Pats not trading Garoppolo - Schefter

No one knows what New England's asking price for Jimmy G. is, except for Coach and maybe a handful of others. No one. All the reporters can say this or that, but until someone in authority in the NE front office comments on it, it is all speculation.

But let me say this: We had a competent QB backing up Brady (Matt Cassel) when Brady was lost for the season. The team went 11-5 and only missed the playoffs because Favre, playing for the Jets, resorted to form and lost against Miami. But I digress.

Let me just ask this: Who here would be comfortable with Jacoby under center if Brady is lost for the season? THAT is the real question. One of insurance to the team. If Jacoby isn't ready yet to step in, then why trade Jimmy G.? Having a couple of high-end players through extra draft picks is nice, and all that, but not if the team has a losing season. That's not how this works. That's not how any of this works.

I can't believe there are actually people deluded enough here to think Jimmy is gonna sign a new contract to spend another 5 years as a backup, the 8 year backup

He's never signing a new deal while Brady is here, he's leaving in 12 months for a 2nd rounder or a comp pick.

Bill if this is not a smokescreen to up the ante is telling you he thinks Brady is closer to being done than Brady thinks he is, no reason to keep Garoppolo if you believe Brady can play 4-5 more years like everyone seems to believe.

I don't care if he thinks he's a franchise QB, in 12 months either Jimmy or Brady have to be gone.

4-5 years is a long time. Brady is 40 years old. I say the Pats keep JG as insurance this season. Unless someone is offering a huge amount of draft capital for JG.

They aren't going to give him away. Especially considering the circumstances.

Its not how the world works. I will say Brady might be the exception but.. when JG's contract is up Brady will enter the season as a 41 year old QB and JG will be 26. IF and thats a big IF Bill thinks JG is a franchise QB.. its not that obvious..

I just watched the Adam schefter report on YouTube. He could not have been more unequivocal in his report. He's not going to put his reputation on the line to help the Pats posture for better offer.

Back when Parcells left for New York, Bob Kraft did an interview where he talked about how difficult it was to plan when you had a Head Coach who was coaching year to year as Parcells was. When Kraft announced that he knew when Belichick would retire, I remembered that interview. You could see where Kraft would feel the same about a QB who's Year to year as well.

I think we should all prepare ourselves that at some point Brady's and the Patriot's path will diverge and both must go their own way for awhile. I'm not going to be mad at either when that point comes. Both sides have earned the right to choose their path. Tom Brady has been very good to the New England Patriots and the Patriots have been very good to Tom Brady. They will always be linked in the hearts of New England football fans and the history of the NFL whether or not Brady plays in another city for a couple of years.

Interesting thought....If we had taken Jimmy G in round one (instead of Dominque Easley), they have the fifth year option on him and we kick this can down the road another season.

Not when it comes to a QB. They will have the goat turn 40 in august. All it take's one big hit. I think they feel jimmy can be the QB for the next 10 to 12 years and they will just give him up for one first rounder. I don't think so.

How ironic. Brady gets pummeled against Denver in previous year's AFCCG and in this SB. He's fine.
Garappolo the QB for the next 10-12 years doesn't last 2 games.

Does anybody take more sides of a story than Schefter? Just asking. I could post the asking price, the likelihood of a trade, all posted by Schefter, but why bother?

To be fair I listened to what Adam said previous to today and he said it was his opinion that the Pats would get atleast a 1st round pick for him. It wasn't anything official just his opinion.

Today he told us what he heard. There is a difference.

As Schefter noted weeks ago, the "first and a fourth" was his opinion, not a sourced statement.

If any team offers a 1st and anything else for JG the Patswill trade him. I dont care what Schefter thinks he knows about the Patriots, as others have mentioned this the best time to trade. Wait until next year and franchise him for say 22 Million, then you got 40 Million into two QB's and no leverage to trade him? doesn't make sense.

With more than 1 possible buyer theres always leverage to make a deal to trade a player especially franchise QBs

It doesn't make sense if you know that Brady is going to the QB in 2018. But what if Bill has questions about Brady's age and is cautious about trading away a potential star QB.

Heres the issue, if the Patriots think his value is worth a 1st round pick or 2 1st round picks.. then they think he is a young starting QB with lots of potential. So if they think that then they probably are considering.. do we really want to trade him?

I just didn't like JG pocket presence, he just doesn't look comfortable from the games I've seen him in, on the other hand Brissett looked Much more comfortable in the pocket, sure he didn't play the following game well, but again he was a rookie and didn't have as much time as JG.

I'd take a Matt Cassel as a backup on a vet min contract since he worked with McDaniels before and knows the system.

I guess we didn't watch the same games. That Pocket Presence was great against the Bills. I think he threw for 80 yrds and we scored 0 points.

I don't feel comfortable with Brisset as our back up. At least not yet.

The Pats need to make sure they get a lot for Garoppolo, but they need to trade him eventially. Brady deserves to be able to decline with a better team around him (if or when that happens), and picks for Garoppolo helps make that happen. He's earned that.

Same as his opinion that some team would "pry" garoppolo away, or, indeed that his opinion was the Pats wouldn't trade him.

Ridiculous post, you don't know what you were looking at. Or maybe you're a Jets fan?

Garoppolo's pocket presence last year was masterful -- he saw the entire field and worked through his progressions like clockwork; his fast release and accuracy were special. Brissett essentially was limited to one read on passing plays.

Where the fK would the comment "jets fan" even fit in this discussion dumbo?
He did not look comfortable in the pocket, even the commentators pointed that out. His pocket presence is not good, it could be because he doesn't have many starts.

I want the pats to get the best value out of JG and trading him would be the best choice for this franchise so we can invest in other key areas such as pass rush, maybe a replacement for Hightower and maybe adding depth to our O-line.
