Patriots cut DE Kony Ealy [update: claimed off waivers by Jets]

They moved out of the second round to get this guy, and it sounds by all accounts that Carolina was glad to be rid of him. First Cooper and now Ealy, that's a couple of big swings and misses.

BTW Cooper is now the starting guard in Dallas, BB didn't even try to recoup anything for either one of them.
It's not a big swing and miss when they barely give up anything.

It's called a flyer

BB sucks. What a fkkn loser.

I predict if Ealy gets picked up by another team he does nothing noteworthy for his new team.

If playing for a new contract next year couldn't get him to listen, then he doesn't seem like a candidate to learn from his experiences yet.

It seems to me that there may be a couple NFL teams for whom Ealy could immediately become one of their top pass-rushers.
Rivera said something along the lines of, " he will be good if he listens to the coaches" after they traded him. He missed the first day or two of camp and then made a somewhat odd comment when asked why, "him and Bill had a thing" or something. If I had to guess I would say he wanted to one thing and they wanted him to do another and from the looks of it he wasn't great at either.

Bill Belichick Conference Call 8/26

After answering a couple of questions about Julien, BB answers a couple about Ealy in a way that seems pretty respectful of Ealy's effort.

Not going to lie I was somewhat excited when we swung that trade. It was a low risk relatively high reward type move. Ended up being a bigger risk to cut him after Nink retired which makes his failure he more disappointing.

I have to guess that Nink's retirement wasn't a complete surprise to the Pats. Picking up Ealy in addition to Rivers (as kind of a two-fer) might even have been influenced by foreknowledge of Nink's thinking.

BB also lost Rivers to injury before cutting Ealy. However, the emergence of Wise, then Langi, then Adam Butler - perhaps even Harris showing that he can run the D from the middle (thus allowing HT more time on the outside) - may all have made cutting Ealy easier.

Done nothing since 2012, bad trade.

That's 9

ADD FIVE
3 DT's: Branch, Brown and Valentine
2 MLB's : Harris, Freeny

Basically, the is all the questionable players left from camp, except for Roberts, who awaits one more announcement.

Well my Pats picker is still intact. Ealy was umimpressive at camp and showed nothing in pre-season except against 2nd stringers or rookies. My guess is that we haven't seen the starting DE in a Patriots uniform yet. Lots of cuts coming in the next ten days.

Well, he made a play now and again, and he had some physical skills, but he was lazy and stupid. Not our kind of guy. Good riddance. I suppose it was worth a try, but it turned out to be Haynesworth lite.

Why Am I not surprised. I always thought writing was on BB's wall.

I think Roberts makes the team over freeny

Or that they really wanted Rivers.

If that was the case they would've taken rivers at 72 instead of trading down and risking the chance of losing him. Plus wasn't there a story that we decided to move out from 72 when San Diego took feeney?

I suspect...
1) mediocre level of effort
2) attitude issues that BB felt would affect young players

As I said elsewhere, if BB cut Collins for something like those issues Ealy would be GONE

I watched his play last night. Was rooting for him but Meh was the best rating I gave.

Meaning they should have known better. You'd think based on film etc they could have figured it just wasn't going to work. That's the hit and miss.

Nah, not really a biggie. NOBODY gets them all right. Sometimes you take a calculated risk, and this one didn't cost too much to really worry about. Low risk, potentially high reward move that didn't work out.

It happens to everyone, including BB.
