The Jaguars offense is actually worse than you think

Yeah, although I agree that their defense is somewhat overrated, I also don’t think it’s quite what you’re suggesting in this post.

Pittsburgh led the NFL in sacks with 56, which is one more than Jacksonville (55), so there’s that. Contrary to your post, they also allowed less rushing yards per attempt than NE at 4.42 versus our 4.68. Of course, that also equates to less rushing yards per game, too. They allowed around 109, where we allowed 111.

They allowed one of the lower yards for passing against per game at 201, compared to our 248, and they had the same record at 13-3, so it can’t all be attributed to the popular “garbage time” theory. Overall, they allowed way less total yards per game at 310 vs our 360. They also created more turnovers at 1.29 per game vs our 1.06.

Holding teams to “way less” points was the difference between 18.24 (5th) and 20.76 (11th) per game, so that’s where we came out on top. If you said that our defense was much better from game #7 forward, then I’d definitely agree with you, because there’s no doubt about that one.

True, but still so overrated. For me, all that matters is points given up. I could care less about yards, pass yards, run yards, etc. I want less points and thats what this defense does.

I think they’re a couple of players in the secondary away, but 2-3 years ago their defense was atrocious. I agree with you that they’re overrated, but they’ve certainly improved.

i hate to take the wind out of your sails here, but to quote the greatest philosopher in history, "it doesn't matter if you win by an inch or a mile winning's winning" Saying points are "not legit" because they came because of a short field is silly nonsense. Ask the packers if they would rather have some "not legit" touchdowns when they ended up losing to the seahawks because they couldn't get into the end zone after the defense got them turn overs.

What are the Jags redzone stats?

Steelers defense is so overrated. They really aren't that good. We are much better at stopping the run than they were and hold teams to way less points. Still don't get why Pittsburgh's defense gets so much love these days.

are you a “life”long fan of the pats?

i actually agree and i have been saying kevin colbert and his defensive draft picks have either been very mediocre or bad for a while now.

they were giving up 30+ points per week at home for like 6 weeks.

if our d was doing that, espn, sports radio, trolls and some pats fans, would be mocking bb and saying he was done as a defensive coach.

instead, we get very misleading analysis as i watch everyone from
mariota to brett hundley, to kizer, to bortles, walrtz up and down the field.

one thing i feel really, really good about is the wildly underrated pats d, angered without any respect.

they will
come out frothing at the mouth again and jax will not like the results.

i have yet to see one pundit, sports radio or tv program, mention one word of the pats d and how good it has been when healthy.

Not that I am defending the guy you are responding to but reading this sentence made me question why anyone at this point even considers anything that happened before the middle of October. At least in the context of upcoming matchups I really see no value adding in even more oranges into a comparison that should indicate future outcomes.

Again, I doubt very much that he actually suggested looking only at the more recent games (like you mentioned).

Pretty sure that never happened. They gave up more than 30 once all season, in a high scoring 39-38 affair that they won with BAL. The time they gave up 30 was early in the year with JAX in October, not during the stretch you’re talking about, and even in that game it wasn’t about their defensive struggles. It was about Big Ben throwing pick sixes and turning the ball over 5 times.

The bottom line is that PIT’s defense is overrated, but not quite to the point that the poster was suggesting. You don’t end up leading the NFL in sacks, giving up around 200 yards in passing per game, and have the 11th ranked scoring defense if you suck as bad as he was suggesting.

Anyway, who cares? They are at least a couple of players away in the secondary. Maybe they fix that issue. Maybe they don’t. They’ll probably still be a 10+ win team no matter what, at least for the immediate future.

A competing hypothesis is that the Jaguars are in fact very good at scoring points on defense, off long plays, on short drives, and so on, given that they've scored a consistently large number of points in such a manner over the course of the season. What's more notable is that they're capable of winning games even when they don't (see Buffalo in the Wild Card round). As someone noted above, points are points.

Gotta agree with this.

The similarity is misleading. Pitt's run defense went to **** down the stretch, presumably in part because of losing Shazier, whereas NE's figures are inflated due to personnel issues they no longer have and late-game strategy. The current gap between the two units is quite large.

It also should be pointed out that Pitt's secondary is dependent on a healthy pass rush. They simply aren't capable of carrying extra weight if the QB has time. I'm much more confident in NE's ability to limit damage if Jax's OL plays that well again this Sunday.

Brett hundley and gb took them to the hilt. Pretty sure i watched mariota and tenn walk up and down the field on them as did deshone kizer, so yeah i am pretty sure it all happened. Balt and jax dropping 35 points+ takes the cake.

Also, sacks collection does not prove they are good. Dupree and watt stink. Dumber than rocks.

Gotta agree with this.

Ugh. Shazier is so overrated. The injury tuitt has more to do with their already mediocre run d, not to mention their edges suck with watt and dupree.

You claimed that they allowed “30+ in 6 straight weeks where they were at home.”

That did not happen. Actually, they only allowed 30+ more than once during that late season streak, in a 39-38 victory over BAL. Of course, there was the postseason game to JAX, too.

Yep, I pointed out that they’re still a couple of secondary players away from having a quality defense, but they’re still not as bad as the poster suggested.

Dude, i really don’t care. 4 weeks? This is not a dissertation. The point is, the pattern of their crap defense down the stretch was there, i had pointed it out because the dumb, lying media ignored it, and here we are.

Nothing more, nothing less. Pitt’s d is mediocre and in spots, bad. That is the premise.

Green bay scored 28 with brett hundley. What do you think rodgers would have done? and cleveland were storming up and down the field, almost scoring 30. How about this? 25 to crap teams and 30+ to crap offenses led by hundley, flacco and flacco jr (bortles)? Does that work for you?

No mention from the media....the point is, if that was our d, it would be all over the news.

I’m not busting your balls to be a **** about it. I responded to your comment about the Steelers “allowing 30+ in 6 straight home games” by pointing out that it only happened twice.

You then continue to pretend like it did, by suddenly moving the 6 game mark down to 4. That’s not true, either. They allowed 30+ points in 2 games down the stretch that you’re referring to. You chose to pick the point total, not me. Like I said before—who cares, so we’re on the same page there, aside from our very slight difference of opinions on exactly how bad they were.

Dupree has been very dissapointing. They have had to depend on the draft because they have no cap space.

absolutely. been saying it for years....even hanging onto harrison proves they hate jarvis jones and now bud dupree. watt is next..watt plays a 3-4 and just swings wide on every snap. he has no power and is very lean up top. they should
move him to middle lb and draft a pure 3-4 olb guy in the draft to fix that problem.

comical to watch the media assume
what pitt does is always golf because it is pitt

dude, i just don’t care. i am not going back to look at each final score. i know what i saw ob my tv screen.

Well, no offense to you, but we tend to hold each other accountable here in an attempt to prevent the spreading of bad information, particularly when that information is blatantly incorrect.

Again—you were the one who chose the 6 games of 30+ point mark, so it shouldn’t be difficult for you to understand why someone would simply point out the fact that “your” 6 was actually only 2. It’s quite a big difference, that’s all. It’s not exactly a minor nitpick.

As mentioned earlier, we agree that the Steelers defense is overrated, so it’s probably best to move on. Screw Pittsburgh anyway. I’m not sure why we’re even discussing them.
