Butler For Cooks Deal Being Hashed Out Between NE-NO

Butler
-Top 5 CB in the league
-High character/team guy
-Plays his ass off
-Overachiever underdog story
-2x champion, clutchest play in SB history

Cook
-Not even a top 15 WR
-Low character/me first guy
-Literally COMPLAINED after a game the Saints won in a blowout (49-21) because he had no catches: Report: Brandin Cooks is growing frustrated with Saints’ offense

I ****ing hate this idea.

Keep Butler and have one of the best secondaries in the NFL. The team has the money, the contract will be for prime of his career...what's the issue here?
First off, it's difficult to agree that Butler is a "top 5 CB." I think most of us would have him in the top 12-15 range, and even that may be slightly generous, obviously depending upon personal opinion about his weaknesses. He did however, go from an UDFA who wasn't even a lock to make the team on opening night 2015, to a very solid and dependable starter. In my opinion, I'd like to see him stay and I definitely share your concerns about making the trade.

In the end, BB is the one making the talent evaluations, and apparently he thought Gilmore was ranked higher than Butler or else he wouldn't have given him the richest contract for a defensive player in NEP history. It is what it is, I guess. At this point, I'm just hoping that Butler is here for 2017, but I think the odds are low of him returning on a long term deal. His money went to Gilmore.

Y'all STILL have not learned to trust in BB?!?!!?

How did that work out 2005-2013? The man is not perfect. Just because he makes a move doesn't mean that it can't be moronic. And this looks moronic.

Pretty apt comparison. Something's brewing. Too much smoke from both sides.

I said this yesterday when the news of Gilmore initially broke.

I think the Pats have moved on from Butler unless he agrees to a very team friendly deal in exactly the same vein as with Welker.

2 SB appearances with close losses, playoff bound in every season except when Brady was injured and generally the most successful team in the league. A rebuild on the fly between 2009 and 2010.

He did amazingly well during that time. If you measures success by SB titles you are an idiot.

It's so demoralizing following this team. It feels like watching The Walking Dead (which I quit at the beginning of season 7- don't miss it) There is absolutely no point in getting attached to any of the characters because it's inevitable that they will meet an untimely demise. Kind of like Pats players. At what point does this affect player morale and loyalty. The Pats must have a well earned reputation round the league. I'm surprised we are able to attract any free agents at this point.

Don't be shocked when Bill resigns Garopollo and trades Brady next offseason for a second or third round pick. He is stone cold and this organization is obsessed with long term contention rather than short term greatness.

Yeah, if only BB could deliver shot term greatness like 5 AFCCG in a row or 2 Superbowls in 3 years.

Do you even believe any of the nonsense that you just wrote ?

Is it malcolm butler or malcontent butler? He's was ridiculous to not sign a contract extension before. Would have worked for everyone.

This is the worst post I have ever read.

When the Pats make a move it comes out of left field, the fact that this has got so much attention leads me to believe it ain't gonna happen.

WTF are you talking about? If following the greatest sport franchise is demoralizing to you, you probably should stop watching or try your luck with another team. Players come, players go, thats the business. And to your short term greatness point: Seven Super Bowl appearances in 15 years are an average of one SB every two years. And more recently this team had TWO SUPER BOWL WINS IN THREE YEARS! BB wants short term and long term success and he's the best at putting a team together with which this is possible.

At about 30+ million in cap space after today's deals.

We can make Butler & Gilmore work longterm.

Could sign Hightower & Butler and still have more than enough cap to bring into the draft/season.

I hope you're right. I'm not as adept with all the salary cap stuff beyond a basic understanding. I'll leave that to you guys. I want Butler on this team long-term if that's still possible (reports out that he's asking for a million acres and a mule).

I have no clue I am just thinking if the Patriots offered Gilmore 40m guaranteed then why wouldn't they offer Butler similar. Do you think Gilmore is better than Butler? I honestly have no idea but I didn't think he was.
He has more upside, size and speed. But that doesn't necessarily make him better than Butler at this point. Butler has great qualities and intangibles, but he's also very physical, quick and smart. I'm still hoping they can keep both, but I just don't see it. Bill has historically been against paying too dollar to corners, and he's now done it with one. I just can't see him doing it with two. But who knows?

My seven-year-old sometimes angrily says, " I hate you!" when I snatch away his iPad In the middle of a 90 minute Pokémon marathon.
He knows how you feel.

Adults getting attached to strangers : will never understand. BB is a winner. All those former SB teams that just re-sign everyone "cause they just had an amazing SB run" fall off the face of the Earth the next season.

Love me some Butler, but winning is always better than any one player. Yes, including Brady. So, yes, for sure Butler as well.

Say what you will, but nobody wins the SB every year. It's hard! The man got us to 7 SB & JUST WON # 5!!!! WHO ELSE IN NFL HISTORY IS ABLE TO SAY THAT?!??? Exactly; NOBODY! I'm riding with BB all day everyday. Mistakes are how you refine yourself & get better. Yes, he's made his fair share, but WHO IS perfect??? Anybody not trusting BB & his FOOTBALL discernment is moronic. Relax.

Demoralizing?? 5 SB's later with an overall record of 201 & 71 as HC of the NEP. Never mind the 25 & 9 post season record..

Most of learned early on do not get attached to the veterans..

You should have been a fan in the early 90's to fully appreciate this team....
