Patriots trade for WR Brandin Cooks (NO BUTLER INVOLVED). Gave up 1st & 3rd rounder for Cooks + 4th

One tweet that Butler still could be traded and Saints fans seem to have come to the conclusion that there's a wink wink, nudge nudge deal that he's going to them as soon as he signs his tender. Which if you're Butler why take away the only leverage that you have?

Anyway, I don't think they tendered him at the 1st round level to take less for him later.

Just got out of the theaters watching Kong Skull Island (Great movie btw) to find out that we got Cooks without giving up Butler. WOW! Brady's got the keys to a ferrari. Cooks, Gronk, Lewis and White in the backfield. We got some serious skill on O.

This honestly feels like BB rewarding Brady for everything he's done. Brady's like a General war hero being gifted with extravagant goods before he he soon retires.

Guys, why does anybody need a first round pick from anyone? They just "drafted" a top flight NFL receiver. If they have no first round pick and keep Butler and Hightower, call me happy!

saints board going apeshit good example:

"Wow. What the hell just happened? That is HORRIBLE value for Brandon Cooks

And FA was going so good too, Loomis just went and screwed up all the optimism I was feeling. I mean we literally turned down a much, much better offer just a few days ago. And somebody tell me why on earth we included our fourth round pick? Even if we hadn't included our fourth rounder, I'd still hate this trade. I feel like value wise, this deal is still missing Butler. If we had traded Cooks and our 4th round pick for pick #32, their 3rd round pick AND Butler, then that would be a decent deal value wise. Without Butler or something else coming from them, this feels like the worst I've seen the Patriots rob someone in a trade ever and they do it all the time. "

It's no wonder their franchise is light years beyond every other team. Their GM has mind control powers. I'm not joking. I mean, that's the only reasonable explanation right? There's no way that Sean Payton or Mickey Loomis could've possibly thought this was even a slightly reasonable offer for Cooks, unless their minds had been completely taken over by Bill Belicheck and Robert Kraft.

I have a question. Rumour was Titans were in too, why didn't the Saints accept their first rounder (is it that obvious either they were not in it or didn't offer a first)

If the Titans did offer a first, a better first.. then I would go out on a limb to say that Butler is going to the Saints when Butler signs his offer sheet.

The Pats reportedly gave them 2 picks

I'm seeing Kong tomorrow with my nephew. Glad to hear it was good!

Maybe the pats aren't fans of the top of this draft

Ill take hop. He has done more with less. cooks is a nice player though. I like him despite what I have said about him

I think cooks stand to do better with the system here....in many instances, Hopkins has a higher end but here I think it's cooks

BB > Allen Dulles

So, where does Cooks line up on the field? On paper -- his measurables, his numbers -- remind me a great deal of Doug Baldwin. Baldwin is easily one of the most dominant slot receivers in the game. It's been my dream the last couple years for us to add Baldwin (not that it was realistic -- just a pie-in-the-sky daydream).

Does Cooks play slot much? Is that where we will use him? To me, Cooks is like a faster version of Baldwin, and that's a tremendous compliment.

So technically they've managed their cap space but the problem is spending in the right areas?

They have two good CBs now. They need a pass rush and to stop the run.

Malcolm is not the answer to their defensive woes.

@pherein accurate?
No when Godell Removed our HC, picks and our key players we had to pay for free high priced players to replace what was destroyed. It pretty much wrecked the team. Lumas was suspended and not allowed to talk to the saints, so we bought guys to fill the gaps. That created a cap hell that we are still dealing with bad signings. I agree that Malcolm is not the answer. So, so by farming only picks for D makes sense. I think, and you really got an amazing talent for the future. Cooks wont let you down, just give him slack first 1-3 games because hes on grass and the weather, but he will work out well.

opposite Mitchell as a wide out.

That package swap a 3rd for a 4th would never have cost 32 to 18 in the first round which is the difference between our 32 and the Titans pick at 18. If the Titans offered that 18, then the Saints took less from us so far.

Wow, we are pushing a lot of chips in for the coming year. Usually Bill likes to split his assets out over more time.

Plenty X is approaching and 90% of us will be dead in two years.

As usual, BB is playing chess while everyone else is playing checkers.

Alex I'll Take "Champions" For 1 Million Dollars

Who are NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS............. CORRECT!

Thank, now that was profound.

. Hey I get the fact that given the increased use of press man coverage there is a premium on receivers who can create separation through size speed or quickness, and Cooks is one of those guys. But I would counter by saying despite all the our current WR's who supposedly can't do that, we somehow managed almost 600 yds against EXACTLY that style of defense.

It's not that I don't want more guys who can beat man coverage, its the cost, both short term and long, for a improvement that I wonder we will see. For example I would have rather kept those picks and signed Floyd who is receiver who, while quite different from Cooks, can create separation by raw speed and size.

. I thought we played most of the best defenses in the league last season and did pretty well. Didn't we have the 2nd best scoring average in the league just slightly behind a historically great offense.

Again how much better will it get. Is this addition going to propel Brady to be better than 14-1? Or 6000 yds, 40 points a game. If the latter is true, then maybe I'll agree with you.

. see above

. I'm happy you're happy. It's just that I've never had a problem with "freakin' deep-middle"
Good post, Ken -- my thoughts exactly. This was a BIG price to pay for a luxury that wasn't needed. I don't quite understand it. You have to think a good linebacker, DE tweener, corner or running back prospect would be available at 32. And also because of this we probably never will see what Floyd could've done here.

Damn I hate giving up that first round pick. If we keep High and Butler tho damn son.
