Garcia health update

Sucks man....really bad timing for us. If he had played out the 2017 season, we might not be primed to pay Nate Solder 13M+ a year in a few days. Not that I dislike Solder...would have been nice to have clarity....

Between Waddle and Fleming....I prefer Waddle I think.

Doubtful that Garcia would have had any impact on this offseasons decision on Solder. He was never a plug and play option and certainly not at LT.

Not that I expected him to be a plug and play LT in his first season. I expected him to be looked at extensively over the past year much like Croston was never placed on the PS all year. If he had shown progress...we would have likely let Solder walk and re-sign Waddle to a short term mid-level deal (6-7M a year or something)...and had Garcia compete with Waddle for snaps or play on the right side if Cannon gets dinged.....

If you think anyone else on the roster can be LT then this can still happen. Garcia really had no impact on that. A good camp this year for him might have made whoever will be left of our veteran backup tackles redundant but thats about it.

The issue is for him being in the same football shape he was before the injuries. I presume that Garcia was in top football shape for at least 10 years, playing a season of football every year.

A year off is a serious problem, especially when he lost his rookie year of getting NFL habits and physical understanding of plays and blocking.

The only thing that's going to get him in football shape is getting healthy enough to get into camp and get reps. The diet I recommended is what will beef him up to be able to allow him to do just that.

If Garcia was healthy all year then yeah we'd have a better idea of what we have and it WOULD have an impact on whether to try and keep Solder for what it will cost to keep him. With his uncertain health for even this upcoming season that scenario is out of the window. I have to agree with the original poster on that.

It makes no sense. Unless you think that Garcia would have developed in one season into a NFL level LT. You still would need an insurance for this offseason to make a safe transition in case he didnt make the projected jump. Realistically, at best he would have been our primary swing tackle in 2018 which affects Fleming or Waddle but not Solder. The entire point is that you really dont want to go into a season without a proven LT. Because any issue there dramatically shrinks your playbook because of the added pass protection that is necessary.

I want to re-sign Solder, yes. But if that doesn't happen and if Garcia was healthy all of last year then the decision on how to fill that spot would be easier to diagnose is all. If Solder bolts then we likely have to draft a tackle high in the draft and try to fill other needs through FA. Hopefully, Cannon comes back healthy.
And no, I don't really think Garcia would have developed in one year into a plug and play LT, but stranger things have happened, but at least BB would have had a MUCH better idea of what he has with him. Now, there's really no idea, even for this upcoming season.

1) Agree; even if completely healthy, he likely would've been a game-day inactive all season.

Sorry, @luuked , usually I'm with you on evaluations, but a healthy Garcia could have absolutely pushed for playing time. He was one of the nastiest and most athletic players I've watched in college in a long while (in fact, he reminded me a bit of Shaq Mason), and I think a year under Scar would have catapulted him in front of Waddle and Fleming with ease. He could be better than Solder in time. He redirects more cleanly on inside moves, which is something Solder has struggled with at times in his career.

Maybe he busts, but we'll never know how a healthy season may have developed.

Then the took over starting LT full time in his second year, so I assume Garcia would have followed a similar arc if healthy. I am saying that if he stayed healthy he would have had a similar arc that Solder had just about a year delayed. I dont think he would have been more than a swing tackle last year because he was not ready. Neither in terms of strength nor in terms of technique. He was a third round pick for a reason relative to Solder in 2011.

Even if he got the chance to fill in for Cannon last year I dont think he would have been there yet to the point where you would say we can think about letting Solder go. Unless all stars aligned and he really knocked it out of the park you really dont want to replace your LT with a second year guy who has not proven himself. The LT is a marquee position that requires a lot of extra attention.

Anyway.. I will stop here because we are talking about hypotheticals that are ultimately pointless. And, yes, its my own fault for having started this conversation.

But his a swing tackle ... He will be ou could be a LT because we don't have other options. It's like HT as a ED or Jummy Graham as a WR.

I really can't count on Garcia to be our LT this year. Either we resign Nate Solder or we draft one early in the 1st/2nd round. Protecting Brady has to be a top priority if we want to see Brady go for ring #6 anytime soon.

But yeah hopefully the kid comes back strong after 'redshirting' his rookie year. That would make a good story if he did, but I'm expecting he will have a bit of a struggle making it. Maybe he'll be as good as Marcus Cannon one day, we'll see.
