Cyrus Jones still struggling on returns

Media are making articles about Thursday OTA 3 days later? That's just weak!

To be fair, neither the post by minitron nor the post by tune scribe deserved a "dislike". Both you guys made solid observations and are good contributors to this site.
I remember Cannon getting crucified on this board in 2015 and most of the posters thought he would never amount to anything. As bad as Cannon was in 2015 (and he was indeed putrid), he was superb in 2016. Jones has just as much a chance to do the same as he played as bad in 2016 as Cannon did in 2015.
Your right i overreacted and my response to @Tunescribe was a little harsh. I'm just sick and tired to see loads of threads calling out young players of the favorite football team because they haven't contibuted in a way some of us have liked. Would i have liked to see Cyrus take some punts to the house and have an impact with som INT's? Sure. But i don't lynch players if they don't. Especially after their first season in the league. All of these players lay their health and careers on the line on every play just for our entertainment. Some have their bodies destroyed by 30. I know that they chose to go this path but they also deserve some credit.

This is exactly why I can't abide Florio.

When he was just a gossip-monger with his nose in the trashcans he had a function in passing on stories that had no corroboration but sometimes turned out to be true.

Now he's kidding himself that he's a football authority. He takes a three-day old story second-hand from a New England journalist -- someone had difficulty fielding punts in the wind and the rain at the first OTAs of the off-season -- and gives his expert take on how the Patriots should best handle the problem.

I bet BB is overwhelmed with gratitude!

Please list all sophomore 1st, 2nd and 3rd round draft choice that were cut by Belichick?
Good point, but jones breaks precedent in how horrific he is. Talented team, no room for someone as hopeless as he.

How has he been performing at CB?
Hard to get a feel for corner play in OTAs. We'll know a lot more about that when they put on the pads in TC.

Akeem Akbar was a 3rd rounder and did not make the 2001 roster.

Terrance Wheatley, Shaun Crable, Kevin O'Connell were drafted in 2008 and all cut within 3 years.

Dominique Easley did not make it to his third camp.

Not ready to call Jones a bust yet, but he's on the radar.

It used to be that Bill would at least wait until making his first pick before the busts started coming; 2 bad first picks in the past 3 years now tell a different tale.

  • He was **** as a returner
  • He was **** as a corner
  • This team is stacked, and scholarship positions will be few, if any
  • If he doesn't significantly up his game, he could very well end up in the unemployment line.

Akeem Akbar is not a former Pats player.

Hakim Akbar, was a 5th round pick.

Wheatley was cut due to his inability to get on the field due to injuries as much as anything. Easley had his much discussed issues with injury and then the personality issues. Crable, like Wheatley, ended up on IR his first two years in the league and then was cut after flunking a physical (re-signed when healthy and then subsequently cut again)

O'Connell is a good example. But the rest of your examples are either fictional or not really applicable to Cyrus Jones.

The chances of a healthy 2nd round pick getting cut in camp, when there is little-to-no proven long term depth options blocking him being at least the #4 CB, are pretty slim. Butler is unsigned beyond 2017, Rowe is a totally different style player and Jonathan Jones (who people dump on far less than Cyrus Jones) barely saw the field on D.

Pats fans love to dump on rookies who struggle early or who were "bad" draft picks. When they pan out (like Harmon or Ryan), it's "well good for him, but they could have had him 3 rounds later" and if they flop it's "BB sux at drafting! Another bum DB/WR/etc"

I have no idea what, if anything, Cyrus Jones will contribute next year. But writing him off is laughable and assuming he is likely to be cut is questionable at best given the past 17 years of watching BB roster build.

Wouldn't be surprised if they cut him. Yet another db high round bust. Sad.

BB has consistently missed on DBs high in the draft. Besides WR, this is our weakest draft strength.

Here are all of BB's defensive back picks in Rd 1 and Rd 2 over last 17 years:

BUST = Ras-I-Downling (2010 Rd 2), Darius Butler (2009 Rd 2), Terrence Wheatley (2008 Rd 2), Tavon Wilson (2012 Rd 2), Jordan Richards (2015 Rd 2), and probably Cyrus Jones (2016 Rd 2)

JAG = Eugene Wilson (2003 Rd 2)

DECENT = Brandon Merriweather (2007 Rd 1), Pat Chung (2009 Rd 2)

ELITE = Devin McCourty (2010 Rd 1)

FWIW, Cannon was quite good in 2013 after replacing an injured Vollmer. IMO, it is not coincidence that the two seasons he struggled were with Googs as his positional coach.

There have been lots and lots worse that played a second year. I'll start Bequette. Other poster can add many more.

It may convenient to call Darius Butler a bust. It may be more accurate to say that the team failed to develop him or use him well. I think he's playing. He played pretty well in the last couple of seasons.

Yeah I thought about moving Butler to JAG, and I wouldn't really quibble with that. But he was a 2nd round pick that was with us for only 2 years, so calling him a bust isn't inaccurate either.

But let's not quibble. The point remains. Our high draft picks on defensive backs in last decade or so have mostly been wasted.

Well stated post. That's why I said earlier you are a good contributor to this site. I enjoy reading your posts, as well as minitron. This is a great site...

I believe Cy. Jones will have EVERY opportunity to succeed before it's all said and done in NE. That's the way BB coaches. He gives you the opportunity to earn your playing time. If Jones fails, it will be because he legitimately cannot handle the game the pro stage.
