The JimmyG pick(s)

I think he'll be traded before the draft provided BB gets the return he wants. But it wouldn't shock me if we end up with a 2017 2nd rounder and a 2018 first. We might get the Browns' first rounder but I really don't think we'll get one of the top three picks. I also think the 2nd this year, 2018 first scenario would suit BB just fine.

To my mind, this is the perfect storm for the Patriots.

1. A genuine belief exists that Belichick will need to have Jimmy G ripped from his grasp - he isn't a motivated seller in this case.

2. Despite the usual over positive hype that accompanies any QB class the nearer we get to the draft the more realistic case is that this is a very weak draft class for QB's that might be pro-ready this year.

3. Jimmy G really does look like the real deal. Heaven forbid that Brady does decide to retire (v. unlikely) in the next season or 2 - I would be more happy with Jimmy G that any other upcoming prospect and pretty much any other NFL QB taking the franchise forward.

4. A visible market has already surfaced - despite the usual biased media douchebags trying to downplay the Jimmy G market we have struggling teams with relatively new leadership in place (Browns/49ers/Bears) looking for 'their guy'. These guys all own premium picks.

5. Draft picks, in general, are way over-rated (probably because they offer some indistinct hope to hopeless franchises) - especially in the incompetent hands of the perennial struggler.

6. No real competition on the QB market - Romo is not a viable competitor (I honestly think there will be little market for this guy - even as a free agent). Look at guys like Mike Glennon and the mystifying hype that they are generating - this will tell you that 2017 is a dry-well where QBs are concerned.

7. The teams that can get Jimmy G aren't direct competitors this year - or at last very unlikely. 2 of them are NFC and the other would be grateful to hit 6 wins this year. They aren't likely to be conflicted by making the Patriots better - at least not as much as a Denver, Pittsburgh or a divison rival.

If the Patriots don't take home the motherload for Jimmy G - I can't see how its possible for anyone to in this type of scenario.

You don't always get the full story when you follow the local media, but without question, teams will try and warm fans up to the idea of a certain player.

Reading the tea leaves from the many different media markets that need a QB, Chicago seems to be the most open to a JimmyG trade. Part of that is a long history of losing with the same guy, and part still a rich football tradition. The local connection helps. The coach on the hot seat helps. The looming return of Smokin Jay looms.

Cleveland fans are freaking out about losing a draft pick, which tells me everything I need to know about Cleveland. San Fran is a little more aware of what an uphill battle this is, and that a QB might help, but probably not enough to justify the cost. Zona still wants to win, and soon, and New Orleans is still the house that Brees built. Buffalo and the Jets know better than even entertain the idea.

I think we end up leveraging San Fran and the amount of picks Cleveland has to really put the screws to Chicago. There just seems to be a belief and understanding that JimmyG might actually be the answer, and they are desperate for an answer.

We don't talk about this enough, but owners care about fans perception, and having a big trade go against public opinion has killed many deals. Chicago fans and media liking a certain guy enough might allow football guys to do their job without interruption.

I think it ends up being the 3rd and we return some mid picks to ease the pain. Then, move down to 10 and allow Buffalo to go all in on Watson.

Dare to dream?

Regardless, the idea had me thinking. So I posed question to the "insider": Would you trade the first pick in the draft for Patriots quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo?

The answer was immediate: "If I'm the Browns, yes. I'd want Garoppolo and another pick though, maybe a third- or fourth-rounder."

After picking myself up from the floor, I continued the conversation and asked the insightful question: "So you'd trade the first pick in the draft for Garoppolo and a third-round pick?"

"Absolutely."

Which made me surmise that Garoppolo really must be good.

Trading No. 1 pick for Jimmy Garoppolo might not be crazy idea

Personally in this draft I think I'd rather have 12 and 34 or 53.

I imagine we trade down the Pick Straight away. We go get Malik Hooker, who i think is the best Safety/Player in the whole draft. We then hopefully get a lucky pick and manage to get ourselves a new DE to partner with Flowers. For me this draft, is our defence for the next 5 years. I wouldn't even mind trading the first pick, for a first this year and another first next year.

Trouble is, it's always easy to assume there's a trade to be made but there needs to be a trade partner. Would a bunch of QB needy teams want to give up two firsts for Garrett? You're probably relying on the Jags, Titans and Chargers wanting to trade up.

Valid point.. I'm just really not sold on him... for some reason

I've only just started my draft work so have only looked at a few prospects but if we end up with a top 5 pick, then give me Jamaal Adams somewhere in the top 10. Special player who can do anything.

I also like Jonathan Allen and Reuben Foster in the 5-10 area. You are gonna get a real good player with Allen, but as others have said I'm not sure he's an all pro.

Mid first round I like Corey Davis, Teez Tabor

Back end of the 1st I like Hasson Reddick. Reddick could be that cover LB that BB has been trying to find.

It's very early days, but two of the prospects we met at the Shrine Game/senior Bowl were Carroll Phillips and Jimmie Gilbert, both undersized EDGE prospects in the 220lb - 235lb range much like Reddick.

Was listening to the latest Kiper/McShay ESPN podcast and Kiper started talking a bidding war for JG. He didn't talk specifics but the inference was that the haul for Jimmy could be really big (like more than just no 12 big) To be fair, I think he was speculating rather than repeating anything he'd heard, but I'm okay with that being a narrative going forward.

This has been playing on my mind last few days what we could get.. we give them jimmy G, I am debating whether we trade our 32nd but for this one I'm not.

So from just jimmy G you we should aim for; their first round, and there second round picks and their 3rd next year if he plays well if not we take their 4th

So we could potentially this year have.

Cleveland 12th
Both of their second rounders
And a third

That would be rather nice. I want those second round picks.

That is what I'm starting to think now.. there's only two players who I'd take at 12 and that's foster and hooker. They are NFL ready. This draft has more depth than I seen in years. Bundle the picks and we have a great great defence for the next 5 years.. there is also some late round Offensive talent as well I think. I'd rather have a 1st next season now looking at the boards and playing things out

2nd round certainly looks like a goldmine at the moment. Makes you forget about the first..

The haul of
ED/DL Harris/Basham/DeM Walker/Lawson etc. -
LB Reddick/Cunningham/Anderson/McMillan etc. -
CB/S D King/B Baker/M Williams/E Jackson etc.

while adding in the 3rd round whoever falls from
DL Jaleel Johnson/Tomlinson/Adams/Vanderdoes/Ogunjobi

yes, you'd be pretty much set

Give me the 12th and both of browns seconds and I think BB will be a happy man. In all honesty wouldn't surprise me if he would trade that 12th for a first and more draft capital. This class is stacked
