Onside kick -- what was the plan?

Think it was a set up for a future game that actually matters. There is now some film on the “dribbler” approach. It would make sense if they line up the same way next time and Gost tries to drill it right into the front line

That would suggest that they were setting up a play for a future game and not trying to win this one, and I have a hard time believing that.

There was nothing wrong with the play. Onside kicks are very low percentage plays and this seemed as good as any. I just think one of the benefits of this particular play is that it sets up future plays in more significant games. And I have a hard time believing that Belichick doesn’t understand that some games Are more important than others.

No doubt. I’m just not sure if your suggestion is that he was setting this up for a later date or not, because You’ve alluded to it by saying that as well as that “some games are more important than others.” If that’s the case, it sounds like the insinuation is that Belichick conceded the Miami game, where any onside kick brings a roughly 1/7 chance of winning.

Maybe you’re stating that he was trying to win both on Monday AND setting things up for later. That could be a possibility.

He plays to win, but if he had a play that was 5% better to use in this essentially meaningless game, but this play would increase the odds of a successful onside kick by 25% in a later, meaningful game, to me he would probably factor that in in his decision.

IMO that play was doomed from the first touch. No Ghosts fault per se, but like everything else that day, The play fell flat and the unit just didn't execute as they needed.

I think the road trip, thoughts of the Pit game, a stadium they aren't comfortable playing in, a natl tv game against an overlooked team psyched to showcase for a in-season "superbowl" game of any meaning, and out for some recent revenge payback against div rival, just spelled trouble for NE. NE was flat, MIA was highly motivated.

The plan? Most likely to recover the ball and gain another offensive possession.

After 47 posts still no evidence offered as to why they chose this type of onside kick, cannot imagine it being effective unless it is kicked hard right at the opposing team, anticipating some sort of ricochet.. even that is difficult to imagine.

What do you expect ? That someone figures out an onside kick strategy based on a sample of one that was a failure ?

We dont even know if Ghost wanted to kick it that way or if he just hit it completely wrong.

Just an observation, no need to get upset... thought with all these football minds someone may have offered some clarity.. we do know it was set up as an onside kick and he kicked it softly.. it was poorly executed.

Am not upset but it is just one of those situations where it is impossible to extrapolate what was supposed to happen.

Am just hesitant to call out coaching because for all we know they might have had an idea that (if executed properly) would have increased changes to recover significantly. Or maybe it really was just all garbage.
