Dion Lewis vs James White

Must be the one he just made up

I saw a tweet from Jeff Howe I believe that mentioned Amendola as a name to watch in regards to retirement

I found it. Apologies accepted!!

With that in mind, I think White's number was called because of the recent fumbles that Lewis experienced in the divisional round. If Lewis doesn't fumble in the Houston game, I think it is Lewis that gets the bulk of the work in the Super Bowl comeback. What do you think?

Am I overthinking it? Is James White clearly that much better of a receiver and pass rusher?

Lewis is the better player because more shifty and would have been on the field substantially more if he didn't pull his hamstring already early in the game. It has been reported multiple times that the TD to win the game in OT was originally drawn up with Lewis in mind.

Regarding the impending Amendola retirement, I found seven references to it on the internet (below), so it must be true. Jeff Howe breaks another big one!

Damn! He and Brady were on the same page and he sure shows up in big games. Well, easy come, easy go I guess.

I guess Mitchell is ready to fill in. What will we do with the cap space?

What will be interesting is what they decide to do w/ DJ Foster.

If the rumors are true w/ Amendola retirement could we see DJ Foster become a slot replacement?

What Amendola retirement rumors?

Link?

I just googled it and nothing came up.

What rumors?

Must be the one he just made up

Do you have a link to the Amendola speculation?

This isn't about White VS. Lewis. This is about White plus Lewis. We have one position on the team that's well stocked, let's just enjoy it. The coaches will deploy them in the right situations against the right teams, and be able to keep them both rested. And with Lewis being a bit injury prone, that's a great thing.

White made some cuts on the SB that looked like he'd been paying attention when Lewis runs. Good for him.

Lewis is shifter and can be the best runner of all our backs when healthy (early 2015).

White has grown a lot as a player. What he lacks as a runner is made up for with his skills as a receiver and pass protector. He is durable and has the best ball security of the three guys.

Lewis still needs to get some of his mojo and explosiveness back and stay healthy. If I had to bet on which player is more likely to be here for the long term it'd be White.

I see it the other way around. White will be gone next FA the same way that Woodhead and Vereen moved on. There is no value in paying flexbacks more than midround rookie salary. If the White situation has shown anything it's that Ivan Fears can make anyone a good flexback in this offense.

Lets see where Lewis is a whole year after his ACL injury with a full offseason in him.

Stats can be deceiving, but if I'm the Pats, it's hard to put Lewis above White. IIRC, Belichick intimated that in an interview earlier in the season.

For the two years Lewis has been with the Pats (2015 & 2016), regular season and playoffs, the two compare as follows:

Lewis: Regular Seasons Totals: 2 Rushing TDs, 2 Passing TDs, 0 Return TDs, 14 games played, 3 fumbles lost.

White: Regular Seasons Totals: 2 Rushing TDs, 9 Passing TDs, 0 Return TDs, 30 games played, 0 fumbles lost.

Lewis: Playoffs Totals: 1 Rushing TDs, 1 Passing TDs, 1 Return TDs, 3 games played, 1 fumbles lost.

White: Playoffs Totals: 2 Rushing TDs, 2 Passing TDs, 0 Return TDs, 5 games played, 0 fumbles lost.

In summary, White is more durable, more productive in scoring, and has much better ball security, in BOTH the regular season and playoffs.

On the other hand, when Lewis is healthy, he can be electric, but if I'm honest about it, I am way more nervous when Lewis has the ball.

Yes, it's certainly great to have both backs. This thread was not meant to be a 'which one do we keep' feel. I just found it interesting that White got the bulk of the work when Lewis had been regarded as the better player (and got far more snaps in the prior playoff games).

As someone mentioned, the injury to Lewis (whcih I had not known about) must have been the big factor.

I haven't heard that rumor but I doubt it, I think if they wanted him to be a slot receiver he would have at least been working with the WRers during the year a bit

Sort of on topic, but I wonder if White was at the bottom of the list of guys to worry about in the Falcon's defensive plans. After you double JE11, cover Bennet, keep on eye on Dola, worry about Mitchell, rush the passer, etc., you run out of defenders.

/armchair internet speculation.

Lewis wasn't nearly as explosive this year it seemed to me. Hopefully a full off season will help him regain some of that.
I think it will. That's typical with ACL recoveries in their first year back. Hopefully he returns to his 2015 self because, when healthy, he brings a dynamic and a gear to the open field that White simply doesn't have.

2015 Dion was one of the most explosive players to ever put on a Patriots uniform. He was on pace for 85+ receptions and 900+ yards before getting injured in the Redskins game. On top of that he had 4.8 ypc behind a weak OL.

White has developed into a very good player. If Lewis can't regain his prior form White will get most of the work. If he does White will still be used to keep him fresh.

Both of them healthy give the Pats a pass catching duo that's on par with what Atlanta has... maybe even better given what Lewis brings to the table when healthy.

They do different things. Lewis far more explosive out of the backfield. White a better route runner, and can do double movements to lose defenders better.

This means that we have options for differing game plans...i like that

Lewis provides more visual effect

I'll take White.....I said this last year also

White is ahead of where Vereen was 3 years in

Regardless, the Pats will be drafting a 3rd down back this year

don't be surprised to see Lewis be a cap hit......he has proven to be unreliable

Not so sure about your last 2 points. If they like Foster, I doubt they'll draft another third down back. Practically all we have is third down backs. As far as Lewis being a cap cut, I don't see it because he's very cheap and we have a ton of space. I could see him simply not making the 53 though.

As we don;t get College football here, what is this Christian McCaffrey like? Keep seeing him linked

Dion Lewis when used as workhorse RB will get worn down and injured eventually. Dion when used as change of pace RB and sparingly will last the entire playoffs. My point Dion Lewis is a change of pace RB who should be used only sparingly. That said the Patriots are more than set at the 3rd RB Position in 2017 even if the injury bug hits that position.
