TE Michael Williams released

He was one of my bubble guys, but thought he was versatile and he might stick.....

Could see him catching on with the Giants or someone before camp. Good blocker, if nothing else.

Was really a guy without a position. Too light to play tackle, but big for TE.

Liked the intrigue of maybe using his size as a way to make him a versatile, multi position blocker. Too bad that it appears he's done here. Then again wouldn't be shocked if he's back.

Liked the guy, but can't say I'm surprised. Seemed like there were too many TEs fighting for one spot.

I'm not sure if I'd call anyone too big to play TE, but he was nothing more than a blocking end.

With Gronk, Allen, and O'Shaughnessy all being pretty good blockers, there just didn't seem to be room for him. Like you said, maybe he returns as camp fodder.

I doubt that this was about being squeezed out by better players so much as a determination that his injury wasn't healed enough for him to play to his full potential. Good luck to him!

He was a perfectly decent receiver at Alabama before he bulked up when Detroit tried to turn him into an OT, but Brady really never threw to him. He must not have had that ability to reliably be where Brady wanted him that is required to get Brady's trust. Or, maybe he just could run fast enough at that weight.

Pats have lots of depth at almost all positions, except maybe LB.....

Wonder how many Patriot cuts end up on other rosters....

Same S...Different year !!

We almost always play 2 LB's, with Ninkovich as our 3rd when we play 3. Those 2 are Hightower and Van Noy (should be even better with a year in the system).

I don't how many additional we'll carry. We have the following:

COMPETING FOR BACKUP LINEBACKER POSITIONS
McClellan (liked by Belichick, disliked on this board)
Freeny, a starter back from injuries (liked by Belichick, disliked on this board)
Roberts, a starter for some of his rookie year (should be better this year)
Rivers, a good looking rookie
Bates, a potential backup with some experience
Langi, our best looking UDFA

IMHO, to indicate that we don't have depth at LB is a bit misleading.

I think there may have been some redundancy at the blocking TE position, particularly with the addition of O'Shaughnessy, but you very well may be correct that his injury played a part in the move.

If Williams were fully healthy and back to his prior ability level, I think that he would have been given a chance to compete in camp.

I thought he had played some OL and at FB for some reason....being able to fill in for spot duty at a position other than your main duty to me is versatility........not all players are starting OL, TE, and FB.....heck...I even considered Troy Brown as versatile as he played some emergency CB duty at one time....

You have listed 2 players you don't like , a rookie , a UDFA with no NFL experience and someone with potential........

When I mention backups, maybe I should qualify it......someone who is proven and can step in for a starter without a significant drop off......The only ones in that group that I actually like are Roberts.....McClellan.... but sure would feel a lot better with an experienced vet back there....

I apologize. I'll fix.
When, I said "disliked here", I meant on this board. Personally, I'm fine with McClellan at LB and Freeny as LB/ST.
