation, at least in part. Dropping back 46 spots in the draft to address that maybe doesn't seem all that aggressive, under those circumstances.

NE only offered a 3rd round pick for Bennett and a 5th round pick.

I've heard this a few times in various places but it doesn't make sense. They'd save less than $4M in cap space and incur over $22M in dead money. They would save $28M on next season's cap, though only $17M would be from salary.

BTW, what a terrible contract. Gotta love the Lolphins.

Seattle has 3 5th round picks #4,9,and 31(formerly ours) if they were offering the 4th of the 5th round the 46 spots is correct any of the others and you need to add the drop of spots to the 46. I find it odd that Seattle would pass on getting a third round pick from us considering they don't have one in the third round. The loss of one of their fifth round picks (three of them) would be minimal. Does anyone else think that the return to the Pats on trades is somewhat low balled? Mainman do you think BB would be in on Poe? I would love having a big fatty to provide cover for some athletic linebackers.

My apologies. It does appear that I read that wrong. Thanks.

Damn, flowers and Bennett lined up on the inside on passing downs would of been nice.

Well we offered a 3rd for Bennett. Seattle only got a 5th rounder and an undrafted WR in return from the Eagles. So maybe they were afraid to deal Bennett to the Pats but would rather face Bennett on a team that is in the same conference in the Eagles?

Doesn't quite make sense to me. IMO a 3rd is more valuable than a 5th and a UDFA WR who had 5 catches for 45 yards last year.

Seattle already had a deal in place with the eagles before the pats called. Belichick was late to the party...

Another Mike Tannenbaum Special.

Bedard says a Seahawks source refutes the report that the Patriots made an offer that was higher but too late.

Poe is roughly the requisite size for a true NT in the Pats scheme. He's had five years of productive experience in Crennel's and then Bob Sutton's 3-4 in KC, and now a year of productive experience in the Falcons' 4-3, so he's probably fairly well-acquainted with many of the DL concepts, schemes and assignments that the Pats use.

I like Poe better as an all-around player than I do Wilkerson, and he's likely to be cheaper, but I don't know if he'll be cheaper enough. His one year with Atlanta cost them $8M ($7.5M of that guaranteed). Dimitroff said recently that they'd "like to keep him", but . . . So, I'd guess that, at age 27/nearly 28, he's looking to cash in for a long term deal that seems likely to be out of the Pats price range, cap-wise.

WRT the Micheal Bennett deal, I give virtually zero credence to post-deal rumors/media reports that the Pats had put in a bid. However, looking at the actual deal in the context of Seattle's cap and free agency situation, the WR they received may have been more important to them than their potential "profit" on the draft pick exchange.
