Todd Heap Tragedy

Yup. Saw it on the local news. Still, how the hell does that even happen?

Such a tragedy.

Terrible tragedy. My thoughts and best wishes to him and his family

Had this happen in my neighborhood to a family we knew when I was a kid. Father nearly lost his mind.

As a parent, I cannot even begin to imagine the grief of losing a child.

May the Angels of His Mercy bring solace to all the family and their friends this day, and all the days to come, and may her memory be a blessing.

I drive truck and always get nervous backing up, as there are blind spots.. cannot imagine myself being in a situation such as this, what would you say???

My riders sometimes get upset when I park far away from a destination so I can get a "pull through" spot to avoid backing up..

It's one of those beyond awful things that happen and the details, while important from an investigation standpoint, I kinda don't want to know.

I can't even imagine how he is going to get through the rest of his life after this.

How about installing a backup camera? Now that I have kids, I can't live without one. Just too paranoid that the same thing could happen to me.

Even with a backup camera there are blind spots. I don't like backing up either. Only time I ever hit a vehicle was in reversing, I was looking out my driver's side mirror and the vehicle was offset to my right. It was a shorter vehicle and I was driving a big ole SUV. Never had a chance to see it.

Based on what I read, it seemed like he was going forward.

Someone had this happen in my hometown growing up to a little kid as well. Not sure how Heap gets passed this, he probably doesn't sadly. What a horrific tragedy.

I didnt read the details about the accident but hitting kids taking the car out of the garage backwards unfortunately is not something so uncommon, I've heard and know people who had accidents like this.

You cant stop watching kids for a second, pool, power sockets, oven, tools, you get distracted for a second and some serious **** can happen.

What a horrible tragedy. Prayers are with the family.

Prayers for him and his family.

This is my greatest fear every time I back down our long driveway. I always try to be hyper aware of where my son might be, but it still terrifies me that something like this might happen.

According to this website, it happens to an average of 50 kids a week in America.

There are things in life that I thought would never happen to me, especially before I had kids. I thought parents were just stupid and mindless and careless. Now, as a parent of two, I get it. I see how these things happen. And I'm a lot more understanding of the frailties of human beings as opposed to being a young, single, know-it-all (not aimed at you, but myself personally).

It's not worth the anxiety.

The backup camera was invented and (finally) is more common in new cars now based on incidents like this.

Supplemental backup lights could help too.
