Let's infuse some real draft insight to the mock draft thread..
Here a great listen from Lombardi sharing background draft room stories:
Lot's of great stuff from the best NFL storyteller . take your 30 and enjoy
From the unbearable lightness of taking players on measurables (esp 40y) to influence of mocks on drafting process and smoke/recycling info strategies (teams don't wanna give out new names that they're really high on) .. but mostly great stories on past war room experiences and picks including Patriots.
Don't wanna spoil it so just a few teasers:
- the best time to draft a QB is when you have a QB
- BB is better in trading down than anyone bc he realizes there's no great player in the draft; he's not getting married to any of the prospects . he knows he's gonna get one of the several that are all about the same
- about NE visits incl. a story of bringing Garoppolo and Manziel for visit on the same day
- there's even Dion Dawkins segment for our Captain
- last but not least: what NE does good is defining what they want in the player and then searching that out; teams like CLE are just looking for players - that's when you make the most mistakes
__
just a thought on that last one: one would expect that Cleveland would be the team to apply the BB approach of drafting in FA - exchanging picks for proven players. With so many picks adding to so inexperienced team its not just hard on them to create an actual team (like Joe Thomas is saying for two years now) but also makes it inevitable that they are doing a lot of work for other teams (selecting and coaching loads of young players that will mostly go elsewhere in their prime). Unbelievably shortsighted..
