NFL coaching and executives carousel: news and speculation

Former Bears’ OC Dowell Loggains is being hired as Dolphins’ offensive coordinator, per source. Dolphins’ former OC Clyde Christensen likely to remain with team, transitioning to another role.

Report: Cowboys assistant coach could leave for Patriots?
No idea if this is legit but claiming we could be looking to the Cowboys to replace Patricia.
Makes no sense to me I'd rather promote Flo if he doesn't land a head job elsewhere.

Yeah, even if you go to the original source article, there's nothing of substance to back it up, just saying he's possibly leaving and possibly going to the Patriots. Doesn't mean it's not true - he could have sources - but it certainly reads like speculation. Would like to hear from the author to confirm.

He's the Cowboys "passing game coordinator" (I.e. We have too many middle managers in our organization and therefore micromanage to the hilt), so the speculation is for McDaniels and not Patricia.

Getting off the racism "discussion" for a second. Bedard had an interesting take on McDaniels HCing prospects. He was the one guy I thought was surely going, and Patricia, not so much. Bedard had the opposite take. He thinks the Detroit gig will be Patricia's for the asking. However he thins McDaniel might not leave because he risks having a GM he can't work with.

He'd feel comfortable with the Lions, but that gig is likely going to a defensive guy (Patricia), since they want to keep Jim Bob Couter. While the Giants, Colts, and Bears (the 3 jobs McDaniels is in line for) all have GMs in place.

Gettleman is supposedly a good GM with successes in his background. But in the Giants organizational system, the GM runs the show, and while Josh might not need to "run the entire operation" he WILL need to have a real comfort level with the GM. That might not happen in NY.

It was as surprising to be me that Pace was retained as Lewis, but he was. I think that is a deal breaker in Chicago even though the rest of the boxes are ticked off. Talented QB. stable ownersip, great fan base.

Indy is a possibility because Ballard looks like he's doing the right things and he and McDaniels have a history. But the looming shadow of Irsay makes the Colts no sure thing.

I've opined for a while that it would take the perfect job to get McDaniels to uproot his family. None of these are perfect. So perhaps Josh Might not move at all. He could decide to stay and wait for Bill to retire, or if/when the Tennessee job opens up.

If Tennessee gets rocked I think theres a chance Murk still goes.

To me that would be a perfect fit for Josh. You don't get much better from an offensive standpoint & are familiar with Robinson.

Fix that offense. Focus on building a nightmare defense in draft /fa.

I don't think their far off at all.

Passing game coordinator for the defense if you read it they said they thought he would replace maranelli.
Unless they are saying he's gone from defense to offense.

It actually is.

Definition of RACISM
The Rooney rule is clearly discrimination (what's required/accepted for one is not required/accepted for all), and it's based upon race. Therefore, it's the "very definition" of racism.

If you want to argue that said definition should not be applied in the world, I'd be thrilled to hear you argue that in front of the USSC.

I've been with you from the start that it can be argued that the policy is discriminatory. I said from the jump that I am neutral on its use. I do not understand why it continues to be ignored that there is nothing saying a team can't hire whoever they want and that this is an inconvenience, not an edict to hire.

Thanks- you're right of course, but interestingly the original article made the same mistake I did -- saying the job could be appealing if McDaniels left. More reason to question the legitimacy.....

He's probably part of the "minorities can't be racist" crowd.

I am simply pointing out an example where this policy could have a negative effect on someone. You’ll have to show me where I said this particular example would be something to feel sorry about.
If there is some benefit to a person if one race from the Rooney rule that would naturally mean this creates some type of advantage.

I agree that nobody should be told who to interview. But nobody is being told who to hire. You can hire whoever you wish. So, other than the inconvenience of having to interview someone you may not wish to, I just don't think this particular rule as its being applied has these discriminatory effects.

You argued that it wasn't racism, when it is. There's no reason why you shouldn't understand my response to such a claim.

And what you call "an inconvenience" is backed by threat of penalty. Perhaps you don't remember this:

Detroit Lions President Matt Millen was fined $200,000 over hiring Steve Mariucci. NFL commissioner Paul Tagliabue informed Millen of the punishment in a letter, the first fine levied under the league's diversity program. Detroit Lions spokesman Bill Keenist said the Lions "respectfully disagree" with the ruling but supported initiatives to promote diversity on coaching staffs and in front offices.

That's what I was referencing. I agree that the rule is probably pretty useless at this point. There is no minority representation issue in the head coaching ranks. Millen is the only GM dumb enough to have been foiled by the rule though, which shouldn't be surprising. Even then it was a pretty minimal fine. I think our only real disagreement at this point is the idea of whether the policy is discriminatory in theory or practice. I think that it is a bad idea to tell people who to interview, that the rule probably has no real place anymore in the league. At the same time, there is no limit to the amount of candidates a team can interview, they are only required to interview one minority, and they aren't required to hire anyone they do not want to. So, while the rule should g0, it doesn't appear to me to have had any harmful effect on white coaches. That's my thoughts summarized, if it's all good I'd like to wrap this up so we can move back to the usefulness of the thread. I appreciate your posts and wish to get back on topic.

heh..."I'll get Jet coaches!! Yeah...THAT'S the way to beat those cheatriots!"

Chuckie left the game a beaten moron...now he comes back and thinks no one will notice?

He won the Super Bowl and began the rebuilding, but couldn't find a QB he wanted to build around. Still, he managed to get an 11 win season with Chris Simms and Brian Griese as his two QBs, and his last two seasons were 9-7. Since he left, the Bucs have won

Gruden was Lombardi, in comparison to that. It will be interesting to see whether his time away from the game has ruined him as a head coach.

Gruden should bring competition to the af

lol

I would be surprised if he is still Raiders coach in 2 years. People can joke about Del Rio & co all they want but at least those guys have been coaching the last few years. Gruden has done nothing for how long now?

Because he was the voice of MNF people somehow built up this myth of him being an amazing coach.

I'm interested in Gruden to say the least. I'm not a fan of hiring a Gruden or Van Gundy after a decade + away.

That said Oakland isn't far off. More than capable QB. Very talented, very good Oline. Some decent skill weapons you can/replace any time.

On Defense you have a top 10-20 overall player in Mack and a very promising secondary with Joseph, Obi & Conley. All young guys.

I don't think it's impossible to make a legit run with that team very soon.

Was listening to Bert Breer yesterday and he was arguing the reason why Lewis got extended, was not because of the coaching aptitude of Lewis, but more because the head coaching pool is not exactly rife with talent..

Cincinnati chose familiar rather than taking a chance on unproven talent..

So Gruden or even Mike Shanahan aren't upgrades over Lewis?

This is all about control and Mike Brown wants it.

Colts messageboards are saying Nagy and Ballard are incredibly tight and it would take alot for McDaniels to be offered the job over Nagy.
Says same thing Reid said that Nagy is incredibly impressive.
Leaves Giants and Bears possibly Titans if true.
I agree Patricia is gone but we may just get to keep Mcdaniels all speculation at this point but encouraging news none the less.
We would need to have perfect things fall into place.
Schwartz in NYG or Deflippio.
Patricia in Detroit
Arizona Wilks
Murkarey stays in Tenn
Bears Deflippio or Minnestotas OC

Not the worst case scenario for us we keep Flores and promote him and retain McDaniels.
If we go into next season only losing Patricia out of the 3 Caserio Patricia and McDaniels that wouldn't be terrible.
