Every time a minority is being requested to interview for the HC position I get the idea that said franchise doesn't give a **** about said coach and is just satisfying the rooney rule. The rooney rule is totally backwards! What a crock of ****!

If the 32 corrupt owners really gave a **** about diversity they would find a way to enforce the rooney rule at the high school level, at the college level, and at every position level in pro football except the head coach level. We all know the tremendous political power they have to influence things if they want to.

Another thing I start to wonder about the Rooney rule, if it's enforced how it is , there must be a great deal of racists biggots among the corrupt 32.

High schools and colleges across America what to do?

The purpose of the Rooney rule isn’t to force hiring, it’s to effect long range changes by making sure minorities are included in the process and get the opportunity to interview, and be better prepared candidates.

By my count 6/26 hc are African American which is a larger percentage than the population so I’m not sure how this proves owners are bigots.

You would have to arosch it like harbaugh in sf. Get a game manager QB to go with a good running game and D, use your scheme to give him a chance to be ok while you develop your future QB

And RB coach Eric Studesville keeps getting interviews for HC job. Besides being the interim HC after McDaniels got canned, does anyone ever hear his name, or his name being praised? And then every off season he's getting interviews.

When Steve Wilks pops up as a candidate for a whole bunch of teams, after being a DC only one season, my initial reaction was that the teams looked on the list for the top minority DC/OC simply to satisfy the rooney rule. Not that any of the teams really took him seriously. I suppose he's done good things with the Panthers this season?

Wilks is the new hot shot minority that the teams are using to satisfy the rooney rule. Studesville is the default Rooney rule option. Neither has a realistic shot of getting hired.

Ive always meant to research the actual hiring metrics to see if the rule actually yields results. Minority hiring is up no question but is that because of the RR or other social evolutions taking hold

Wow. Total backward looking justification on that poster. Funny.

Why focus on whether the guy is currently the right person to lead the team into the 2018 season and beyond, after all, he was the 2009 coach of the year! Don't you want him around to celebrate that 10 year anniversary in person?

Also, why is the strength of his coaching tree a signal that he should be kept?

I'd be insulted if I were a Bengals fan.

Marvin Lewis isn't a bad HC. He's gotten his team into the playoffs about half the time, while playing in a division that is usually pretty tough. That being said the fact that he is 0-7 in the post season is more than enough reason for him to be put out to pasture.

The Bengals were wallowing in mediocrity which is sometimes worse that just sucking. With him coming back, there is really nothing that would make you believe that things are suddenly after 15 years, going to be better.

Now I understand the thinking that if you let go of Lewis, you have a realistic risk that the guy you hire isn't going to be better, and he could be a lot worse. But at THIS point you have to take that risk, because you know what you have in Lewis, and that is that he is good, but not good enough.

If I were a Bengals fan, I'd be apoplectic now. Because you have just signed up for 2 more years of frustration. You are going to win 7-10 game each season and in a good year be one and done in the playoffs. There is no realistic hope that things are going to get better than that. And if you've had to deal with that for 15 years, that would be tough to swallow. You may have a better team than the Brown, but at least the Browns fans have a hope for a better future (though the bar has been set REALLY low), Bengal fans have no hope for a better future, just more of the same.

Jeff Fisher should put his resume in for the Packers job as a GM. He does a hell of a job putting teams together. Two teams he directly had a role in creating are in the playoffs.

He's kind of like the Altitude Trainer of coaches. While he's there, it's like you're playing at 10,000 feet while everyone else is at sea level. Then when he's gone, you're suddenly playing at sea level and have the stamina of a superhero.

If the NFL actually cared about the diversity (rather than just giving it lip service to look good to the coastal elites) they would scrap the Rooney Rule and replace it with a rule that gave cap exemptions to teams that met minority hiring "goals" (can't call'em quotas, you know). In other words, a team meets the goal and all its player contracts only count against the cap for (say) 95% of what they'd normally count).

I'm not saying I'd want that to happen (I'm against both that and the Rooney Rule), but it would certainly make NFL teams take minority hiring seriously.

Well, that is certainly the rap on Lewis, one that is repeated often enough to make me believe it is true.

But, to me, Lewis' longevity is more about bad ownership that is willing to accept mediocre results. Brown is regarded as one of the worst owners in the League and just doesn't seem to care if the Bungles are any good. He seems content to use the team as a cash cow for himself...not exactly a place where a FA with a lot of talent and hunger for a ring or two is going to want to go. And the kind of place that a Rookie with talent will be happy to escape after four years.

Despite all that, Lewis himself has a 125--112--3 record in 15 years as HC.
His teams have won 10 or more games six times.
He's never won a Playoff Game, but that actually makes for a "bad news, good news" story line: the bad news is that he's 0--7 in the playoffs but the good news is that he takes his teams to the Playoffs nearly half the time (7 out of 15 seasons).

So, yeah, Lewis has made Cincinnati a place where mediocre players, who might not be "highly motivated" but who aren't "terrible" either, can go. A place where they don't have to worry about a lot of rules, can cash a few years worth of nice checks, play golf all winter and retire with a decent pension, health insurance and a few million dollars in the bank.

That's the kind of Coach for whom players might just lay it all on the line in the last game of the season and win a game they're not supposed to win, if they think he's going to lose his job and usher in a new era with a Coach more like Belichick than Santa Claus.
