Alex Smith will be TRADED to Redskins

Just considering that as done, for purposes of speculation, off of something I posted earlier:

Buffalo
NYJ
Denver
Cleveland
Arizona
NYG (?)

As of right now, that may (not will, but may) be all the teams looking for QBs, and willing to shell out starter money or high draft picks this year.

Cousins
Bradford
Keenum
Bridgewater

That would shorten things to

Buffalo
NYJ
Arizona
Cleveland
NYG (?)

with the 3 Vikings QBs still out there and unsigned (but at least one assumed to go back to the Vikings), and with at least the Giants having a real decision to make as far as how they view the QBs already on their roster. Thanks to Washington and Jacksonville, the QB draft is (at least potentially) getting more and more Patriots friendly.

But they were already. I think that’s a fine spot for him, but I think that team is about to hit some growing pains as is besides getting a new QB/leader.

Just lol at this whole thing really. I think Cousins could elevate the right team, and I think DEN or JAX is prob best for him, but he’s going to get paid like he’s TB/Brees/Rodgers and all the expectations that go with that will (rightfully so) be on him, and he’s....not.

Just reshuffling the deck chairs on the HMS 9-7 First Round Playoff Loss Express.

Very interesting point (in bold). Totally agree.

Just read a Bill Barnwell piece suggesting that the Cousins deal is going to be highest in the league because this is one of the rare occasions a quality starting QB (Barnwell refers to him as a Franchise QB) hits the open market without injury related questions (like Brees w/ a rotator cuff injury or Manning w/ neck injury).

Matt Stafford got 5 years / $135M with $87M in the first 3 years

Barnwell suggests that Cousins could get $90-100M in solid guarantees within the first 3 years with something like a 5 / $150M type deal (which would end before Cousins turns 35.)

I find this so interesting because of what it means for other QB's needing new contracts - Barnwell looks to Matt Ryan and Aaron Rodgers. Both of those guys deserve to be paid north of what Stafford and Cousins get, so, ouch to those salary caps.

Ryan's deal ends after the 2018 season (age 33 as UFA).
Rodgers's deal ends after 2019 season (age 36 as UFA).

For what it's worth, Tom Brady's Contract details: ending after 2019 season (age 42 UFA).

It’s true lol you fellas need to learn to use twitter.com!
When you come and break a news story, common courtesy is to provide a link. My fifth grade teacher spreads rumors about Kim Kardashian on twitter, so it isn't like that is some reliable source.

How can a free agent sign a deal before the free agent signing period? This would also constitute tampering.

Just reporting what I’m hearing...

I am curious how the donkeys can make this move without cutting some players. Are they cheating the cap again?

He's not getting signed by anyone until the NFL new year kicks off.

Just as an FYI, overthecap.com has very complete, accurate and detailed cap and player contract information for every team. It's generally worth checking the site while trying to figure out what teams may be able to afford what free agents.

Arizona Cardinals Salary Cap | Over the Cap

According to them, ARZ has about $8.7M in 2018 cap space at the moment, and about 30 free agents to sign. However, until Palmer officially retires, the Cards cap expenditures still include his (non-guaranteed) $12.5M salary and $1.5M roster bonus for 2018. Once that happens, the Cards would have just under $23M in free space.

Even after Palmer is off the books, however, they'll still have almost $100M of their cap tied up in just 8 players: Fitz, Peterson, Chandler Jones, Mathieu, Veldheer, Iupati, Bucannon and Gresham.

Thanks I’ll have to go check the cap situations for each team. Saw something that zona is expecting to waive AP, id expect a few others that you mentioned to go as well.

Apparently this is coming from Colin Cowherd. I can't find an actual place where Cowherd himself is reporting this - just people tweeting / posting about him reporting it.

I expect this one to be walked back until confirmed by Schefter or Rappaport.
It can’t be confirmed.
Cousins is under contract with the redskins until the end of the league year at which point he either is franchised or becomes a free agent. Denver is forbidden from speaking to him. Washington can’t give permission because they do not have his rights after this league year so cannot trade him.
No way there is anything to this.

umm isn't this tampering?

Cousins is scheduled to be a free agent, there is no way Denver can talk to him. Technically he is still under contract with Washington until after the SB
Even then then can’t talk to him until the free agent signing period unless Washington tries to tag and trade when that time comes.

Lmao that’s either true and it’s tampering, or false

The Pats may also soon have a gaping hole at "receiving TE" behind Gronk - with Allen at $5M and Bennett at $6.2M (and turning 31) for 2018. At the start of the new league year, Bennett is due $2M guaranteed for 2018, so something will need to happen quickly there.

Also, Lewis and Burkhead aren't locks to re-sign with the Pats.

Still probably not sufficient reason to devote $5M in cap space (or thereabouts) on yet another "elderly" WR.

I cant wait for people after the SB winning high will wear off will go stupid when the Pats cut Bennett to avoid that guaranteed bonus but keep Allen. Good times ahead..

Lewis/Burkhead will be fascinating to watch especially because Burkhead was a complete idea by BB. He made it a priority and not the pro scouting dept or anyone else. Will be another interesting offseason.

Again, I didn’t break a news story. I didn’t start this thread lol

Also, Twitter is a source the same way a newspaper is a source... it’s a medium for a reliable (or unreliable) source to put out information. If you open Twitter and see shefty and rap saying it happened, there’s your source. If it’s your fifth grade teacher, maybe not
