Yup, 2 weeks to discuss a single game so time for micro-dissecting...

After two AFCCG's in a row of electing to receive, it's no longer a guarantee Bill will defer.

1) Do you think Bill would defer against the Falcons?
2) What do you want him to do and why?
3) What do you think his reasoning was for doing so against the Steelers?

1) No
2) Take the ball. Falcons rely on getting early leads.
3) The same. Letting the other team get ahead makes it easier for their defense.

Hope he defers, I hate recieveing to start the game.

Yep, if he feels their D can be had reliably on the opening drive, we're taking the ball.

A start of 7-0 could turn into 14-0 or 14-3, and then...well...get ready 345 Park Ave

I've never liked taking the ball first.

1. Pressure is immediately on you to basically score 7 or you regret your decision.

2. Eliminates the double up chance (having two offensive possessions in a row before/after half) + creates opportunity for Atlanta to have that. Don't need an offense like them having an extra possession.

Again though, I certainly see the logic behind wanting to jump to a quick lead, it's just putting a lot of pressure on that first drive.

i want him to defer. i think he took the ball last night because he was incredibly confident that we would go down and score. from a game planning standpoint, he knew we had them.

i would guess he defers...? it's not like pitt was the first time we've ever played a team with a better offense than defense. unless he thinks first drive against atl is easy money, he should probably defer

Take the ball and score. Prevent them from taking an early lead and put the pressure on Matt Ryan. The worse we can make it for him and his team in the beginning, the more likely he is to turn into SB48 Peyton Manning.

I hope he defers. Last night the steelers had a great shot at making it a 17-13 game and getting 2 straight possessions if theyd have executed slightly better right before halftime. Gotta go for that extra possession.

Yes..... score at every opportunity, and if you can make extended-drives that keep Matt Ryan and Julio Jones sitting on the sideline

here is atlantas defensive rankings

Pts/game - 25.4 (27th)
yds/game - 371.2 (25th)
Rush/game - 104.5 (17th)
pass yards/game - 266.7 (28th)

I dont see them slowing down tom brady.

Atlanta wants to play fast and get in front early. If we do that instead it puts alot of pressure on Ryan to score and maybe he turns back into prior playoffs matt ryan

I think he'll defer. Actually give up the opening TD, okay that happens. Stop them on the first series (and you've given them the "first shot") and it takes some of the piss out of the super unbeatable Atlanta offensive machine.

Better question: do they uncharacteristically go after Matty Ice a few times or rely on 4 for pressure?

I think he has prioritized getting ahead over the hope of two scores bracketing halftime. He will take the ball.

Bill could always throw everyone a curve ball, but with ATL being an offense first team, the same philosophy against PIT will probably mean we receive should we win the coin toss.

Going back to yesterday, NE taking the ball was BB's response to "assholes". He was saying "we own your defense so bad, I'm going to do what I never do".

I don't think those overall season numbers are helpful. They don't take into account how a defense can improve, especially one that is as young as Atlanta's. The median age of the Falcons' 11 most-used defenders is 24, and seven of those guys?—?Beasley, Jones, Neal, tackle Grady Jarrett, linebacker De’Vondre Campbell, and cornerbacks Brian Poole and Jalen Collins?—?are in their first or second seasons in the NFL.

Their head coach, Dan Quinn, is only in his second year in Atlanta, and has had to help rebuild their defense on the fly, implementing new schemes and making personnel adjustment. You also have to consider how they lost their star cornerback (Desmond Trufant ) to a season-ending injury in Week 9. So this is basically a defense that has had to be rebuilt and find its identity over the course of the season.

To get a better sense of their potential or the threat they can pose in the Super Bowl, you would have to look at how they've improved after the Week 11 bye.

Falcons Defense (Before Bye)
385.9 yards allowed per game
28.3 points allowed per game
1.57 turnovers per game

Falcons Defense (After Bye)
346.67 allowed per game
20.4 points allowed per game
1.83 turnovers per game

The post-bye 1.83 turnover rate would place them in the top-5 for the season had they maintained that pace all year, their points allowed per game would have them inside the top-12, and their yards allowed would have them in the top-16.

This post-bye trajectory has also continued into the postseason. Since the Nov. 20 bye week, they have won seven of their last eight games, and allowed 21 or fewer points six of those eight outings. In that stretch of eight games, Atlanta has also forced 15 turnovers?—?four more than it managed over the first 10 weeks of the regular season.

Collins and Poole have helped keep the secondary afloat after Trufant suffered a season-ending shoulder injury in Week 9. Their progression is such that their secondary got even better. From Week 1 to Week 9, the Falcons were 23rd in pass defense DVOA; but from that point on, they were 11th (ending at 19th on the season) and their defensive passer rating had fallen from nearly 101 to under 78. Meanwhile, linebackers Jones and Campbell are playing faster and smarter in all phases, which has stabilized many of the personnel packages Quinn spent the first half of the season tinkering with.

Overall, the Falcons defense has been a solid complement to their offense. They are not an elite defense by any means (ranking dead last in run-defense DVOA over the second half of the season)? but they are playing good complementary football, particularly when playing with a significant lead.

This was evident last night in the NFC Championship Game. While their offense got off to a quick start, Atlanta's young defense succeeded in pressuring Aaron Rodgers with six quarterback hits, two sacks; they also generated two turnovers, including an interception. Indeed, for the first 35 minutes of the game, the Falcons had kept Green Bay entirely out of the endzone. By the time the Packers finally got on the scoreboard, Atlanta had already amassed a 31-0 lead.

The point is, when other teams are forced to pass the ball to keep up with their offense, the Falcons have been able to aggressively get after the quarterback and generate turnovers.

nothing leads me to believe Atlantas defense has the ability to stop tom brady and the patriots. even just from an eye test. this is not the Giants of 07/2011 or the seahawks from 2014. or the texans/steelers this offseason. they dont have much of a pass rush and give brady time he will torch them.

I watched that packers game, and the first two drives rodgers drove down the field. the results were a missed field goal and a fumbled ball at the 2 yard line. those two plays changed the game from being 10-10 to 10-0 with pressure on green bay to keep up. why I believe pats need to strike early. same can be done if we stop falcons on their first drive and then go down and score.

this game will be won by whose defense can make more stops. and I have more faith in BB and the #1 ranked scoring defense to make enough stops on matt ryan. than that atlanta defense on tom brady.
