Think about the number of corners that you would put in Butler's league that have become RFAs. I cannot think of a single one.

Sure they do. They used to do it all the time before the latest CBA. Did you manage to come up with an example of a player of Butler's stature being given a 1st round tender? They are almost always signed to long term contracts before they hit RFA...I cannot think of any.

The last CBA was signed 6 years ago, so in other words it doesn't happen.

You are the one claiming teams will give a 1st and big money to an RFA, so you are the one who needs to show the evidence to support it.

I understand your point that you think butler is different but there have been many good players on 1st round RFA tenders that no one signed.
I think your perception first that this is totally unique and second what the reaction would be if it is unprecedented are wrong.
I think yiubwill be proven wrong but who knows, we will see.


Actually I hope we don't see and that the pats extend him before he had a chance to negotiate. (I think the negative of RFA is that teams can actually make him an offer for NEXT year when there is no comp and the bar gets raised to extend him here)

No, it is a fact. Paying Butler a market contract and giving up your first round pick is, by definition, overpaying. Giving up anything more than a market contract is overpaying. That's what overpaying means.

And of course a team could do it. But that doesn't mean it's not overpaying.

That is incorrect. Like the other person, you are making a category error. The markets aren't the same. The tender market is not the standard FA market. Paying market value to the opposing team (in this case, a 1st round pick) plus a reasonable positional contract to the player is a market deal.

You can argue that the tender market is, by its nature, inherently too expensive (just as you can argue that the standard FA market is inherently too expensive), but that's a different argument.

If you are defining 'market' as RFA market, I would assume you mean the contract would be less than he would get as a UFA.

Tagged players


The same player, playing at the same level, will be looking at different market values in each of those sub-markets, so the parameters of an overpay aren't fixed.
