The 2017 Mock Draft Thread

Let's infuse some real draft insight to the mock draft thread..

Here a great listen from Lombardi sharing background draft room stories:

Lot's of great stuff from the best NFL storyteller . take your 30 and enjoy

From the unbearable lightness of taking players on measurables (esp 40y) to influence of mocks on drafting process and smoke/recycling info strategies (teams don't wanna give out new names that they're really high on) .. but mostly great stories on past war room experiences and picks including Patriots.

Don't wanna spoil it so just a few teasers:
- the best time to draft a QB is when you have a QB
- BB is better in trading down than anyone bc he realizes there's no great player in the draft; he's not getting married to any of the prospects . he knows he's gonna get one of the several that are all about the same
- about NE visits incl. a story of bringing Garoppolo and Manziel for visit on the same day
- there's even Dion Dawkins segment for our Captain
- last but not least: what NE does good is defining what they want in the player and then searching that out; teams like CLE are just looking for players - that's when you make the most mistakes
__

just a thought on that last one: one would expect that Cleveland would be the team to apply the BB approach of drafting in FA - exchanging picks for proven players. With so many picks adding to so inexperienced team its not just hard on them to create an actual team (like Joe Thomas is saying for two years now) but also makes it inevitable that they are doing a lot of work for other teams (selecting and coaching loads of young players that will mostly go elsewhere in their prime). Unbelievably shortsighted..

I like these players a lot, and I'd be very happy if that's how the draft turned out, but I HIGHLY doubt that King makes it to 72, let alone 96, given the questions surrounding the other corners in this draft. King seems like a first round lock at this point.

My last Patriots mock. Hard to predict what other teams do and who drops but..

72) Tim Williams - OLB - LB is a big need. We have to have someone who is decent next to Hightower. Williams might not be here but I think with so many CBs and more QBs going in the top 64 than were projected and edge players he is there.

96) Carl Lawson - De - He shouldn't be here at this point but someone will fall. This is the value spot in this draft and a great pick where they can get a lot of value.

131) Corn Elder - CB - It would be a pity to not pick a CB in this draft. This is a new binky of mine. Reminds me a bit of Butler due to his scrappy nature and hard hitting.

183) Michael Roberts - TE - I think he can be a great role player. Ready to block in the NFL day one and a very underrated pass catcher who is a big time red zone threat.

200) Keinota Davis - DE - I honestly don't know much about these prospects when it gets this low but seems interesting.

239) IDK. Impossible to guess.

For #239 ...
....look at the 3Sigma lists for DBs
... look for names in the top 20 on those lists that you've never heard of
... look for names on the list of Pats pre-draft contacts who are likely UDFA

When you find a match - BINGO! - there's your #239!

Oh, wow! Same thing happened to me!

I was, like, 5oth among OGs! Of course, I'm 5015/188, but still .... !!

Some takeaways from Mayock's top 100 list:
Mike Mayock's 2017 NFL Draft top 100 prospect rankings

- Glad to finally see someone taking DeMarcus Walker (#44) seriously. Id love to see him falling to the Pats but I prefer to respect the reality of that most probably not happening..
- Same with Willis (#37), Basham (#51), Anderson (#52), also Tomlinson (#47) - Id love at least one of them to fall to #72 - but I am glad somebody is finally saying this guys are simply better prospects than Lawson, Bowser, McDowell, Hall..
- Surprised to see Takk at #19 and Taco only at #49 - interesting
- @LB he is surprisingly high on Anzalone (#60) while sliding Cunningham (#59) and McMillan (#72) close to Pats territory.
- Unfortunately he's also very high on Kittle. I suspect he kept himself busy reading this board..
-- He surprisingly snubbed Lawson, Montravious Adams, Rasoul Douglas, Butt, Hodges .. also no Jaleel Johnson, Elder, Howard Wilson, Peterman, Roderick Johnson, Davenport, Holden, Asiata, Zay Jones, Chad Hansen, Isiah Ford, Darboh, Donta Foreman, Wayne Gallman (while having guys like Sprinkle, Pumphrey, Eleumunor, Blair Brown)
__

Going with his board .. #72 for Pats could be between
McMillan / Desmond King (in Ryan/Chung capacity) / Garcia / Dorian Johnson / Rivers / Tabor

and #96 possibly
Josh Jones / Ogunjobi / Beckwith

not exactly what we'd hoped for..

This could be my favorite mock to date. Love these players. Great job!

Agreed. Was surprised to find Gerald Everett in round six, and not sure how they had Skai Moore as the best player available when we pick in the 5th? I thought he was returning to college after neck surgery kept him out all year.

The last time Bill Belichick didn’t make any trades during the draft was in 2004. He’s traded up 18 times in his 17 drafts with New England, and traded down 19 times.

There is a lot of late chatter that Trubisky will go #1.

Surely Cleveland can't screw this up. Even if they love Trubisky, there is no reason they can't get Garrett at #1 and use some of their excess picks to move up from #12 (likely to #5).

If they pick Trubisky at 1 then they are complete and utter imbeciles. Like you said they can pick Garrett and still get Trubisky, but they can't pick Trubisky at one and then get Garrett.

To be fair to the front office, according to Bob Mcginn who had Trubisky going #1, he suggests that it would be an owners decision. I suspect the FO and coaches are in on Garrett. But you're right. Both the e9ers and Titans have signalled that they want to trade down. Just take them up on it.

I agree, but it could lead to a mutiny inside the organisation. How can you be a GM of a team that constantly gets overruled by an inept owner. If Trubisky does go #1 it is going to have major ramifications beyond just the draft.

And you're realizing this just now?

Please review the last time the Browns had double-digit draft picks including multiple 1st-rounders (hint: their "big score" was Manziel).
