Jason La Canfora: Revis return to Patriots looking increasingly likely

Cheap?

How much is a roster spot worth?

If you get him at a price where there is not much if any guaranteed money in case he needs to be cut during camp then there is no reason not to kick the tires.

Can't ignore a player like him if you get him for peanuts.

From the article:

“We did our work on him. He can still play. He can cover. He doesn’t have that long speed anymore; he’s not going to cover a No. 1 receiver deep. But he can cover in tight spaces and he has great instincts. The film is not as bad as some would have you believe. He’s a perfect fit in that quarters scheme Belichick runs, and they have the kind of safeties who can help him out, too. We’re convinced he’s going back to New England. It just makes too much sense.”

Revis had an awful year last year - he absolutely sucked and at one point, seemed to just give up.

He was being ill-used. The island is gone. Getting torched played on his mind, of course.

if BB thinks he can help the team at the cost of getting him, BB gets him.

For the veteran minimum and him wanting to redeem himself after last season, why not give him a shot?

"A Darrelle Revis return to New England looks increasingly likely. Numerous league sources, including some close to Revis, believe that if the potential future Hall of Fame corner plays anywhere in 2017 it will be for the Patriots"

How does, "if I was to play anywhere in 2017, it would be for NE" morph into "Revis is likely returning to NE"? I don't buy it. Seems like wishful thinking and/or pure speculation.

I'm all for it. He was very good not long ago. His poor performance was due to getting fat, happy and unmotivated. Being seen as ****ty right now, plus the offseason drama he went through, will motivate him to get back to the level he's actually capable of.

Assuming Butler's gone... Gilmore on one side, Rowe on the other side, and a motivated Revis on the third WR/maybe RB or TE, with McCourty and Chung/Harmon support, would be an incredible secondary.

Then think about the idea of the Jets paying Revis to win his SECOND Patriots ring, and it's just too great NOT to happen.

Dennard upon leaving NE: out of NFL
Browner upon leaving NE: Statistically the worst CB in the NFL with the Saints
Ryan upon leaving NE: TBD

As @luuked has pointed out, odds are slim we pay two CBs big money because BB's system/McCourty are used to protect physical CB2s here (and why Revis could do well).

2015 Revis allowed a QB rating of 56...that's not vet minimum territory. If BB thinks 2016 was an aberration due to mitigating factors...

I figure he has a very good chance too. People look at Revis and ask perhaps "why would he come back here?". I ask "Where else would he go?"

He has been on 3 NFL teams so far and I know he doesn't want to go back on a loser unless it is the Jets who don't want him.

He never felt at home in Tampa I think either. In the end you go with what you know given the choice.

We may as well just merge this thread with the Butler thread, since both of them are pointing to what I've been saying all along.

We don't need to overpay a pro bowl #2 corner with our excellent safety play. Revis will cost us $1M (and the Jets $5M). Our #2/3 corner may be a by-committee approach depending on the matchup. Revis might play half the snaps and still be able to contribute just fine.

If he loses 20 pounds....

Frankly i don't like him after he made negative comments on brady and then blamed it on someone hacking his twitter.

I saw a report recently where Revis has already lost 17 pounds.

I wouldn't hold the comments against him. He did his boss a favor by trying to rile up the fan base.

.

Nope, I don't think so. He has a choice to play for any team for the veteran's minimum (with the Jets picking up the remaining amount to $6M,). He will make $6M this year whether he sits on his couch, or if he plays for any particular team. It makes no difference where he plays from a short-term financial perspective. But from a long-term perspective, it may:

He would pick the Patriots because it's the best situation to restablish himself as good cornerback and perhaps set himself up for a final big pay day somewhere else. National publicity, Belichick's coaching, playing for a winning team - all things that will considerably help to boost his stock, which has bottomed out.

He has a ring and doesn't give a damn about getting another one, I'm quite sure, but he would play hard. This is a career make-or-break year. Play well, survive and cash in. Fail, and it's over.

It's always about the financials with Revis, despite how his camp will try to spin this one. And Belichick is probably fine with that, because he is also always about the financials. Win-Win, with the Jets being the loser.

I don't like him, but it would be funny just to bring more misery to the NFL and Jets fans
