Wow. Are we really that old? I remember when Dean Pees came to New England with experience as an assistant at Navy. He was splendid taking over for Mangini as DC. Good luck to him in his retirement.

They made that Amazon Prime video special last summer after going to the NFCCG, and then were pumped up as hell out there in AZ.

It’s almost like they just never recovered from our opening season victory with Garoppolo.

It's been my opinion for a while that All or Nothing actually exposed Arians to the rest of the league as an extremely average coach who thinks he's a genius and mostly gets lucky a lot.

True enough, but I never thought of Dean Pees as being around that long that he'd be retiring. He had a long history in college before Belichick hired him as a linebackers coach when RAC left.

Okay, here are two key Pats moments I remember that call for a bit of a longer view: 1) the 1-15 Patriots coached by Rod Rust, and 2) Ben Dreith's call against the Raiders. The Raiders have a special, if not always pleasant place in my Pats memory. 1) The Tuck Rule game, 2) the 1985 playoffs when Craig James ran for over 100 yards to beat the Howie Long Raiders, 3) the 1978 hit by Jack Tatum that paralyzed the late great Darryl Stingley, and 4) the friggin' Ben Dreith phantom roughing the passer call on Ray Hamilton against Ken Stabler.

I'm gonna be one of those rare people who is hoping that one of our coordinators does head towards greener pastures. I feel that its about time we get some fresh faces calling the plays and hopefully bringing a new aspect that perhaps make our offense more explosive, or change up the defensive scheme a bit.

Wouldn't you think McDaniel has built enough goodwill that he can demand a package deal with Nick, maybe the Bears?

I know Belichick is considered the GM, so what does Caserio do on the team? I was always a bit confused his role on the team.

At this point he's the GM in every in every sense exception BB gets final say on the roster. He also coaches on the field and and has a direct line to Josh from the booth on game days.

So his role with the Pats is a lot more than simply running the personnel department. He would be a huge catch for any team.

From your mouth to God's ears. I think that Caserio's value to the Patriots is not fully appreciated by many.

I have always thought that the Patriot front office did a really outstanding job of drafting when one takes into account that, because of their unprecedented record of success, they have worse average draft position than any other team, and that is even before Goodell's loathsome stealing of draft picks.

However, IMHO that is not where the Patriots front office REALLY shines. Being an old timer, I remember the first Super Bowl year when BB seemed to have the golden touch when it came to free agents. Then, not so much, and for a number of years it was more mixed, with strikeouts like the Duane Starks move.

Then, in recent years, starting about 2013 or so, it seemed like the Patriots could do no wrong when it came to their poaching of pro talent from other teams. It was absolutely remarkable, with little or no draft capital every year the Patriots would swoop in and poach other teams lightly regarded players (usually on the last year of their contract) and turn then into solid starters. A few times, those players got extended (Branch, Blount, Lewis, Van Noy). Other times they went on to bigger and better things and the Patriots got Compensatory picks worth about the same as what they originally gave up (Hicks, Ayers, Long, Sheard). I think that there is little question that the Patriots have handled these transactions better than any other team for the last 4 years of so.

At one point I thought it was Michael Lombardi who had the golden touch for these type of poaching of other teams pro players, but he is long gone and the success has largely continued (Ealy was an exception), so I can only conclude that the reason for this success is the maturation of Caserio, I think Caserio has become the best in the league at these type of pro (as opposed to college) player evaluations. I think Caserio is more important to the Pats than anyone except BB and TB, I hope we can keep him and have him eventually assume full control.

IMO Belichick will try to stick around to pass Don Shula's all-time wins record.

A win today would make 276 wins leaving him 71 wins behind Shula's 347.

So he gets to work with his 2 sons for another 6 to 7 years, retire at age 71 or 72 and stick it to a guy he dislikes.
