2017 NFL Combine Thread

Yeah, I really liked Willis, but I have concerns about his balance. Too many times I've seen him end up on the ground when he was in position to make the play. Still, I've maintained all along that he was a much better athlete than people expected. Great numbers!

I just got back from church, so I'm still going through all the testing from this morning that I've missed. Looks like I'm in for some fun!

Just watched two games:

Things I like:

  • Very good edge setter. Strong enough to stack the OT
  • Gets his hands up into the passing lane. Good awareness.
  • Explosive stunt move
Things I don't

  • Doesn't bend the edge consistently enough. Has some good ones but can be pushed past the QB at times.
Overall though, I'm very impressed and he sure looks like he's a plus run defender that plays disciplined and gets to the QB pretty well. As I've said, I see him on the left side but think he can play RDE too. 8-12 sack guy?

Compare and contrast

HT: 6'5/ 6'5
WT: 266/265
ARM: 35.5/35.65
Bench:22/18
40: 4.78/4.76
VJ: 35/36
BJ: 120/ 123
3cone: 7.08/ 7.03
Shuttle: 4.38/ 4.38

That's Chandler Jones and Daeshon Hall. So, he's probably gonna be on our board.

Now that's interesting. Daeshon Hall had a 7.03 3-cone.

Chandler Jones

6-5, 266, 35.5" arms

4.87 forty
22 reps
35" vert
10' BJ
7.07 3-cone
4.38 shuttle

Daeshon Hall

6-5, 266, 35.5" arms

4.76 forty
18 reps
36" vert
10'3" BJ
7.03 3-cone
4.38 shuttle

Very interesting indeed.

Hall and Jordan Willis anyone?

You typed that just as I was doing mine. Incredibly similar - Chandler Jones and Hall I mean, not you and me

Good for Baker and Lewis

Funny you bring that up, because I was just looking at Deatrich Wise and his numbers. They're pretty close, too.

6'5" HEIGHT
35 5/8" ARM LENGTH
274LBS. WEIGHT
10 1/2" HANDS

4.92
22 REPS
33.0 INCH
125.0 INCH
7.07 SEC
4.36 SEC

Only his 40 and vertical are (marginally) below Jones. Otherwise, he's pretty much dead even or better across the board. Still expect him to get some looks late, although Hall is a much more dynamic athlete.

Derek Rivers another clear winner. Nice numbers all around:

  • 6'4"HEIGHT
  • 32 3/4"ARM LENGTH
  • 248LBS.WEIGHT
  • 9 3/8"HANDS
  • 4.61 SEC
  • 30 REPS
  • 35.0 INCH
  • 123.0 INCH
  • 6.94 SEC
  • 4.40 SEC
Will probably be more of a 34 OLB at that weight, but his tape shows a sudden, explosive player who can get into the backfield with consistency. Interesting guy.

One thing to note, Chandler Jones had a 1.64 10 yard split to Wise's 1,70. Still, nice spot. That's a very impressive 3-cone for Wise.

Just to keep everything in perspective, here are Flowers' test numbers and eval from a couple years ago. Sometimes, teams just have a plan for a player that works better than what the evaluation projects.

  • 6'2"HEIGHT
  • 34 1/4"ARM LENGTH
  • 266LBS.WEIGHT
  • 10"HANDS

  • 4.93 SEC
  • 28 REPS
  • 36.5 INCH

  • 121.0 INCH

  • 7.34 SEC
  • 4.40 SEC

ANALYSIS
STRENGTHS
High-motor power end. Uses stab move effectively and is continuing to grow as a pass rusher. Consistent with hand placement and is technically sound. Stacks and sheds in run game. Had a strong game against Texas A&M tackle Cedric Ogbuehi. Good student. Doesn't look like much athletically, but finds his way to the ball against the run.
WEAKNESSES
Not a quick-twitch athlete. Below-average burst off the snap and and won't win around the corner very much in pass rush. Not yet advanced enough as a pass rusher to be able to consistently pressure the passer. Nothing special about ability to close on the ball. Limited scheme fit.
NFL COMPARISON
Adrian Clayborn
BOTTOM LINE
While he might have room on his frame to add more bulk, he's not as long as most 3-4 teams would like at defensive end. His aggressiveness at the point of attack is a plus, but he might have to come off the field on third downs. Limited athletic traits might affect his draft stock.

I don't know if anyone remembers that Packer fan on some forum that had a formula for twitch and explosive power and then dividing into risk groups. Anyway, a few years ago I wrote a script that does the calculations. I don't know if anyone cares, but this is how it breaks down this year (with the prospects that participated in all the drills required).

Also, fun fact: Vincent Valentine was in Low Risk 2 in last year's draft.

EDIT: Added Myles Garrett.

I have been a huge fan of hall. Every time I watched tape of Texas a&m he popped,

I also really like Harris, although he is small for what we do defensively.

I am also a huge fan of Anderson, he fits perfectly in our defense as a hybrid de/olb,

Two guys that have me drooling.

Willis, who has completely taken me by surprise.

McMillan. I could not tell by looking at tape that he had 4.6 speed. But since he does, he would be perfect at mlb in our defense.

Fantastic job. Interesting to see DJ Jones at the top. He really popped for me today. Looked athletic for someone of his size. Interesting to see Willis so low considering the day he had today. Are you able to determine what dropped him in these rankings?

For the explosive power stat, he would have been better off being shorter, heavier, or jumping higher or longer. You can make him get inte Low Risk 2 by tweaking his numbers slightly. By just changing one of these stats separately he gets in:

If he was 3 inches shorter, he weighed in at 264 lbs., he had jumped a 11'2" broad, or a 42" vertical. Any one of those gets him into Low Risk 2, so his numbers are just slightly too low.

As far as the twitch stat goes, it penalizes fast 10 yard splits, and high short shuttles. So if he had say a 1.59 split instead, or a 4.23 short shuttle, his twitch would have been 1.09 and he with his 3 cone time he would have placed in Low Risk 1 instead.

EDIT: Also, he isn't in the sheet, but Myles Garrett is firmly in Low Risk 2 (1.05 or higher explosive power score) with a score of 1.1141.

Doesn't have Clowney's length or size but...

A slower 10 yard split helping his twitch stat doesn't seem to make sense to me. But thanks for the explanation.
