Patriots Trade For Indy TE Dwayne Allen

Half of Allens touchdowns last season came in 1 game against the Jets on that Monday Night debacle where the Colts ran them out of the building.

And yet his 6 TD were good enough for #2 on the colts

Oh and FYI Bennett had 7 TD last year and 3 of them came against the Browns. And Bennett was pretty much the primary TE last season with Gronk only playing 5 games

But I guess that doesn't fit your narrative

And last, but definitely not the least important...

The pain and anger this guy could potentially bring to all of Colts nation if he even remotely works out here, definitely makes it worth the risk. Watching this guy succeed will bring so much joy (and pain for indy fans) with each play and catch.

Even if he doesn't work out. Well be in the playoff's and they'll be fighting for 3rd-4th place in the AFC south.

**** the colts

I take it that you're not a fan of the trade. I wasn't either until i saw his contract details. They can cut him after next season if he sucks. Still can't believe he will make more than a guy like edelman.

I don't mind the 4th round pick, just not a big fan of the player, think he's soft and gets hurt and drops too many passes.

I think the Colts kept the better of their 2 TEs, Doyle i like as a player, Allen not so much.

I've been wrong before though, he needs to stay healthy though which is a worry cause he's missed games the last thing we need is the Gronk cover getting hurt too.

Well i hope he gets to work early with brady and learning the playbook. I always wondered about his ability to get seperation consistently.

Also something that I would like to note.

Allen is a very underrated route runner, id say very compatible, and maybe even possibly better then Bennett. This I know from watching a lot of All 22 each season for gambling purposes. Very underrated

His issue is, he's not the most athletic, so he can still fail to create separation against good (#1) coverage linebackers and safeties. In the offense, especially if Gronk is healthy, thats won't be nearly as big of a problem for him on a per play basis. Combine this with Brady's and McD's ability to create (and see) mismatches, I only see greener pastures for him here on the Patriots.

I disagree completely about your ERFA statement. All of the "other" TEs that are under contract are longshots:

* Housler: out of league since September 2016,
* Williams: post-acl,
* Lengel: 1 ST unit, limited snaps, <5 receptions despite being #2 on the depth chart behind Marty - spells imminently replaceable..

Nobody here is breaking the bank when cut and quite honestly I don't think any of the three will be on the final roster with Housler having an outside chance if there is something left in him.

In terms of draft I haven't bought into any media hype and if you look through the draft board you can see that many there (including me) came to their conclusions almost independent on media coverage.

Disagree all you want. Doesn't mean you are right.

Name me ONE ERFA in the past that the Patriots have signed that they have cut during training camp.

BTW, I never mentioned Housler.. Someone else did. He IS Training camp fodder. So that doesn't help your argument at all..

BTW, you might want to refresh your arguments since Post-ACL doesn't mean jack anymore. Especially when Williams will be 13 months post op by the time TC rolls around. He's also only 26 as well.. He's not 32 and trying to come back from an Achilles injury ala Vince Wilfork..

Sometimes I feel Like you don't even watch football.

When you take all things into consideration, Bennetts stats aren't that far off from Allens in 2016.

Both played with nagging injuries (both ankles), and Allen often got "shut down" in the second half of games once their season was essentially over

Allen was splitting targets with another tight end, which Bennett was not for most of the season, in a offense that throws to WR's much more then tight ends. Not to mention on a very lac-luster team with a QB who plays Favorites.

When you take that into consideration, those 20 less catches, and 300 less yards, and ONLY 1 less TD, really doesn't seem all that different. (both had 3td games against horrible teams)

Like Honestly, thats before you consider he's going to cost almost a cool million less then Bennett made last year, THIS year, and about half of what Bennett is looking to make this year, Oh, and he's 3.5 years younger on top of it, with a very bargain contract remaining, that takes him into his almost 30's.

And lastly, we traded a 5th round pick for A.J Derby last year, and id take Allen over Derby any day of the year, and we could potentially receive up to a 4th as a comp pick by having Bennett walk this year. Also to note, Derby was a 6th round pick, something we just got, and something we upgraded upon.

At this point, this trade is looking great, and Im feeling like in the end, not a sole will regret it. I don't see how you're so negative or at ends with it.

Exactly. Welcome to the BB masterclass: 2016-2017 TE story.

Gronk (recovering) and Derby on the roster. (M Williams injured in June)
Note: Gronk on arguably best bargain deal in the league (pos. only behind TB).
  1. 4th for Bennett and 6th
  2. Harbor cut - acquired 5th comp pick (Hicks)
  3. Derby traded for 5th (drafted w 6th)
Pats win SBLI.
  1. 4th for Allen and 6th
  2. Bennett (probably) leaves as UFA - probable 4th comp for Bennett
Recap: BB invested 3 picks (two 4th + one 6th) and gets back 5 picks (one comp 4th + two 5th + two 6th) . to have a top-tier #2 TE on below market deal both years . that is also Gronk's insurance policy . in other words: to be as insured as possible to have at least one quality complete TE on the field at all time..

ps
Apologies to Mr. Scruggs for not including him in the story. Maybe in the sequel..

This addresses one of our top needs. Kind of surprised we pulled off a deal with the Colts, but oh well, I think he can help us.

Not sure how TE was ever one of the Pats "TOP" needs. Not when you have issues at DE, CB, and S..

Exact same as the Bennett deal. BTW, we have a good chance to get that #4 back (a year later) as a comp pick for Bennett depending how many UFA we sign.

Winner.

They get a 6th and Allen for the Seahawks 4th, and then get the comp pick for Bennett. They get a 27 year old 6'3 255 TE who can step right into the #2 role at a team friendly price.

And to top it off Colts fans are pissed.

Nice.

It is one of our top needs along with those you mentioned. That's what "one of" means.

Would've preffered to kept Bennett but in BB I trust

The ability to separate concerns me. Maybe i reminisce too much when the murderer and gronk where both on the same field causing havoc. I miss that i guess.
