Rapaport: Hightower "exploring, but open to returning to the Patriots"

Once again, that's why it happens all the time. Teams are always giving up their first round picks and top of the market money for RFA's. It must have happened five times just last year alone.

Its not that it happens all the time, it is because there are so few lockdown corners that enter are tendered. Most lockdown corners get contract extensions before hitting RFA. It is rare. Think about the number of corners that you would put in Butler's league that have become RFAs. I cannot think of a single one.

Alternatively, how many first round cornerbacks become busts or just average corners in the league?

Wonder what this is about.
The Hoodie spotted working out in Franklin Tennessee, near Hightower's hometown

Ha! He's got a tablet propped on the console so he's probably breaking down game film while he's working out.

The 10 mil. offer to Hightower before the season began was the Patriot's last, best
offer. What is going on now is a charade to make the fans think they are negotiating.

No but that's not true at all

The bottom line is that teams don't give up 1st round pick's and huge contracts.

Sure they do. They used to do it all the time before the latest CBA. Did you manage to come up with an example of a player of Butler's stature being given a 1st round tender? They are almost always signed to long term contracts before they hit RFA...I cannot think of any.

The last CBA was signed 6 years ago, so in other words it doesn't happen.

First round picks don't become restricted free agents, they sign five year deals.

My point is that teams would draft a first round pick and pay the guy a huge contract....i.e. Sam Bradford when he was drafted.

You haven't come up with any examples of RFA of Butler's caliber yet

You are the one claiming teams will give a 1st and big money to an RFA, so you are the one who needs to show the evidence to support it.

I won't have to, wait another day and we will see it.

I understand your point that you think butler is different but there have been many good players on 1st round RFA tenders that no one signed.
I think your perception first that this is totally unique and second what the reaction would be if it is unprecedented are wrong.
I think yiubwill be proven wrong but who knows, we will see.

Actually I hope we don't see and that the pats extend him before he had a chance to negotiate. (I think the negative of RFA is that teams can actually make him an offer for NEXT year when there is no comp and the bar gets raised to extend him here)

OK @captain insano
How about letting us all in on the secret of exactly what your definition of "overpaying" is?

No, it is a fact. Paying Butler a market contract and giving up your first round pick is, by definition, overpaying. Giving up anything more than a market contract is overpaying. That's what overpaying means.

And of course a team could do it. But that doesn't mean it's not overpaying.

That is incorrect. Like the other person, you are making a category error. The markets aren't the same. The tender market is not the standard FA market. Paying market value to the opposing team (in this case, a 1st round pick) plus a reasonable positional contract to the player is a market deal.

You can argue that the tender market is, by its nature, inherently too expensive (just as you can argue that the standard FA market is inherently too expensive), but that's a different argument.

Agree, however I think the discussion was based upon 'market' meaning what Butler would get in the open market as a UFA without that string attached, and the string attached is what constitutes overpaying.
If you are defining 'market' as RFA market, I would assume you mean the contract would be less than he would get as a UFA.

This makes me feel more confident in his return. Seems like the conversations have been positive throughout this process. Unless a team goes wayyy overboard with an offer, I think he stays a Patriot.
we need a "hope" or a "prayer" rating

And that's why I called it a category error. We know that there are different sub-markets in sports. Some simple examples:

First contract
ERFA contract
RFA contract
Free agency
Tagged players

The same player, playing at the same level, will be looking at different market values in each of those sub-markets, so the parameters of an overpay aren't fixed.

We agree

Hightower has two rings. He hates NE weather.
TN has the cap space. He's going home. :/

The only silver lining there is that he would at least beat up on the Colts 2x a year
