Rapaport: Blount and Pats have mutual interest

Why did bb give Rex over 3 million? I can not figure this out.

Me neither. If he likes him that much, why only a one-year deal?

I understand Blount had a monster year as far as numbers go and he wants to cash in on that, but even he had to realize, he was cooked by game 12. Bb knows a running backs legs are the first to go.

"Cooked"? Seriously? This is in the 3rd Quarter of the AFC Championship Game!

If you want a negative example of Blount's running, go back to Week 5 against the Browns. He ran for 37 yards on 18 carries and the Pats were stopped on 4th Down on the goal line. Now whether that was on Blount, Develin (most of his runs were from the I), the O-Line or McDaniels for calling very predictable plays, I don't know. It was certainly very frustrating to watch, but I can't believe it was the result of him being worn out.

Blount must be miffed that Rex got $3m

You get what your role is valued at. Blount is just not versatile and good enough to be paid more in this offense. At this point in his career he should have realized that.

So Rex whatever is going to have a bigger role than Blount?

Would like to see him get a paycheck. Guy bought into the patriot way totally.
Right. Doing what's best for the franchise is one thing, but I really hope BB isn't being penny wise, pound foolish here. This is a better team with LeGarritte Blount than without him

That's actually possible. Blount is only really effective at one aspect of the running game, vertical, top down short yardage power runs. It just happens that that's one of the more visible running back roles. If Burkhead is at least decent as a short yardage power back, his extra versatility on routes and in special teams might make him a better overall package. But I still want Blount as a short yardage specialist if nothing else.

One thing BB will never do is pay for splash. He'll pay you the value your role is actually worth, regardless of whether or not it also draws a lot of eyeballs. if I'm LeGarritte Blount, the disappointing thing for me isn't the Pats going cheap, it's no other team selling out on the pizzazz of a running back scoring 18 touchdowns and pulling off a number of "wow" plays like the power runs against the Cardinals or the Steelers

Personally if I was another team that needed a running back I'd kick the tires on Blount. He was mostly kept within a role, but in the first 4 games, he was asked for a lot more, especially games 3 and 4 when Jacoby Brissett was under center, and generally peaking he got the job done. Frankly with that in mind I'm a little surprised Blount didn't get a sniff from another team.

Is it possible that the poor fool only wants to play for New England?

I think he's pretty mediocre except at the goal line. It would be refreshing to see a genuine threat in the backfield once again, especially to take some of the weight off Brady's shoulders in his "twilight" years.

So,

1) you explain that as being all those goaline 1 ypc TDs.

2) And he didn't have as many 20+ yard runs as you would like.

Yet, as I pointed out, even calculating in those two above points you made, he STILL had a 3.9 ypc average.

I'm sorry, Tunie, but your contentions and SIMPLE MATH pretty much prove he had an outstanding regular season last year. And looking at his career, he is on an upward trajectory (as is clearly the opposite with Peterson).

I do agree, however, that (outside of the DeflateGate game) he has not been a good post-season RB.

If it wasn't for his no-show in the Superbowl, he wouldn't have had a bad postseason at all. The Falcons defense was really, really good, the whole team had to play rope-a-dope against it for an extended period of time before they were able to start executing plays against it. Blount was a victim of the O-line being outmatched for most of the first half forcing us to use Brady's quick-draw ability as our primary offensive tactic for almost the entire game. That wasn't his fault at all, he just couldn't overcome it as well as the all-time greatest can
.

I was a little sad that Blount never got a chance to redeem himself after the bad fumble early in the Superbowl but the game just evolved in a way that it would be idiotic not to put the game 100% on Brady's arm, and that meant that you wanted White out there most of the time for his receiving skills and there was no chance for Blount to get his own back.

Well, one of is is slanting the data by using a post-ACL season and ignoring the non-ACL (well, the before ACL injury portion of) season so, yeah, we disagree on what's important.

However, if you want to level the playing field a bit, just take a look at the following:

Lewis 2015 - 36 receptions in 7 games
Lewis 2016 - 17 receptions in 7 games

White 2015 - 40 receptions in 14 games
White 2016 - 60 receptions in 16 games

In other words, even with the ACL issue clearly impacting his numbers last year, Lewis (3.8) is averaging more receptions per game than is White (3.3), since Lewis joined the team. Lewis, with that 3.8 (3.7857), is even averaging more receptions per game than White averaged in his best year (last season) (3.75).

Sure would be interesting to see Lewis play more than a 7 game season someday. He hasn't since 2012 when he was doing spot duty for the Eagles.

The fact that blount, peterson and charles are not signed shows to me the market for running backs is not what they are looking for.

But as no team is going to show these guys the $$ at some point they are going to have to accept what is on the table.

So imo blount will be back it might take some time but eventually he will realize pats have the best offer out there

LeGarrette Blount is an acquired taste, like that for good bourbon. When he first arrived I was reminded of my worse Patriot running back nightmares, 2 yards Marion Butts and a cloud of dust. Like your first taste of strong alcohol it was dry and not something you were sure you wanted more of. But then you realized Yukon Jack was not good bourbon and LeGarrette Blount was a whole other level running back than Marion Butts.

LeGarrette Blount is tied for 11th all time in NFL playoff rushing touchdowns and Marshawn Lynch has 1 more than him and is the only one ahead of Blount that is not in the NFL hall of fame

Where LeGarrette Blount stands all time in Regular Season Patriots History
1st career rushing average by RB
1st single season rushing touchdowns
4th in career rushing touchdowns
10th in career rushing yardage by RB

Patriots Playoff History
1st rushing touchdowns
2nd career rushing yardage
2 time Super Bowl Champion

In 7 seasons of football he has earned less than 7 million dollars.

Loosing Blount in 2015 had a major impact on our ability to compete and everyone knew it.

LeGarrette, hope you are with Tom's guys doing the whole off season rejuvenation thing.

Blount must be miffed that Rex got $3m
This might be accurate but he has to understand his situation and the RB market.

I'm certain if Blount had the year he just had at 25 years old he would have also received $3m if not more.

The fact he is 30 and not a big part of the passing game is killing him.

Blount's 30, looking for what's likely to be his last paycheck, and competing against two guys in similar boats in Peterson and Charles, one of whom is a future Hall of Famer and the other is a special running back when injured, at a position that gets more and more devalued each year.

Also: that siht that went down in Pittsburgh.

Love him more for that. He wanted out of Ben's world and came back to help us win the SB. '14 and '16 were a nice nose rub for the Squealers

There are at least 5 really promising running backs in the draft. Maybe they're just waiting until after that.

Peterson wants a big contract. Charles is a massive injury risk. Blount is a potential headache outside of NE.

Lol, me too. But how can that not scare away other suitors?

His average yards per carry has dropped each of the last three seasons and as you rightly observe he was a non-factor in the postseason. I'm not saying he was "bad" last year, just not a dynamic threat. I'd like to see a breakdown of his first-down runs where he really seemed to flounder. Someone like Ridley (pre-injury) would make me happy at that position. The Ridley-Vereen combo was pretty good.
