NFL Network's Ian Rapoport reports restricted free agent CB Malcolm Butler and the Saints have opened contract negotiations.

Rapoport adds the two sides "hope to strike a deal this week." There are not many other reasons for Butler to visit the Saints except to work on a deal, but this is notable nevertheless. The Saints would owe New England the No. 11 overall pick if the Patriots decline to match an offer sheet, but that is likely more than they are willing to pay. The two sides will likely try to work out a trade.

If you think teams don't negotiate with players that have signed the tender you are kidding yourself.

So let me see if I get this straight:

Butler is stupid because he has not yet signed the tender, even though there is zero chance in hell the Patriots rescind the offer. What he (and his agent) should do, according to you, is sign the tender (even though they gain absolutely nothing by signing it) and then negotiate illegally with other teams, hoping the Patriots are willing to trade him even though once the tender is signed, he has no ability whatsoever to force such a thing.

No fooling. That's why it's stupid to sigh the tender. They can openly talk to the guy and work out the deal with him before going back to the Patriots.

NO trades #32 and #46 to Pats for Butler.
Patriots get both their first and second round picks back and this was likely the plan all along when Cooks trade went down.
This would be a great trade if it happens for Patriots.
Not sure if saints will agree to BOTH 32 and 46 however.

I am also hoping the headline tomorrow does NOT read, Patriots lose BOTH B butler and Hightower in FA. Just starting to feel that way. This whole thing has dragged on too long and resolution is coming soon....

As for this subject I think I would be happy with 32 and 42 with us sending the Panthers' 3rd, 72 or whatever.

I love Butler, but I really wonder how much is him and how much the system. Even if it is 85% him and only 15% the system, I think it is time to move on and we can use those picks, and the long term money to improve the team more than signing Butler to a long term market value deal.

I would then offer Cleveland Jimmy G, #32, and our 1 next year for #12 and their 1 next year. If they decline I would settle for sending them Jimmy and #42 for #12, #33, and 2018 Texans 2nd. Which by the way is the 2nd the Browns got from Houston, not this year's.

Sucks that Belichick is about to allow himself to get fleeced by Sean Payton just because they are buddies. #32 sucks as values for Butler, I'd rather just keep him this year and get a 3rd comp pick when he leaves. It's going to be even more maddening when then cap strapped Saints sign Butler to modest deal. This is Belichick's 1st big screw up in a while, Patriots have all the leverage and are about to get screwed. Now we have to call Revis's fat ass to have any chance of having a decent #2 CB this year.

They did not sign the tender in the hope to achieve a long-term deal with NE.

When they start shopping with other teams it's irrelevant.

Hes not going anywhere until NE says so.

Not signing the tender does not change the status of NE's control of the player.

Thats my point. They are going to talk anyway. All the tender does is protect the player and the team. At this point, to BB its irrelevant if he signs the tender or not. If Payton wants Malcolm hes going to talk to BB anyway. If Payton wants Malcolm hes going to talk to talk to Malcolm anyway.

He wants top 10 cb $$ and hes not getting it with a first round tender.
