Schefter: WAS should trade Cousins now

when you franchise someone, by definition you are paying him top-level money (average of the top 5 salaries for the position).
.

Yeah I was thinking just see how he performs this year and maybe work out a long term deal. But I didn't know that his salary would sky rocket to 34m.

I know the franchise tag is expensive in general but its only a 1 year deal.

Nope. That one was on Brady. Broken coverage on Gronk, inexplicably. He had him open and just didn't see him. Yes the poor o-line performance that game played a role because Brady was not as patient and calm as he otherwise would have been but he had enough time to make the play, despite pressure by the d-line on the conversion.

I love Brady but I dislike Brady apologists. In this case, a photo says it all. The defender is 4-5 yards away from Brady as Gronk breaks wide-open.

Yes, a photo says it all. There are a couple things wrong with your assumption..

First, there is a LB spying Brady directly behind a receiver at the goal line. On those sorts of passes, Brady rarely lobs it up. It's more of a shallow arc. Very easy for someone to get to it.. Particularly when they're in the direct path.

Secondly, since you mention the defender that is "4-5 yards away from Brady". Look closer. That defender has already broken on Brady. Linebackers cover that space in under 1.5 seconds with ease. What's the likelihood that Brady can actually plant and throw in that time since he's on the run.

As an aside, I only count 10 white shirts on that play..

The chance that Dan Snyder and his disfunctional staff will find a QB better than Cousins is less than the probability of the Omissioner confessing that Deflategate was a frame up. Pay the man.

They are paying Cousins over $24M this year. For a mediocre QB. It's not like they're asking Cousins to take a cut or anything.

And the idea that Cousins should be unhappy with an addition $29M in guaranteed money is just a joke.. (that's a general comment).

This is exactly why they shouldn't waste their time with Cousins. Second tier. There is first place and then there is F-all. Who cares about "good" ? I would want championships.

What is wrong with second tier? 2/3 of the teams in the NFL would want Cousins.

As long as the team has a strong D and excellent skill players, Cousins can win a SB for a team.

It is my belief that Washington could only win with Cousins if his skill was in a vacuum and he was cheap. The reality : his salary will take away from the "strong D and excellent skill players" you speak of.

Cousins would win with the 2000 Ravens or 85 Bears D combined with the 2007/2008 Patriots O. But, since he is going to keep getting paid like a superstar, he needs to be a superstar for that team to win.

LOL, Cousins just passed for nearly 5,000 yards. I think you're reaching a bit by calling him "mediocre". The Foreskins could certainly do a lot worse than Cousins at the quarterback position.

Washington has only one real option : Trade and Tank

How else can they end this hijacking? The team doesn't believe in the player / the player's salary cripples the team's roster building / the player will likely exit next year any way / the distraction has led to disfunction.

Tank for the 2018 draft....their QB future may be available if enough losses can be achieved. Race the Jets to the bottom.

The alternative: Sign Cousins to an exorbitant deal and take up residence in the middle of the pack for a half dozen years.

Be bold

I thought the OP was gonna suggest the Pats trade for Cousins. Glad to be wrong.

Cousins holds all the cards. Clearly he is a good to great NFL QB. Furthermore, they have nobody to take his place.
Cousins is definitely not a "good to great" quarterback. More like "average to good"

I don't get the emphasis on "Redskins". Why are posters repeating Redskins when their name is the Redskins?
Because many people are flippant about blatantly racist sports teams' names. And, for some reason, many feel the need to fight as much as they need to in order to keep those names.

In Washington's last six games, they went 2-4. Losses include ARI, CAR. They split vs PHI & NYG but lost both to DAL last season.

It's not all on Cousins (though all those INTs week 17 don't help). But to suggest "throwing for almost 5000 yards" in this era's NFL is enough to call him even "very good" is a bit much. Using only passing yards as a metric, Brady in 2001 was subpar... The biggest difference : Brady lead his team when the pressure was on. Cousins has, until now, done nothing but fold in tough spots.

I think that Schefter is right about what the Redskins should do here. The Redskins have screwed the pooch with this Cousins contract. It was ridiculous when the Redskins couldn't get him signed last off-season. And even then, there was a feeling that the Redskins were never going to be able to sign him. The Redskins should have moved on from him last year! The Redskins franchising him again this year, was just plain stupid of the Redskins. He obviously doesn't want to play for the Redskins, and its not like he is a great QB for the Redskins. He has enough talent to help the Redskins get into the playoffs. But he is not worth the 50 Million dollars that the Redskins are going to end up paying him for the last two years!
I'm in DC now, and I saw Cousins on the local news last night and he has had enough of the Redskins. I'm sure that he is laughing all the way to the bank on the money that the Redskins are paying him, but it is clear, he doesn't want to play for the Redskins.

Now, I have no idea who the Redskins would trade with, who is going to fork over any real compensation to the Redskins for a non-elite twice franchised QB, that the is prohibited from signing a long term deal until after this season.

No one is going to trade anything to get Cousins' contract.

It may take a deal like the Texans did with Osweiler; trade a pick along with Cousins to entice another team to take him.

Problem is that he is not terrible like Osweiler, just his contract is.

A textbook example of "you can't fix stupid".

I agree. He hasn't shown anything that warrants all the attention he seems to be getting, but he is not a bad QB. He is, as you've stated, second tier and maybe even lower second tier.

yeah, no. Cousins is a top 10 QB. The last 2 years combined he has 9,000 yards passing and scored 63 TD

Cousins is a lot like Brees in San Diego. Puts up very good numbers and is on the verge of blowing up. Any team looking for a QB should be all in on him

The Ringer's Tate Frazier theorized that Captain Kirk will keep getting tagged until he can buy the Redskins.

I'll just make one comment on this then I'll drop it in hopes that it doesn't derail a thread for 475839294758th time. 9 in 10 Native Americans polled didn't find the name offensive. Further, the various tribes didn't seem to have much of a problem accepting millions of dollars from the team, either. They were also allowed to keep their name via court ruling. Perhaps it's time for perpetually offended and needlessly guilty white people to drop the assault on speech.

I think that Schefter is right about what the Redskins should do here.

That's the Difference between Reporting...and Analysis.

Schefter is a magnifcent Reporter.

But as an Analyst? Meh.

Absolutes are usually wrong.

Context matters.

A lot.

Whether or not Washington should trade ~ or try to trade ~ Cousins depends on The Market for'm...And The Market, as Schefter should but evidently doesn't understand, is dramatically deflated by Cousins's blatantly obvious Desire to abandon Washington...and reunite with Coach Callahan II.

Washington is a Dumpster Fire.

Cousins'd'ave to be out'f'is Mind to do anything but force their Hand.

And that's exactly what he's doing.

This is a Paul George Situation.

Or Fred Lynn, if you will.

Pennies on the Dollar.

so where's the outrage for team monikers that are racist against white cultures?

Fighting Irish with a mascot of an angry leprechaun in a fighting stance isnt racist against the Irish?

Vikings and selling helmets complete with blonde hair attached and using a viking horn isnt the same as someone wearing black face?

the Canucks literally using a derogatory term for Canadians isnt racist?

oh, thats right...its because those groups of people aren't a bunch of whiny babies looking to be offended.
