Solder turns 30 in April.

Anything more than a 2 year deal for similar money is dumb. Bill knows this.

If he walks he walks.
But 30 is not old for an OT; good OTs play well past that age. Solder arguably has four more solid seasons in him.

30 is at the front-end of decline. Either way paying a 34 year old $10m is dumb. Paying a 32 year old is ok

Assuming Solder is en route to declining because he's 30 seems a stretch. A capable LT is a premium buy, especially with Brady at QB. I don't know about $10 million at age 34, but a contract that could keep Solder here three or four more seasons at a mutually agreed-upon price would not be unreasonable.

By 4 years from now every LT will be making 10 mill a year. 34 is not old for an Ol.

"Mutually guaranteed" is the crux of the matter.

After September Solder was outstanding. If they can get that for 2-3 more years, im all in.

A 3rd year is a benefit to the patriots. The compensation issue is guaranteed money and first year salary, and perhaps 2nd year salary.

Adding a 3rd year only benefits the patriots. It allows us to spread the signing bonus over 3 years, AND provides an option for the patriots in case they want him to play for the 3rd year at the contract amount.

All depends on the cap hit if cut when he is 33.

You know he is an outlier.
Brady is an outlier, but most good quarterbacks are not washed up by age 34, and even the backups like Matt Cassell, age 35, manage to stick around.

Sure but paying a backup at 35 a mid to lowllevel salary is different than paying a 34 year old LT $10m

i agree that they shouldnt do anything more than 2 years, but if they let him walk they better be damn sure they have a viable replacement

Brady will be 41, the offensive line is an area they may need to over-invest in at this point in his career.. It would be a tragedy if they lose Solder and replace him with some average LT that lets Brady take blind side shots every weekend

Agree. I don't see anyone filling in for Nate in 2018. At least Solder was there when Light hung them up in 2011.

If they want to give him a top 5 at-market deal for the first two years of the deal I'd be ok with it. Anything more than that smacks of desperation.
