It's 1988-1989(?)

I was walking down Newbury Street one Saturday afternoon. Along comes Marvin Hagler with two of his friends. Hagler has on early 80s type short shorts, long white socks with the 2 stripes up to his knees, hi-tops. He is carrying a gigantic boombox on his shoulder.

I say to him, "Hey, Marvelous, who is going to win tonight, Hit Man or Sugar Ray?"

He turns around and says, "I don't know, and I don't care!!!"

I also once saw Marvin Hagler, jogging with hoodie & sweats, along Tremont Street near the Parker House hotel, in the fall of 1987. He had lost to Ray Leonard the previous April, so I had hoped that maybe a rematch was in the offing. Sadly, that chickenshit Leonard retired, again.

Everyone knows he beat Leonard. That decision was a total sham. That was the Golden Age of boxing, with a bunch of the all-time greatest boxers all fighting each other- Marvin,Sugar Ray,Hearns. A few years earlier Duran was still a beast. Those were real fighters. Those top 3 all would've destroyed Mayweather. Like Floyd they all were highly skilled technicians but unlike Floyd, all 3 could knock you out.

Hagler and Mayweather in their primes....toe to toe.

Don't sleep on Roy Jones Jr

Epic

No way. Mayweather would never last. He's got no punching power. And Marvin was a very smart fighter who would eventually cut the ring down and knock out Mayweather. Not easy to do as Floyd is an all time great defensive boxer- but has no offense. He's great today, but he's not even close to Marvin Ray and hearns- they were complete, could beat you many ways.

Roy was awesome. Fought in a different weight class than the big 3, but he was also a great one. Sad to see the state of boxing today.

I saw Hagler-Hearns on closed-circuit TV at the Orpheum Theatre in Boston.
The place was absolutely packed (at least on the ground level), and although
it was only April, it was still hot inside. That was likely the best 8 minutes in
Middleweight history.

I also saw Hagler-Leonard on CCTV 2 years later at the Worcester Centrum.
I had a bad feeling about the fight the longer it lasted, because the Petronellis
were not emphasizing to Marvin about the importance of not allowing Leonard
to steal the early rounds. Damn shame, because Leonard couldn't have hurt even
me with any of the punches he threw that night.

Sugar Ray is my favorite all time boxer. In his prime, no one punched faster and harder pound for pound

You gents should check out the book 4 kings by George Kimball.
Great read

I wasn't a big boxing fan, but there were a couple beside those previously mentioned who impressed me.

One was a guy named Carlos Zarate, who had an incredible record of KO's in the 70's.

The other boxer was the Cuban Olympic boxer, Teofilo Stevenson, though he probably didn't fight many great fighters as an amateur.

Both of those guys really packed a punch.

I'm way too old and didn't track boxing since I was really young, but I remember the Foreman/Ali/Frazier troika in their primes... I guess probably the same "you can't compare across eras" thing applies in boxing, but that was an amazing time. (RIP to Ali... in his youth he pretty much said "I'll beat em up but I won't kill em," and I'm pretty sure did jail time for that... and my understanding was that his whole life was about doing for others. Yeah I made my D-Con Foregone commercial jokes in my time... but whatever he had to struggle with, as I understand it, his love for others shone through until the day he died... then he planned his funeral to bring people together too)

RIP Ali
