2017 Training Camp - Day 2 (7/28/17)

If Carr looks like he could be another Edelman, and you are only keeping 5 WRs, tell me what do you do?

It's hard to believe in 2009 the staff could have looked at JE11 and thought "we really need to keep this kid on the roster. After four seasons of hardly being on the offense, he'll turn into our #1, 100 reception guy."

As stated. its not how he looks, its how he will perform under the brightest lights in the most important situations. Time and Time again DA has come though over and over with crucial plays during the highest stakes. You cant teach that, you cant SHOW that in camp.

Its ice in the veins. DA has lived up to number 80 IMO. And he is done it about as unselfishly as possible (pay cuts)

I cant think of anything more complimentary to DA then to compare him to Troy Brown who is think its the best all around football player the patriots ever had and certainly up there in clutchness.

Bob Kraft is rich.

Can we buy a couple more roster spots?

:p

Quick thoughts

Even though i feel set at WR you can't ignore what Carr is doing. Needs to be monitored. Also we must remember there is always room for a guy who shows enough promise.

Moore is really being competitive and making plays more than not. It would be unfortunate to let one of the Jones go but if they kept a promising butler with a loaded CB core in 2014 I have no doubt if Moore keeps this up they will not risk losing a talented CB.

Gilmore really showed up today. I think he is one of the keys to the season. Ryan was unfairly flamed on this board the last 2 years when overall he played well and I was happy with his play as the #2 CB. Gilmore can be a different animal all together.

JG has thrown some Ints but I am not worried. I am sure he is just pushing it and taking risk right now he wouldn't in a real game. For a young QB in particular I think it is better to ride that edge in practice. He has yet to throw an int in 94 NFL passes. I think that speaks for his ability to protect the ball. Not that he never will but he knows how to manage it well when the lights come on.

Cyrus didn't muff anything today. I am sure I would have heard if he did. So there is that. Obviously doing it on the first punt on training camp was bad but lets just reset and see what happens.

Brady and Cooks look in sync. I expected it but it looks that way. Nothing else needs to be said as you know what the rest means.

I think Jonathan Jones had a subpar day. Worth mentioning. I doubt he is in jeopardy due to his STs but it is worth mentioning.

Speaking of CBs. Rowe with a good training camp so far. Can't forget him.

Oh the whole I am happy with what I am seeing. Good competition both ways.

The Ninko retirement talk is gaining traction. I'm hearing it now on the radio. Oh boy. Depth and production was already a concern . . .

Now THIS is what I wanted to see from Gilmore. I am loving this. If he can give Brady/Cooks a hard time he can stick with pretty much any QB/WR combo. If Gilmore comes here and plays up to his contract.... Well that is it. Game over NFL.
I hear you, Digital. I am still taking a more tempered approach with him because he's always been able to flash elite ability. What his problem has been, and what I've heard reported a bit so far in Spring and so far in TC, is that he has shown some inconsistency. I'll chalk that up to being on a new team and still getting acclimated. But as you've said, THIS is also I want to see more of from him. He got a big payday and I doubt BB would have done that unless he saw something on tape or believes he can bring out the remaining potential in Gilmore's game.

Hearing that Rowe is having a good camp so far makes me giddy. Some say he was the best defender on the field today. I like him and he has decent size. He seems to be a good kid with a lot of confidence. He played well in stretches last season, and I was impressed with him in the playoffs. I'm encouraged about this secondary. It's the front seven that bears watching in passing situations. We'll know more when the pads come on . . . likely as soon as tomorrow.

Hearing what exactly? Speculation about it or that it's actually happening?

Because he's talked at length about this a while ago saying how good he felt. I really think next year is the year to think about him going.
He even said he wouldn't play for another team. So color me skeptical until I hear something tangible or concrete.

There's been nothing specific in terms of why he's been out, but the speculation that he could be mulling retirement was being talked about again on 98.5. I know it's all speculation, so I'm by no means saying this is what I believe will happen. However, some in the media have a growing concern that this could be what is keeping him away so far.

All I do know is what he said on the radio last week (or might have been the week before), which is that he'll retire if the Pats don't want him anymore. That obviously could have no bearing on this season or why he hasn't been present.

I just heard that there was a bit of a scuffle or something between Cy. Jones and Hogan, as Jones continued to try to punch the ball away from Hogan long after the play was whistled. Apparently, BB didn't like it and said something to Jones that was considered a slight scolding. Interesting.

Remember the saying (was it BB?) - "if you are thinking about retirement, you already have".
