Rapaport: Blount and Pats have mutual interest

Get back to me about YPC at any point when the running game is a major source of field position. Belichick doesn't do the conventional thing with play calling so we can't always rely on conventional stats to tell the story

Blount didn't have 300+ short yardage situation carries last year.

why does that matter? Far more of his runs were short yardage compared to an average feature back. If the team wanted more than 5 yards they got it from Brady not Blount. They ran from open field formations even less in the playoffs and leaned on Brady even more and that explains the lower playoff YPC well enough.

Blount is not the answer if the question is "Should we try to be the Broncos or Chiefs fantasy running back factory?"

Blount is the answer if the question is "Should we have a guy on staff you can hand the ball off to on 3rd and short or in the end zone and make sure we get 6 points (or a first down) not 3 points (or a punt.)"

That's a role. He's not a random vulture back ONLY, but that's the main good thing about having Blount on board.

The extra little thing is if he gets loose, he can rumble for quite a few more, so you have to commit to get this guy. People have seen the games where they half-assed the "get Blount" part of the game plan and it's not pretty.

He's not the greatest best of the best of the best in any way really. He's just goodish at some stuff and great at other stuff, not world-beating at any of it. But he doesn't seem to think he'll get "world beating" cash.

You feel more or less comfortable going into a game with Lagarette?

I feel more comfortable. Remember, I'm an adult survivor of Laurence Maroney.

Blount is pissed since he thought Pats never paid RBs and he was ok with that until he saw the Rex Burkhead signing for $3m which is twice what Blount made last year, and is still much more than the Pats are offering Blount now.

Burkhead played 32 games for Bengals last 2 seasons and had 348 rushing yards over last two seasons and 2 TDs. In addition Burkhead had 27 receptions for 239 yards over last two season.

Blount played 28 games for Patriots last 2 seasons and had 1,864 rushing yards and 24 TDs. In addition Blount had 13 receptions for 81 yards last two seasons.

He's wondering WTF is going on. So am I.

I "Liked" but "WTF" is a way of life by now as a Pats fan. Burkhead is vintage 2013, and maybe they see potential upside. Maybe that ratio of yards out of the backfield looks good in a Pats-first attack.

I'd like for the to keep Blount on hand for the reasons above. Maybe 3 years of additional hard wear on the tread (Blount is a fine 2010 vintage) is auguring against those 3rd down and goal line carries. Maybe he's an UDFA in Bill's eyes who really did exceed his apparent potential but still cannot contribute (at the outside) what a Burkhead can, in upside potential.

And maybe he wants both - and if the Pats and Blount are still close enough to have "mutual interest," maybe that comparison is something for Blount and his agent to grind on, not me.

Maybe he's $2M worth of short yardage roleplaying, or 1.5M, or whatever.... and maybe we're just waiting to see a surprisingly healthy deal (though yes... "surprisingly" would be the key word.)

So Imunno. To coin a phrase, wake me up when September starts

I was in love with his potential
I still remember when he teased us the one game with 2 TDs

You were in love with what you wanted him to be Chris... you never really saw him, only the need you had for him. You can let go... I want you to practice holding that Chad Jackson jersey from your deck in the back yard, and just letting it go.

Okay I'm afraid our time is up.

imo blount will eventually sign. its either sign with the pats or likely sit out the whole season/retire. this is all about Pride and the fact that despite his season no team is willing to pay him what he wants.

Hightower went through a smaller scale version of this.

Least newsie news in the history of news, given that we've already got Blount singing the Praises of G.O.A.T., BB and the Patriots, and we've got the report of the Patriots having made an offer to Blount.

"Sky looks blue! Film at 11."
Mutual of Omaha's Wild Peyton presents LeGarrette, meet Bill, what do you say? Interested?

BB pays for future (potential) production. Not past.

He seems to believe Burkhead will excel in our system.

That's pretty much the bottom line, and the situation with choosing to pay Gilmore over Butler seems to be quite similar.

No reason to think that they paid Burkhead ''over'' Blount or Gilmore ''over'' Butler. ''Signed first'' rarely means ''signed instead of.''

In each case the budget can probably contain both men if they want it. Plenty of cap space to go around. You need more than one RB or CB to win championships anyways. And neither Gilmore or Burkhead play their yet-to-be-signed counterpart's exact role.

Just because they paid these other guys first doesn't mean that Burkhead got any of Blount's money or Gilmore got any of Butler's
